Dear FFG.......

By Osoroshii, in X-Wing

I really love the game Rock, Paper, Scissor! However last week I went to an organized event and 80% of the players showed up playing Paper. This was very disheartening as a Rock player. There is clearly a balance issue with the game as I can't seem to beat Paper no matter what what I do as a Rock player.

I would suggest we make the following fix to Paper so the game can be more enjoyable for all ( by that I mean me the Rock player). So in a best of 3 match each player should only be allowed to throw Paper once every other round. This would allow for more varity in the game and everyone will have more fun.

P.S. Scissors are fine they way they are no changes needed to fix it!

Seriously, this comes across as whining. You found a small selection of players brought a specific type of list and you brought a list that is weak against it. That's not a balance problem but your list building problem. Perhaps you should better understand the local meta and plan accordingly.

I can hardly think of a less productive thread on these forums. Way to go OP, you sure showed... er, someone, I guess.

1/10, would not read again.

Can someone please tell me if/when the sky is falling?

I am honestly not sure at this point!!!

Well there is this one where we're making fun of this dude trying to sell fake passports... No wait that thread is more productive than this one.

It is a bit disappointing that the majority rock up with turret+ because it's strong. Very little variation which makes things boring.

Ah well. S&V will change it up.

In all honesty, I like the meta. Sure it's a Rock-Paper-Scissors-esque meta, but why should competitive players diversify proven strategies? If its going to win them a game, especially if it involves winning a regional bye or store credit, they should play a list that has proven time and again to be successful.

Yes, this does saturate the meta wherever X-Wing is being played, however, this does not mean it will be the end of X-Wing altogether. Games like these have meta shifts with every release. Before, it was Phantom vs. Falcon vs. Swarm. I don't think it's that defined anymore, because now we have Decimators and Dash and Mini-Swarms and Rebel 4 ship seems like it could be coming back. Now with Autothrusters, it could make ships such as the Aggressor and StarViper competitively viable next to Interceptors.

The meta only seems stale because lists are repetitive. Lists are repetitive because they are successful. Successful lists will be played when prizes are on the line. I went to my last store championship with Rebel Swarm (XXBBZ) and almost took down Han, mostly because of poor shooting on my part, but that amount of firepower can break a turreted ship, and I'm sure they could've taken on phantoms and the few swarms if I was able to stay. The guy playing next to me was also running Panic Attack, which is also a fun and interesting list that can make it into the top cuts.

I'm not sure if the OP was being serious or fecitious, but either way, we can't blame people for flying lists that win. This is coming from a guy who won a store champs with two 1300s, but has learned that the are ways to beat the meta. Right now, my current interest is in the Three Amigos list with Wedge, Luke and Wes. I feel that that is a well rounded and powerful enough list to muscle through a meta, but now I digress.

My advice for anyone feeling tired of X-Wing's R-P-S meta is to keep your hopes up and play the game for fun more often than for the competition. That's why you bought into it in the first place. Right?

We stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb. We put in the house rule to the old rock paper scissors. . . It was a shotgun, . . . Yup nothing like a face full of double ought buck to stop the whiners. Course it does have the unintended side effect of reducing the player pool but it really is a whole lot more fun than watching Francis flip another table cause he cant play toy soldiers with the big boys.. . . . .YMMV . . .. No animals were harmed in the making of this statement . . . . May cause constipation if read in too serious of a mood. . . Before taking any meds please consult your doctor first and share if he gives you the good stuff.

Dear people who attempt to use ellipses, they are three dots (...), no more, no less. Similar to certain group of evil Force users ;)

concur with heer oasean ork...

Are the people complaining some kind of crazy person who play in competitive events MORE than they play casually at a club?

Because I mean, hell, I go to the club and play whatever I want. The people I play against use whatever they want, whether that's 3 Shuttles, ABXY, Quad-Squints, Triple Trips or 3 Outer Rim smugglers. We have fun.

I'm going to three tournaments in the next two weeks though, and you can be **** sure that I'll be running Echo and pals in all of them, and fully expect to face frankly stupid numbers of Decimators and Falcons. But it isn't going to ruin anything for me, because then I've got another few months of just playing at the club for fun.

If your club, however, consists entirely of people playing competitive lists then I suggest you institute some kind of gentleman's agreement to NOT DO THAT EVERY DAY so that you can, you know, play more than three lists against each other.

I'm just sadden to hear not far from me that people are not confident unless they are flying turrets.

I can understand some but when I hear almost everyone attending is using rebel turrets, kinds of saddens me some.

Turrets has become easy mode

I'm going to practice against turrets builds just so I can beat them all

And phantoms

Can't wait to see what wave 7 has in store. Wave 6 has autothrusters, I have a feeling wave 7 will be another shift in meta

Rock-paper-scissor is a crap game.

Dear FFG, please make a game where your chances to win are decided during the game rather than before.

I was hopping for turrets in my area, unfortunately I think we all know how to beat them a decent amount of time now. my list sucked against all the 4 n 5 ship builds.

and any game that rolls dice IS decided when your playing. shure u can midigate it but its still rolling dice. when I go to the casino n play craps sometimes it takes me an hour to roll a 7, sometimes I do it right after I bet 50 bucks on 6, 8, 10...

Are the people complaining some kind of crazy person who play in competitive events MORE than they play casually at a club?

Well, for some of us (myself included) tournaments are when we can get most of my games in. I live too far away (1 hr) for me to meet up with my buddies often. I'm sure that for a lot of people, tournaments are where they can only get most of their games in. Not everyone can have free time to play X-Wing anytime they want. And also, for some people, like me again, the competition is where most of the fun is at. The fight has to have something on the line, in a sense, I guess.

Though I'm not complaining. I love my Z-95 swarms, and will keep playing some variation of that (most of the time) for the forseeable future. :D

"this bickering is pointless"

This would solve this issue immediately (and sell more models for FFG). It's a win-win.

From the Privateer Press Steamroller tournament rules:

Players can bring a second army list if they choose. . . . After the pairings and scenarios for the game have been announced but before the starting roll, each player secretly chooses one of his lists . . . . A player cannot change lists after making this selection. Both players simultaneously reveal their lists.

A actual book of scenarios and perhaps a campaign written like a module. Each fight being different objective and winner loser getting different rewards like they do in Star Wars Assault.
