JJ Abrams asked Disney to move date for Star Wars

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

IKwiz is reporting that JJ Abrams asked Disney to move up the release date of Star Wars Episode 7 The Force Awakens. The site claims that JJ Abrams is bothered by the leaks of the film and he wants to move the date so the fun is not spoiled before the December release. Here is the source:

All I have to say is "God let this be true!"

No way will this happen. Disney's already staked out its territory for summer 2015 and there'll be a lull in the fall that won't see much return at the box office. The next target of opportunity is going to be Christmas, and Star Wars VII is what'll be the Mouse House's tentpole that season.

Though it wouldn't surprise me if they moved the release date back to May 2016. I'd kinda be down with that. Hey we'd get two Star Wars movies in one year and then Episode VIII the following summer ;)

I'm just disappointed it's not being released on "May the 4th be with you".

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

Release it May the 4th. it has been foretold!!

The December release date is because of JJ. If he had had his way, it would've been May 2016. Iger wanted it this summer (not necessarily May, due to Avengers). And you don't rush the marketing plan like this. You also don't rush a special effects company who likely had a nice long time for their workload, and then up it to rush the movie out.

If he didn't move the date up of Star Trek Into Darkness with all the "Harrison" leaks, no way will Star Wars move up.

This is the most idiotic rumor I've heard.

To be honest I don't think any fun will be spoiled before the movie. The movie has to be good first and I reserve judgment for that.

...and Trade Negotiations

Considering all the movies based on books and other things I wouldn't see any reason for a few spoilers to require pushing up a release date. Knowing the story is likely less than half the reason anyone has gone to see a StarWars movie.

What books? All the EU was tossed out. All the new books released to date (ie tarkin) have been before 7

Where the movies were concerned, the books and other EU have never been a factor of any consequence. Even prior to Disney.

You misunderstood him. He meant movies that are based on books like Divergent, Hunger Games etc not being "spoiled"

Good books get turned into middling movies with big budgets because not enough people (can or want to) read the book. Cannot name a single movie I liked more than the book it was based off on.

There was a story saying he asked it to be moved from summer to winter as well. He was hired in 2013, and simply was not given enough time to make a movie. Joss Whedon has stood similar things about The Avengers and that when he was hired he asked for another year and they denied. Avengers is awesome, but it would have been very different given more time. From concept to writing to design to filming to SFX to editing, as someone in the industry, most people don't know how long it takes. And if they want to change things because of of leaks, it adds a great deal more time to the process, months at minimum.

Great: By telling us how worried he is by spoilers he's basically also telling us how important his dumb plot twists are. See: Star Trek 2, The Remake of Star Trek II.

Vader time travel shenanigans are go.

Yeah i am really not optimistic.

I can think of one. How To Train Your Dragon.

Also Game of Thrones is a brilliant, condensed version of the books. I feel like the show is as good if not better than the books, or at the least the writers did a great job taking a long series and adapting it into an extremely entertaining show.

Cloudy with a chance of meatballs was a decent book adaptation.

That is the point. Even if some of those movies don't exactly follow their books you generally have most of the major twists and turns revealed if you want to know before you go. Was anyone surprised in by Snappe's allegiances in the last HP movies? I know a lot of people may not read the books before seeing the movies based on them but they are out there if one goes looking for spoiler.

Let's talk Blade Runner.

Dont know if Blade Runner should even count. The movie leaves off the entire Mercer storyline (which I thought was interesting, if not exactly brilliant), and changes character names (which is a pet book to movie crime imo)

also, which version of Blade Runner are we talking about? Blade Runner is definitely a great film but it certainly earns the "based on" tag

And were all Fleming's books so brilliant that no Bond movie ever turned out to be better?

I enjoyed Blade Runner immensely more than the book.

What about Apocalypse Now vs. Heart of Darkness? I can't say I like the movie better, but I like it just as much. The pure brilliance in which he transposed the plot into Vietnam was enough to bump it up to equal the book.

It was much better than Cats. I'll see it again and again.

Star Wars movie is "on the boat"!
