Why different "core rules"?

By JediGM, in Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RPG

The thing about different time periods is that they don't really need much in the way of crunch. Blasters are blasters, armor is armor, and the Force is the Force. Take your Stormtroopers, call them Clonetroopers and you are good to go.

For me, the major things are ships. It's simple enough to reflavor, but I want to be more precise with my ships.

I want there to be differences in both blasts and vehicles. Yeah they may operate on the same basic principles but they will not be identical. I hate the idea of generic blasters rather then specific models.

Here ya go...

But here you're really getting into completely different territory. The core game has a "generic" blaster because it's simple. Call it whatever you want, create a new manufacturer and model even, modify it to your tastes...but the numbers (e.g. damage 6, crit 3) is really all you need to know mechanically. And since the game seems to be founded on the KISS principle (Keep It Simple, Stupid), that was really the way forward.

For those that desire specific models of handheld blasters, there are several supplements that have them :)

Yeah, beyond the exceptional and exotic models a blaster will be a blaster and one make/manufacturer's light blaster pistol will have the same range, damage and crit rating as another. Not a lot of point in trying to represent minute differences in performance when the rules aren't granular enough for it.

What would be more useful is a list of galactic manufacturers and their common items. I could see that resource being in the Technician sourcebook.

D20 modern did it, it was pointless. There was a big book o guns, where about 80% of the weapons were exactly like all the other weapons of a similar type except for some minor detail like ammo count, or a couple feet of range.

If a weapon doesn't have at least a special rule or two attached, or some other obvious difference, don't have it take up space in a supp that would better be spent on something, anything, even a cool piece of art.

For me, it sums up as this. If this had been done with any other game I would be crying "Rip-off!" and be very ill-disposed to the company. And my initial reaction to it in this case was pretty negative.

But this is the exception to the rule - FFG have done such an astonishingly very good job with these games, that I find myself okay with it. Enthusiastic even - they have actually tried to give value with these three different takes on SW and the core rules and impressed me heartily.

In a few years they'll have nothing left but adventures and region books to do. Adding some era books would be a great way to lengthen the lifespan of the system

Some of that depends on approval by the mighty mouse about what can be used. The amount of history in the Star Wars universe got truncated when Disney set what is canon.

They've been using Legends stuff since day one and in every single book for this system, I don't think Disney is going to stop them now. They might require/request them to make a sequel trilogy era supplement as a cash in but that isn't exactly a bad thing.

Well, they've been using superficial names and places from the Legends stuff. Nobody much cares if they use a few existing names for planets or make up a new one. But they've not done much more than that. Just because a name appears or a couple of organizations are still there, doesn't mean that it is in the Legends continuity.

The writers for FFG's SWRP system have absolutely been drawing from the whole breadth of all the content that's been created for Star Wars over the last 35+ years.

They've been using species, ships, organizations, planets, and detailed references to NPCs from books, comics, videogames and so on.

Hardly any of the real backstory of Star Wars is present in the movies, because its focus is on action and character. They mention a planet called Ord Mantell but it was left up to a novelist or comics writer to go into detail about what kind of planet Ord Mantell is. They show you a guy with tusks who gets his arms chopped off, but it's not like they went into detail about who the Aqualish are or where they come from and what their planet was like.

FFG isn't constrained by the so-called 'culling' of the Expanded Universe, they clearly have the option of drawing from everything that's been created over the years for Star Wars.

This is a good point on what direction FFG is taking when it comes the Library of already available information out there.

For all we know they (FFG) might have been given some direction on what parts of the EU might become cannon once again and in what way they will be used.

We have heard that one of the Focuses when it comes to the new Cannon is to Mine the EU, but not be limited by it. So we can take it that FFG is doing the same thing.
