Modifying a re-roll?

By Intys Rule, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I came across this scenario while watching a game today. One Rebel ship (can't remember which) had the ability to get the opponent to reroll (one or all, can't remember exactly) his attack rolls. The opponent had a TL on that Rebel ship.

EDIT: I think the ability was from a R7 Astromech....

1. Opponent rolls dice, then asks the Rebel player if he wants to activate the ability so that he (opponent) rerolls.

2. Rebel player says no.

3. Opponent then rerolls his dice by spending his TL.

My question here is can the Rebel player now use his ability to get the opponent to reroll the TL roll?

I hope I've explained that clearly enough....

No he can't as his window of modifying opportunity has passed.

During the Attack:

1. Declare target

2. Roll attack Dice

3a. Defender modifies attack dice

3b. Attacker modifies attack dice

4. Defender rolls defense dice

5a. Attacker modifies defense dice

5b. Defender modifies defense dice

6. Compare Results

R7 would come into play at 3a. If R7 isn't used at 3a, the attacker progresses to 3b and the R7 is now outside his trigger window.

Yes but isn't a re-roll from a TL essentially #2 again, so the Rebel player can modify it at 3a?

Basically, I understand "modifies attack dice" as spending focus since it turns eyes into hits... or any ability that modifies hits into crits or crits into hits. Since TL means you pick up the dice and roll it again, is it not like another attack like Luke/Gunner? Am I wrong here?

Talking about Luke/Gunner, if the opponent used their ability to re-roll the attack dice, does the Rebel player get to modify THAT second attack roll as per step 3a?

No, a reroll is a dice modification for the attacker, not another attack. The defender has once chance to make any modifications and that's straight after the initial roll.

If Luke/Gunner is used, they are initiating another full attack sequence so the process starts again from 1, and yes R7 does have an opportunity to trigger at 3a, but only at 3a.

During this step, players may resolve abilities and

spend tokens that allow them to modify attack dice.
This includes adding die results, changing die
results, and rerolling dice.

You can only reroll a given die once anyway. If a die gets rerolled with a TL nothing is going to reroll it again.

And as has been said, Gunner effects are a new attack, not rerolls.

Thanks for that clarification guys! Learned something new!

This came up for me last night and I wasn't exactly sure how to resolve it. I was defending with a target lock and R7 astromech while the attacker also had a target lock on me.

So I have first dibs at rerolling the red dice by invoking R7, and if I do, he can't use his target lock to reroll the ones I already made him reroll, right? Page 12 says only one reroll per die, so the fact that another player has made the call to reroll doesn't matter?

Right. That's why R7 is so bloody potent.

Cool. Thanks for clarifying. That was the first time I took R7 or the E-wing (Corran) for that matter. Just got to remember the timing and to do the free target lock from fire control system now...

Only one reroll no matter who causes it to be made. If you use R7 to reroll attack dice then he can't reroll them but it can freely modify them with other methods such as turning any [eye] results into [boom] results using a Focus token.
