Dead Man's Switch - Chaining the Terror?

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

So I'll admit that I only briefly look at unreleased expansions in great detail. I typically just browse and see what's there, focussing mainly on the ship itself, and less on the upgrade cards. Since Wave 6 is getting closer and closer I actually played around with list building and was thinking about a Scum z-95 Swarm with tons of Dead Man's Switches.

First, these only come with the IG-2000, but each pack has 2. This means if you want to do a 5 or 6 swarm you'll need at least 3 IG-2000's - which is reasonable because if you want to play Epic Scum, you could easily find yourself someday owning 4 IG-2000s, and that would give you the ability to run 7 Scum z-95's each with a Dead Man's Switch.

Now I'm not suggesting that a Suicide Z-95 Swarm is effective - but I am going to declare that I think the idea would be mountains of fun! Imagine 7 ships all damaged, and one goes off, causing another to detonate, which then stacks 2 damage on all the rest... triggering another, which is enough to light the rest up! 7 damage total on all ships! It is theoretically possible that you could win this way. Like maybe if you are against a decimator, just fly one of your ships away and have the rest pounce him!

Would you ever consider chaining these things?

Perhaps not to that degree but if two ships have Dead man's switch and are close to death anyway it just might be worth it.

Our playgroup was actually joking about this the other night.

In a 7 Z-Swarm, you run 5 Z's with Dead Man's Switch and a ship with an assault missile, crash your DMS Z's into another formation/big ship, fire the assault missile at the target, detonating all of your Z's and then you win because you'll have 2 Z's left over with 29 points left alive for margin of victory.

I think Feedback Array might be better for the job you're trying to do. Notice on the wording that the ship doesnt even have to be in arc, so you could block with your lowly Z's and the feedback array for the win.

And then, at the end of all the explosions, you have no ships and lose.

I fully plan on running a DMS z over rocks to a target and hot to pop a hit to blow up on him. I just wish they would have had if you had ordinance that was unspent that added a hit or something.

I wish Carnor Jax could run dead man's switch. Get into range 1 and screw with them, and if they kill you, you splash damage all over them.

It also allows you to do up to 4 autowounds per ship (with Zs), and you get to choose who you hit! Yeah you get hit too and get an ion, but if you can one-shot some expensive ships you really won't care.

It was discussed extensively when DMS was first previewed.

Imagine 7 ships all damaged,

Yeah, sure, if you can set that up. But what opponent is going to see that you have a bunch of DMS Z's and then conveniently not focus fire but rather spread his attacks around so that all of your ships get a point or two of damage on them already, then cluster his entire fleet together while simultaneously letting you get all of your kamikaze Z-95's within range 1?

Sure, if you play lots of games with the list you might get lucky eventually and it would be spectacularly cool to watch the whole map go up in a quasi-orgasmic self destructive fireball, but the other 19 games your going to get annihilated.

Letting is a funny word here. You can't really control 7 enemy ships or run from them all.
