Convention Game Soundboarding!

By LibrariaNPC, in Game Masters

Convention season is starting up for me, and I'm considering running some EotE now that my "required" sessions are locked in.

Like anyone else running games at conventions, I'm always up for ideas as to what to run. Here's what I have lined up, just in case anyone else wants to offer input, offer up what they've run, or just want to give ideas for other GMs in a similar boat.

May the idea sharing commence!

==Star Wars: Rebels==

With the popularity of the show, I didn't think it would hurt to stat up the crew (not using typical player rules, but like NPCs) and put them on a zany (mis)adventure. I think this will get some attention.

==Star Wars: Episode 6.5==

In anticipation of the new movie, let the players offer some fan-theory of what sort of mischief the main characters have been up to (outside of Legends, of course). This one is a bit more freeform, but could still be rather fun.

==Clone Wars Mishaps==

This can allow players to play favored characters from The Clone Wars and run amok, either re-enacting an episode or playing along in some filler.

The only downside here is the abundance of Jedi and the (slightly) limited Force capabilities.

==Homebrew Madness=

Now that I have the "canon" out of the way, here are some other ideas.

--Ghost Ship: The players are boarding a seemingly abandoned ship (whether as a job or just because). What lies in store for them is unlimited, ranging from rebels that need help before the Empire comes back, a group of murderers that were left adrift, or an experimental droid gone haywire.

--For The Empire!: Turn the tables on what the group would expect and make them a specialized team working for the Empire. This can either be a group of Stormtroopers during the Rebellion, or an odd group like the Jokers in the Legacy era.

--Black Ops Jobs: These have always been a favorite of mine for one-shots when I have nothing better planned.

The players are hired to take care of something that needs the UTMOST secrecy. It could be smuggling important information behind enemy lines, bringing weapons (and the training for those weapons) to a group that needs them, an assassination, or stealing something like information or a ship prototype (I had a group steal a TIE Interceptor prototype in the past, for example).

These are just a few ideas. What have you all cooked up for a convention?

I generally recommend staying close to the OT and/or PT for a convention game. One lesson we learned the hard way is that you can't assume your players have any knowledge about star wars. I've had a table where knowledge ran from "I've seen the original trilogy movies once or twice." to "I read Heir to the Empire years ago".

As part of the DDC megagame, I've done an Imperial Ground Assault, Rebel Air Superiority, Bounty Hunter investigation, Padawan Order 66 survivors, Discovery of an ancient pre-jedi force artifact and more. This year we're doing a daring mission to gain secret intelligence from the Empire on Coruscant.

I think you could do a demo style game where 2 groups each have a task. Like on Endor, one group has to make a space battle while a second group has to deactivate the shields. Of course you probably need something other than just these two things but the success of one group can play into the success of the other.

Perhaps one group has to stop a convoy reaching the battle and reinforcing the Imperial forces. So This would entail locating the convoy, finding a way to divert it and then having that go wrong and the players have to improvise and do some fast thinking to ensure they remain a distraction for the convoy. At the same time a weapons research facility needs to be infiltrated and some one saved or some data stolen.

This could get bad if the reinforcements show up, or if the research goes into testing mode the group trying to distract the convoy could now become test subject number 1 and be in a world of hurt. In the final bit the two groups would be brought together to confront the bad guy, and depending on how well they performed they could send him packing and flee off planet or find that the rebels are in trouble and have to fall back and regroup.
