First Post and First Squad

By Baaa, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Hi folks,

This is my first post on the boards, so hello to you all. I'm entering a store championship in the next couple of weeks and have been toying around with a few builds. Some of the builds are -

ABBA

BEE

EEAA

XXBB

Rather than throw a wall of text up, one of the lists I'm leaning towards is -

BAAA

Dagger Sqn Pilot - Advanced Sensors; Proton Torpedos (31 pts)

Green Sqn Pilot - A-Wing Test Pilot; Chardaan Refit; PTL; Marksmanship (23 pts)

Green Sqn Pilot - A-Wing Test Pilot; Chardaan Refit; PTL; Marksmanship (23 pts)

Green Sqn Pilot - A-Wing Test Pilot; Chardaan Refit; PTL; Marksmanship (23 pts)

Basic idea is that I have 3 very maneuverable A-Wings flying about causing a nuisance, whilst the B-Wing tries to pick off shields and hull points at range 3.

I'm not too sure if it's viable, or indeed good enough to take to a tournament, so any thoughts on how it will perform, criticisms of the build or suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers

Honestly, fly the ships and upgrades that you want to fly. Your confidence in its abilities and knowledge of its capabilities is far more important than choosing the latest uber-netlist. It'sll also provide more fun :)

That said, I'd think about the second elite pilot skill on the As. A-Wings are notoriously under-gunned, and taking Marksmanship doesn't actually help you do more damage, is simply makes the damage you do do more effective in certain circumstances. It also denies you the opportunity to use a focus for defence, something that can be vital with only four hit points in total.

Other valid options could include Outmanoeuvre or Predator. Outmanoeuvre helps you by boosting your offensive damage if you manage to get out of our opponent's arc - something PTL A-Wings are entirely capable of doing. Predator will allow you better use of the dice you have. Most importantly though, both of these cards don't require an action, giving you more protection (focus and/or evade) and better manoeuvrability (by arc-dodging).

Of course, Outmanoeuvre only comes in the TIE Defender and E-Wing packs, and Predator is even rare, coming only in the latter, so it's entirely understandable if you don't have access to these!

Looks fun. Just want to offer a bit of advice for flying it. First, as Hedgehogmech mentioned, Marksmanship doesn't actually increase your chance to hit. It will be excellent on range 1 shots where you get the extra attack die, but against most ships in most situations, you'd want to stick with Focus.

Marksmanship will really shine against Large ships with lots of hull. But especially against a turret DO NOT use Marksmanship at range 2, and then Push the Limit to boost into Range 1. You will have no tokens for defense and you will be facing a lot of dice. In this situation, you'd want to stay at range 2 and take Focus, even if you want to stack those crits because otherwise you could easily get blown to smithereens. Marksmanship will best be used when you are safely out of arc (which doesn't happen for turrets). You might even consider Marksmanship and the Push the Limit to Focus, even though it seems redundant, it could help your survival.

Test it! My worry would be in a sixty minute round I'd try and take out the B-wing and hope the a-wings with their wo attack dice can't cause enough damage. Saying that, I haven't tried it, and I bet it would be great fun to fly.

Thanks for the replies and advice, it's much appreciated.

I wasn't sure about Marksmanship myself to be honest, but I thought it was a decent candidate as I'm going to have to get the A-Wings in close for them to be any good, changing even one or two results out of nine to critical damage could (hopefully) help make a dent in something.

I'll hopefully be trying it out this weekend and if I get a chance, I'll try a couple of the other recommendations that folks have made.

I'll be sure to let you know how I get on.

Cheers

Best of luck!
