Familiars and the Coop Quests.

By Badgermilk, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

I've been playing quite a bit of the Coop quests but yesterday for the first time me and my friend used a class with a familiar treated as a figure.

This resulted in a debate on how the familiar would be treated in the quest.

1. Since it clearly states "treated as a figure" on the card text and not "treated as a hero figure", does effects that targets "hero figures" affect the familiar.

Such as the shadow dragons "shadow" ability.

2. Since every single monster activation notes "hero" in their targeting and attack scheme, does that mean that the familiar is ignored throughout the entire Coop quest? As an example, if a monster is instructed to attack the closest hero, would it attack the familiar if that is the closest figure?

Hopefully someone else have had these questions and got an answer. =)

For the purpose of overlord cards and monster skills familiars are treated as a hero, so a familiar would be effected by shadows, as long as it is not stated otherwise, the same goes for the attack scheme to attack the closest hero. An example for a familiar which would be ignored is the shadow souls, as it clearly written that is not treated as a hero figure and therefore can not be the target of an attack. Hope that helps.

Thats what we thought, but we cannot for the life of us find rules that defines it, but maybe it is just me that can't read the rules correctly. =(

But you would say that in the COOP monster activation cards, "attack the closest hero" would attack the familiar if it exists?

Page 18 of the Rulebook, Familiars treated as figures: "Some familiars, such as the reanimate, are treated as figures (as indicated by its Familiar card). These familiars block line of sight and movement, but are considered friendly figures fore hero movements. They may be targeted and affected by monster attacks, hero abilities, and Overlord cards that target a hero. Similar to monsters, if they are required to make an attribute test, the automatically fail. Unlike normal familiars, these types of familiars are susceptible to the effects of terrain during their movement and may be affected by conditions. When a familiar is defeated, remove it from the map."

Going by this paragraph I would say that every familiar which is treated as a figure would be the target of such a COOP monster activation card.

1) You can find in the FAQ and the unofficial FAQ that anyhing "treated like a hero" (or "hero figure", terms are identical) counts as a hero for:

-hero and monster abilities, attacks, and OL cards.

-Nothing else unless stated (not quest rules, and as has been stated in FAQ, not even plot cards.)

2) Since the co-op cards are like substitute OL cards, I think it is definitely worth asking FFG (rules question link at bottom of page) for a sure answer- I do not know the intention. Strictly RAW, they would not count as heroes for coop cards.

Looking only the core game's rule book and the FAQ, this is true. Co-op "activation cards" are not mentioned because they didn't exist at the time those rules and FAQ answers were written. However, in the Forgotten Souls co-op rules, we have this little gem on page 7:

" When an Activation card refers to a "hero," this includes figures treated as hero figures. "

Therefore familiars (and any other tokens "treated as heroes") will count as heroes for the effects on these cards. Somebody at FFG was paying attention that day!

I haven't actually played coop, so I missed that. Good find!

Thanks!!

We missed that part. =)

Wrong.

Page 17 of the core rules makes it clear that familiars are NOT treated like heroes. They can't be targeted, figures can occupy the same space as a familiar, etc..

Page 18 of the core rules then adds "Some familiars, such as the Reanimate, are treated AS FIGURES." (Emphasis mine.)

It does NOT say that it they are treated as HERO figures...just "as figures."

If they meant for familiars to be treated as heroes, the would say so, but they did not.

To facilitate the co-op adventures, they added the following entry to the errata for the co-op games:

"Familiars are only considered heroes for Activation cards. When text
on Peril cards, Exploration cards, the cooperative adventure rules, or the
encounter guide references heroes or hero figures, it is not referring to
familiars, only actual heroes with Hero sheets."
So, no, familiars are not "treated like heroes" even if they are "treated like figures." HOWEVER, there IS a rule that says activation cards affect familiars.

Play accordingly! :-)

Other examples from the game support this:

1) The language in the Nature's Ire rule book describing the Desmond: "...he is treated as a hero," not "treated as a figure."

2) The FAQ adds language to the rule book explicitly stating that in addition to being able to add elixir tokens to heroes, you can also add them to familiars and allies.

This means that
