X-Wing will always be first in my heart but...

By Hrathen, in X-Wing

We have now dipped pretty deep into the EU. And I was getting worried that we might be coming close to exhausting what we can do with this flight path system.

Are you serious? We've just about covered the most basic possibilities, both in terms of EU content and mechanics.

EU-wise we're just about up to the post-Endor period, we still have the next 40 years to go, and that's assuming FFG never stray into prequel or Old Republic territory. We have dozens of different races and factions that haven't seen content for yet. Chiss. Hapans. Yuuzhan Vong (shutupshutupshutup). Yevetha. Ssi-Ruuk. And that's just the generic "big bads", not any of the custom unique ships. We've still got literally dozens of pilots available for the Rebels/New Republic alone in Rogue/Wraith squadrons and New Jedi Order, and you can make up as many Imperial ones as you need.

Regarding game mechanics there is still a lot of unexplored territory, from list writing to dial options to upgrade cards. How about allowing certain factions to play with each other? Having two dials for one ship representing different flight modes or power usages? A new type of token? The list goes on. I just came up with those in 30 seconds, I'm sure people who work on it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week have better ideas.

We've barely started walking down the path, I think it's a bit premature to worry about where it's going to end. :)

As a 30+ year D&D gamer DDAW was tempting, but I've held back thus far because there are far more X-Wing players, plus I've already got tons of minis (painted pewter and pre-painted plastic) for my D&D games. Still, D&D combat ...

On the other hand ... Wizkids rep runs against them. And as I look at the planned release schedule, it's like they're actively spamming their customers -- a wave a month with 3-4 releases per wave doesn't strike me as a way to build the game for the long term.

Oh another thing me and my mates saw was the size of the enterprise in AW and suddenly all the complaints made perfect sense to me.

The game is probably really fun but I just can't justify spending money on such crappy quality models.

If x-wing stuff wasn't as good a quality as it is I'd not of gotten so heavily into it either, for £10 a set you really should get better than what AW gives you.

I like x-wing for the theme, but I feel like D&D attack wing is the better game. It's just more fun.

Playing x-wing now feels very much like a dice game. Once the maneuvers are set, there's very few tactical decisions to be made. Attack wing adds several other layers of decisions: which spells to cast, and when to use them, and when to enable them or let them expire; whether to fly, swoop, or land; and what formation to put your troops in. I also far prefer the armor system to the shields of x-wing.

I'm not concerned about stuff becoming overpowered, because there are no factions. I buy one of everything and my opponent and I draft from that common pool. If something is overpowered, we'll buy a second one -- problem solved. I can see how this might be a problem for tournament games, and if that's what you're mostly interested in then D&D attack wing might not be the game for you. Otherwise, check it out, it's really fun!

My son (9) and I play both X-wing and D&D AW. While I agree with the comments about X-wing having better balance and being a " tighter" game; D&D's scenario based OPs are allot of fun. They introduce more than just 100 point death matches which is a nice change. Death matches get old really fast in my opinion. And although My son and I have been fortunate enough to get both of the prize dragons so far...I hate the prizes, exclusive prize minis is really an unfortunate situation...

I should explain why I hate the prizes...hate is a strong word; they are nice to have, but you feel like a ****** bringing them when only a few people have them...

I've seen people play this game at my FLGS and I have to say that I would feel embarrassed to either play or be associated with creating that game. The cards, tokens, and dials looked like Print-and-play. The miniatures looked like repurposed D&D minis. I can see why FFG licensed it to WizKids; they knew the product would be terrible and it wouldn't impact X-Wing sales.

Have fun playing Heroclix 2.0.

So this finally came out, huh? Any clue as to how available they are at the moment?

Well in the store i went to the shelves were full.

For all the people saying those models look terrible, they're soooo much better than all of the Star Trek stuff. Even the weird looking little dudes are painted so much better than some of the ships I got. There's paint splashed all over my Enterprise A, straight lines are painted at weird angles, pieces aren't even fully glued in, and there's a bunch of extra plastic gunk, as if the secondary hull has a tumor. Wizkids said they were happy with the quality of the models.

So what does this whole article have to do with X-wing. (Well if you read this far down you probably don't care) I was getting a little worried for X-wing as a game. We have now dipped pretty deep into the EU. And I was getting worried that we might be coming close to exhausting what we can do with this flight path system. D&D Attack wing shows that we have only scratched the surface.

For the record I love X-Wing. I got into it for the models and stayed because of the simplicity of the rule set. It allowed for strategy in planning, tactics in moves yet was simple enough that non gamers (wife, kids and gradkids) could play.

Yet when this came out:

I wondered if it is getting too complex? It is for the non-gamer family members.

I love X-Wing but it's loosing the interest of the more casual players and family members. I know we can always not use part of the game and that's kind of sad too.

As a 15-year D&D gamer, I'm now instantly suspicious of anything Wizards of the Coast does with the IP...

...and in this case, what they did was license the IP to Wizkids, who were absolutely guaranteed to do this with it.

I'll give you three guesses as to why that is.
