Scam Alert! translucent dice

By Parsaver, in X-Wing

this is not a forum for the topic of debate about whether you should buy dice or not.

This is a warning to people out there that they're selling dice on ebay they're trying to pass them off as the translucent dice that were the promos someone would have gotten from regionals. They don't say this in the listing that they ate FFG official and if you ask them about it they won't respond. They just say a clear dice and they're lucky they played with them and that they are lucky. I bought a sad when they were under 100 dollars and when I got them it was pretty easy to see that they were fake. they don't have the bubble in them. They are a little bit smaller. the symbols aren't pressed as deep and the color is off, the green is too light and the red is too dark. right after mine were delivered the listed another set and right after those sold it listed another set under a different seller. If you want to buy dice go ahead but just make sure that you email them before you buy them and ask them if they are ffg dice because those are the only official dice that you can use to play with in tournaments.

I apologize for typos. Text to speech from phone :/

I believe there was a Midwest-area seller who was selling these fake translucent dice in eBay.

That was one of them. Another user ID is selling the ones listed now. Set of 12 for a much lower than usual price.

I also emailed one of the sellers asking direct questions about the bubbles, were they the 2014 regionals prize dice, and can you get a more detailed picture: "I'm sorry I don't know who you are referring too. These were a gift from someone."

Buyer beware!

Are you on the SoCal Xwing group? If so I have seen your warning...

Told me the dice were given to him buy a friend before he passed away.. .

Yeah SoCal X-Wing, great group of people!

Haha...I had a student that never had his homework. Somebody always "died"...that kid must have had 6 grandmas, 12 aunts, 35 cousins. All dead within months of each other!

We college faculty cross our fingers for the grandparents of the world! Around mid-terms and finals things get really dangerous out there for the elderly. There must be gang wars in the nursing homes a few times a semester.

To be fair if they're not saying they're official dice and they work it isn't a scam.

Yes the eBay sale that I saw for $150+ said nothing about the dice being official. All it said was that you should have more dice for the game and these are acrylic dice. I gasped at the bids I saw. But hey, if that is the going rate for dice then maybe I'm in the wrong profession.

Too bad though, really. For that price maybe the bidders and eventual buyer thought (without checking I'm assuming) that these might be official. If the seller said so in emails there may be recourse. Otherwise...

Caveat Emptor

It's totally misleading to run an auction for "Star Wars X Wing Miniatures Clear Dice" with a starting bid of $130 unless those dice are official. You know what would make this not shady and horrible? Just use the words "unofficial" or "third party" or even "X-Wing compatible" once, maybe in the auction title, maybe in the description. But that's not happening.

Calling this a "scam" is fine by me, since omission of relevant information -- the sort of thing that a bidder would certainly base their purchasing decision on -- is absolutely deceptive.

If they're official, why not say so?

In the auction I looked at, they were very careful to imply they were real, but not say it. It was very clearly misleading. Reproduction transparent dice should cost a few $$ per set, not $100s. There is nothing valuable about a knockoff set of transparent dice that are not even tournament legal. They are just dice at that point, and kinda useless ones since you can't use them at any official events where someone is aware.

I'm sure if folks stopped buying 'em, they'd stop charging $130 for 'em, y'know? It's a shame so many folks have fallen for it.

i don't understand why people pay so much for swag no matter what game it is

to me the swag means nothing unless i've earned it myself or traded it fairly for other swag. People need to stop with all this egotistical B.S.

who are you really impressing?

i'm impressed only by those that show skill in the game or are making one hell of an effort trying and they have my utmost respect

not the people who payed for their swag

sorry

Thanks to the OP for pointing this out, I'm glad these haven't sold. I did receive a 2nd response to my earlier request:

"gmail"

I can't tell you how much this screams scam (fake, but eluded to very rare dice) when someone wants to take the communication outside the official channels of ebay communication. Rest assured if you purchase these you will have no recourse if you expected them to be the 2014 Regional tournament prize dice by FFG (and if they really aren't).

You deserve what you get, if one is stupid enough to paid over $20 for dice.

I pay the iron price for my promos. But I'll sell em for the gold price.

$100 we could almost buy our on ship for that

I've contacted the seller of this auction to ask straight up if they know if these are official prize dice or if it's possible they may be unofficial. I'll post the results, if there are any.

UPDATE: No, the seller cannot confirm that they are official X-Wing dice. They were given to the seller by a friend, and the seller doesn't see why bubbles are important. But, you know, 12 not-necessarily-official dice are totally worth $130. Sheesh.

Considering that this seller has had more than one such auction I am pretty sure they are fake.
