Daredevil with Damaged Engine

By donkler, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I'm not sure if this has been definitively answered yet, but if my ship has the Daredevil EPT and a Damaged Engine critical damage card, does it change anything about using Daredevil since it is now a red maneuver?

1) Does the ship receive an extra stress from performing Daredevil?

2) Can Tycho perform a red Daredevil maneuver if he has stress already?

The Core rules are all from the perspective that maneuvers only come from your movement dial at the start of activation phase, so I'm not sure which steps apply to performing the Daredevil maneuver.

Since daredevil is classified as a maneuver (you can bump and land on rocks with it) unlike boost, I would have to say that DD turns it to a red maneuver and Tycho cannot do it. This is further supported by the fact that they had to errata it to make it a white then give you a stress since the R2 astromech was making it a green and stressfree action.

Daredevil and damaged engine result in a red maneuver. There is no "check pilot stress" step so you do not receive a stress token from the red maneuver. You do receive a stress token from the daredevil card text (errata) for a total of one stress token.

Nobody can execute a red maneuver while stressed. Not even Tycho.

The issue being with Daredevil on any Awing with a damaged engine, that you declare the action, then try to perform the red turn. However you have no dial to hand to your opponent for them to choose a different manoeuvre. So what happens?....

You cannot perform the daredevil action. That is all.

You do not reveal a red maneuver. Therefore the "opponent chooses maneuver" rule does not trigger.

Well wait, say an un-stressed ship does, say, a white maneuver, then does Daredevil as its action. Why wouldn't you get two stress tokens? The rules say you get one when you execute a red maneuver, which Daredevil now has you do due to Damaged Engine, plus getting a stress token is a condition of using Daredevil.

EDIT: Never mind, I mis-remembered the stress rule and though it applied to any red maneuver, not just within the Check Stress step.

And you base that on what? The rule for revealing a red manoeuvre with stress already is that you hand you dial to your opponent. They choose your manoeuvre.

You never reveal a red manoeuvre with daredevil. So you cannot use that rule. So what does Tycho do? (I note it can only be Tycho since he is the only one who could actually perform Daredevil when stressed). He has already started the action.

You reveal a maneuver by flipping your dial face-up (rulebook page 7). That can only be done during the Reveal Dial step of the activation phase. Daredevil does not flip a dial. It does not reveal a maneuver.

Having already started an action does not matter. If you cannot perform an action, you back out of it and perform a different action. Examples: Target lock action with nobody in range. Barrel roll onto an asteroid. Boost into ships.
