So at our weekly Sunday game today we played an Ambush scenario we made up and I flew my Frat Boy list (Lambda Lambda Decimator) and I have to say for my first time flying the Decimator I was not impressed. I mean its a great ship with lots of options available, but I just didn't get that heightened heart rate, sweaty brow excitement I usually feel when I play X-wing. Maybe the Decimator is not the ship for me. I'll have to play it a few more times before I really know.
Played the Frat Boy list today...
It's not the typical large ship we've been used to for 3 waves.
The greens are on 2 and 3, so it's not a slow ship, and it can't actively avoid a lot of incoming red dice, so it's not the long lasting, game winner that we know and love.
You almost have to play it like a tie fighter: something you know is gonna die, that needs to get as much efficiency as it can before going down. The problem is that it's better the more points you dump in it.

I disagree. But then again, the only Decimator pilot I have ever used is Kenkirk, so my experience is quite different.
Just being able to survive 4 hits makes the Deci a fun ship for me. "Sorry, what was that? 5 hits? Sure. Is it my turn now?" ![]()
If it was any other Imp ship, it would be dead.
Edited by Intys RuleI tried a similar list in the recent Vassal tournament, and not having used a turret ship before those matches, I was glad when it was over because those were some of the least interesting games of X-wing I've ever player. I'm not sure if it's that using a turret rather than a from arc is less engaging, or that you don't have any green dice to add that element of chance, or both.
It seems like it has a lot of potential with its crew options, so I haven't written it off yet. So far I've only used Kenkirk, so I probably need to try the others out.

Idk but shuttles to me don't become very threatening, depending on what's on them
If you just had the bare bones then maybe try the decimator with something that can protect it better
Ties, phantoms, interceptor, etc etc
If you don't have engine boost once the shuttles fly by they are no longer a threat and the decimator would become an easy target, with no support
But then again I have no idea what you had on them or how it actually played out, so I'm just guessing
Here is the list I ran:
Patrol Leader Decimator
Recon specialist
Rebel Captive
Omicron pilot Lambda
Engine upgrade
FCS

FCS
Basicly I drove straight in towards the center of the board from the right hand corner (we played on a 6x4 board since there was 5 of us playing). Using a combo of Recon Specialist and FCS just laid waste to any who came within firing arc of the lambdas. Any who arc dodged out were targeted by the Decimators 360 canon. We won hands down. I almost felt bad for the other guys. My wingman had Echo, a Defender and 3 Obsidian TIE's.
Don't play the decimator like its a TIE fighter, toss an EU on it and play it like its Soontir and arc dodge the crap out of everything. 4 straight with a boost on a large ship is really putting the pedal to the metal.

I got that feeling playing Dash and playing against every large turreted ship
By coming in with plentiful hull + shield and ignoring some very fundamental rules of the game they're just way too safe and too handholdy, and way too boring ![]()
each to his own and all, but there's a very good reason for people to dislike them that has nothing to do with how effective they are

Except the firespray and the defender of course.
I have played a few games with it as well, and I think, like most turreted ships, you need to concentrate on getting out of arc. Fly it defensively, and i agree with the above that engine upgrade is the best defensive upgrade there is. Having siad that, I have yet to win with one, but I am still figuring it out. It's liek everyone is attacking you with autoblaster. Having Ysanne helps tremendously as well.
Maybe my problem is I am trying to keep it alive

Recon specialist is useless on a ship with 0 green dice. Sure you can use it while being shot through a astroid or at range 3 but... why would you use it?
