Hi all!

If you watch the Force Awakens trailer on YouTube you can see that there are a significant amount of dislikes on the video. However, if you watch the Avengers Age of Ultron trailer, there is an overwhelming amount of positivity. Now, I know this is complete OCD, but does this have some implications? Since there is quite a bit of negativity on the trailer, does that mean it will make less money than Age of Ultron? If it makes less money than expected then it may lead to the franchise as a whole being discontinued.

I know this is probably not going to happen, but as there isn't much to talk about, do you think The Force Awakens will make more money than Age of Ultron, even with more dislikes?

Honestly I didn't think Abrams' first Trek movie was that bad, certainly better then Nemesis IMO and about on par with Insurrection Into Darkness was horrible though

Eh, if the sequel trilogy turns out to suck I have fall backs. One, the original EU (which I love as a whole, though certain parts can go to hell). Two, the epic Darths and Droids spoof that will result. And three, this game, which is the last swan song of the Legends canon in many ways.

I loved the original movies, and enjoyed the early days of the EU and the WEG d6 game. I also liked Knights of the Old Republic, the only game that actually made me feel like I was in the movies.

I hated the prequels, have no interest in the anime stuff, and I won't watch the new movies. Even if I didn't think Abrams is a talentless 5th-rate frat-boy hack, I've no interest in sequels and wish they'd just left our heroes on Yavin, roll credits, immortality.

Great for those who want more SW stuff, but just not my thing. And that's fine by me. Some of the players say they will see the movies, but none of us seems to think they'll be anything beyond a pale shadow of what once was.

EoE brought me back because of the emphasis on the original films, and my long-held desire to re-write everything to make a darker, more grown-up game without losing the themes of the originals. I've been very impressed by the system and the fanbase,

To be fair, I think the media played exaggerated that a lot. Sure, there definitely were the racist/bigoted morons out there, but when aren't there? A lot of the comments I saw were genuine confusion from the casual fans along the lines of "black stormtrooper? I though the stormtroopers were that kiwi clone guy?"

I think the hate for the lightsaber will all disappear if we see it in action. A lot of people thought Mauls saberstaff was rubbish until we saw it in action, now it's one of the best weapons out there

Personally i find the new design intriguing, i just hope that the Force and her users don't take up too much screentime.

The Star Wars fandom has always been a strange beast.

Given how freaking ginormous Star Wars is as a franchise, there is simply no way that you're going to please everybody. You can either please some of the folks all of the time, all of the folks some of the time, but you can't please all of the folks all of the time.

As for the positive response to Age of Ultron, one should bear in mind that said movie is riding off of a massive hype wave that started all the way back with the first Iron Man movie and has only been bolstered by the runaway success of The Avengers as well as the simple fact that on paper Guardians of the Galaxy should have flopped big time and yet was one of the biggest hits of 2014. Marvel Studios have proven that they can make a good movie with even their C-listers, so a film with their A-list heroes is going to have a lot going for it.

For Star Wars on the other hand, it's last cinematic outing was the CGI The Clone Wars flick to introduce the TV series, and it didn't exactly engender a lot of positive response. Before that, you've got the prequel films, which posters like Maelora loathe just on general principle while folks like me generally enjoyed them; I agree they're not as good as the Original Trilogy of films, but I don't see them as being the utter garbage that some "fans" paint them as being.

So, with a new set of Star Wars films on the horizon and being done by somebody other than George Lucas, that creates a lot of uncertainty in any fanbase, to say nothing of one that can be as divisive and derisive as the Star Wars fan base can be. Again, the hullabaloo over the crossguard lightsaber or the ball droid or that there's a black stormtrooper. Me, I've of the camp that's saying "Get over yourselves! It's new STAR WARS films!"

To be fair I wouldn't use Taylor as an example, only Billy Dee. Taylor played a Twilek alien with head tentacles and green skin. We probably wouldn't use Michael Carter as an example of a white guy (played another Twilek, Bib Fortuna).

I agree with the notion there are a few idots who will always find something idiotic to say about Star Wars no matter what is done. The vast majority could care less about the Stormtrooper being a black guy once they understand they aren't all clones based upon Jango.

I only have 2 issues with the saber:

1) a concept art of plo koon with a saber claw and a note from George saying he wasn't sure about that.

2) the gimmicky precedent.

I'm willing to withhold judgment, and have an open mind, because after all George has been wrong before, but we also know from the EU that later story tellers are always trying to one-up eachother, and lightsaber variants are a way they think they need to do that.

Meh, if I based anything on what people thought of things I would never have found half the the things I enjoy. At the end of the day the only one that influences me is me. I loved the OT. The PT disappointed me only insofar as it was not the story I expected. The Clone Wars series is all right but doesn't blow me away like it does other people it seems. I'll go see it because it is Star Wars and draw my own judgement. As a kid I saw Star Wars in 77 numerous times in the theater. Just about every weekend I would go to the theater to watch it again, not knowing when I'd get to see it again. These days I know something will eventually make it onto dvd so i can wait once I've seen it. Unless I really enjoy it on the big screen. I returned to see Avenger numerous times as I did with Guardians. That is most telling thing about any movie is that even knowing I will eventually have it myself I still want to see it in the theater. If that happens for me with the new Star Wars movies then that is a success to me.

I didn't loathe the prequels on 'general principle'. I loathed them because I thought they had lousy plots, poor acting and undermined the things I liked about the originals (Darth Vader was actually a twerp, rather than cool as I'd always thought, and the Force was now Space Germs....)

My opinion, yours may vary. I've never claimed to speak for others.

And as for people who dislike them being 'fans' and not fans... Do we get to decide who is a 'real fan' and who isn't? Is there a requirement? Do you have to like 75% of the output? 50%? What's the pass mark?

I've always been pretty honest that I enjoyed the original films, the early WEGd6 game when everything was still being created and the lore was up for grabs, and the occasional videogame. And I'm a very enthusiastic fan of the FFG game (it brought me back to Star Wars after all). Everything else, not so much. I don't see it as objectively wrong, just not to my tastes.

There were two parts of the teaser trailer that made me roll my eyes, and I have come around on both to varying degrees.

What strikes me as interesting about the new hilted lightsaber is that it feels like a lightsaber designed specifically for combat with other lightsabers. In spite of the fact that we always, always see lightsaber duels in the films, TV shows, books, comics, games, etc., I never thought the lightsaber was created to be a dueling weapon. It was symbolic and it was defensive, and it just so happened that characters ended up dueling with lightsabers because Darth Vader was a Jedi who broke bad and still used the weapon to fight.

A lightsaber with this weird sort-of hilt, though, that only makes practical sense if the guy wielding the weapon is planning to fight other people with lightsabers. That tells me something about the character, even more so than Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber.

As for the ball droid, at first I thought it looked stupid, and CGI, and "not Star Wars"...whatever that means...

But then I thought back to the movie Interstellar, which features a robot that looks utterly, embarrassingly stupid. When I saw the robot in Interstellar, I nearly checked out of the movie; I thought it was a deal breaker. But as the movie progressed, the robot was used to greater effect, dramatically and comedically, to the point where the robot was one of the few bright spots in the film. If Interstellar can show me a droid that looks asinine but eventually wins me over, I'm willing to grant the ball droid in The Force Awakens the same leeway.

Seriously though, aside for a lack of thumbs, Tars was awesome.
