Questions from a beginner

By Zaekrex, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I read and re-read the section in the rulebook, and spent a good 15 minutes looking through the forum trying to find an answer to this.

In the section where it outlines what happens during each player's turn, it lists the mythos phase as the last phase of that player's turn, and says that the first player performs the steps for the mythos phase.

My question is: Is this something that the first player does at the end of each player's turn, or something that he only does at the end of his turn?

I played my first full game with 2 other players last night, and from a read through the rules we agreed that the Mythos phase happens every turn. However, the game was so hard (with the 3 of us, potentially 3 portals were opening every full round) that I am starting to doubt this was the way the game was meant to be played, but then again it was the first game for all of us so maybe Cthulhu is just stomping us. But the wording is ambiguous, it just says the first player in italics performs the mythos phase, but not if this means it happens at the end of each player's turn or if it only happens at the end of the first player's turn.

Anyway, I would appreciate any answers on this issue for our next session that is coming soon. :)

A turn is composed of every phase for everybody. It has been discussed already, I think.

Upkeep ! (player one, two, three...)

Movements ! (player one, two, three...)

Arkham Encounters ! (p123)

Other Worlds Encounters ! (p123)

Mythos : PLAYER ONE ONLY !

New Turn ! Player one changes to the unlucky moron on the left ! Do as described above.

Congratulations on your first game - and I hope you'll be relieved to know that yes, you were making things much too hard on yourselves.

Each of the five phases of the game round (Upkeep, Movement, Arkham Encounters, Other World Encounters, Mythos) is completely resolved for all players before you move on to the next one. So, after EVERYONE has finished adjusting skill sliders and refreshing cards, you proceed from the Upkeep phase to the Movement phase. After EVERYONE has moved, you proceed from the Movement phase to the Arkham Encounters phase, and so on.

So, looking at it that way, it's understandable why you might have read the rules that way - shouldn't EVERYONE draw and resolve a Mythos card during the Mythos phase? Well, that phase is the exception. ONE Mythos card is drawn and resolved (gate, monster, special effects, etc) and then you proceed back to the Upkeep phase.

Good luck in future games!

Ah, sorry Hem. Must've started typing just as you posted....
