Trouble with PC's

By RoBro, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

What do I do if all my acolytes dont listen to there inquisitor at all and constantly make fun of him. They dont follow order they call him an old fart and threaten him. In Illumination when the inquistor went back to bed before the plainsong cerimony the acolytes killed the bartender and stool the beer. During the cerimony they yelled things out like "worship the devil" and "heresy lives on" And this becomes very frusterating. I dont know what to do

If they dont listen have them sufer consequences. like durring a ceremony them shouting vulgarities they get mobbed by ministorum people, stealing gets them put in prison for a while and their gear taken, and threatening an inquisitor gets them tortured. make them go in line or make them suffer those are always my rules.

Sounds like you're a very leanient GM. I would've minimum severed a limb or gouged an eye during a horrible interrogation, removed their equipment and send them off to another mission without healing.

That'd be for the first insult.

lol i like your style fideru

At this point they should all be dead for Heresy. Really you cant do **** like that in 40k and expect to get away with it. First thing I would do would be to stat up the Inquisitor and his retinue way above anything the PC's can handle, dont forget kickass equiptment and lots of fate points. Then next time one of them makes a snarky comment you take him for interrogation, make it long and detailed and with lots of nasty consequences. If they have been really bad you kill him, space him or servitor him (without anesthetic). I once wrote an intro where if one the players acted stupid or disrespectful then they got shot and killed instantly.

Let them know they cant pull this **** in the Imperium. If they dont stop then its probably a lost cause or you break them of from the Inquisitor and lead them down the path to chaos and see how forgiving the chaos gods or thier followers are (also allows you to play a mind f**k game). Also a good excuse to use Radicals Handbook when it comes out.

I believe your inquisitor is just a wee bit too lenient wit them. The first disrespectful word to my inquisitor out of an underlings mouth would result his said underling having his tongue torn out so that no such obscenities may flow from their mouth again. It would be torn out, not in anger or malace, but from just a need to halt the obscenities from again flowing from that mouth and instruct any others present as to the proper sounds a tongue should make vs improper sounds and what should be done with such a deseased organ if it should start making such improper sounds in his presence.

With your cell, i would say the Inquisitor should have little to do with them. You perhaps made him too accessible and too familiar to them which might have made him less ominous and authoritative.

Secondly, at the very lest, if no other consequence comes from their actions, then they should at least become his "canary cell". Their jobs and assignments should be just like a canary in a coal mine; they're sent in places to see just how dangerous said places are. Is there a strange energy leaking in a hive that may be deadly, may be mutagenic, but no one's too sure? Send in the Canary Cell with only half the needed protective gear to see what the deal is. If they survive, the inquisitor may or may not know what's causing the energy, but, and more importantly, he will definitly know what effects it has of people not suited in vac-suits vs those who are and how to best suit up his more trusted acolytes when he sends them in to actually deal with the problem. Or if he has an important ob that needs doing which will result in a lot of dead bodies yet does not want to let the local law enforcement to get tangled up in it, he could send in his Canary Cell with faulty information, a fake mission, and evidence on them tat frames them for all those bodies that were found. With a bit of additional "leaked" information about them being heretics of some stature to the local officials and they will be running around like their asses were on fire dodging enforcers, kill-squads and anything else the city could throw at them while the Inquisitors good cell is able to get the ob done without any interference thanks to the massive distraction of the Canary Squad tying up all of the cities resources in the hunt for them.

In other words, if they act the fools, then they should get the fools job.

In the future, you need to respond to their actions with appropriate in game responses. Heresies at a religious gathering is the stuff torch bearing road-hulling lynch-mobs is made from. It doesn't matter how well armed or armoured they are, 50 citizens wouldn't have much trouble grappling them, disarming them, and stringing them from the nearest tree or trying them to it and lighting them up... or crushing them under a door and several tones of rocks, you name it. And, unless it's all a part of his plan, an Inquisitor shouldn't allow an underling (that's almost everyone) disrespect him. To do such is not only a grave heresy showing contempt for the Emperor himself by showing disdain for his most holy of servants, but it also undermines the Inquisitors power. He, after all, only has the power those around him allow him to have.

Out of curiosity, are you guys in high school? It sounds like it.

If this isn't shenanigans, my only suggestion is to resign yourself to a silly game, or to fine other people to play with. My suggestion if you decide to get silly is to have the inquisitor publicly bum **** each of the acolytes with a large, dead salmon. Then drop a screaming, flaming cow on them from orbit.

im in highschool and so was one of my former gms. we had a situation like this before with one of the pcs goofing around...he got his flamer tank hit with a bolter round...with it still on him. Problem solved after that.

son of a b***h!!! bet that hurt

Sentence them to arco-flagellation, or at least the loudest and most heretical acting of them. The rest can be given an explosive collar around their neck like those from penal legionnaires with the warning should they ever again act in someway heretical, it will blow off their unworthy heads. Strip them of any valuable equipment and marks of authority. Should they ever insult their Inquisitor, show them how bad-ass the old fart is in fact and either use very powerful psychic powers against them (Psychic Crush one acolyte in a Darth Vader manner, Compel/Dominate one acolyte to shot another acolyte in the face, Incinerate or Blood Boil an acolyte with a wave of a hand) or let him draw his Best Quality Lathe Power Sword / Daemon Hammer to cut the limbs of one or two acolytes (or cut one in half) in a single round or his Best Quality Inferno Pistol to melt the nerest acolytes face.

Inquisitors are simply not the kind of people to ***** around with...

yeah my inquisitor (my character) would just sick his daemonhost on them...and watch and laugh as all the limbs fly off them demonio.gif

Stop playing with this group. They obivously do not really want to play it, otherwise they would not completely ruin it.

Wait for "Rogue Trader" to be available. In RT, the players do not have superiors do make fun of, since they ARE captain and main advisors.

If they do thinks like that in RT, simply turn the world against them. They are shooting heretical insulst to clerics? The make fun of a governeur? Of the emporer? Let the hammer come down. This will take them time, let them go on. Big things need time to move. Then, bring a small fleet against there ship and kill them to the last one of them.

If you really want to to keep DH with them, the "Acroflaggelant advise" seems fine. But do not wait another session. Next time you see them / eMail them, simply tell them the following.

"Next session we will make new characters for you, since all of your pc will be executed for heresy for what they have done.

If not on the spot, then in the near feature. I see no need to play this out. If your next group behaves the same, this will start over again."

One of two things are going to happen (besides your players becoming mad at you)

- this will start over again and again till none of you wants to play any longer
- at least a core group of your players will "get straight" and start to behave reasonable.

.....Are you sure we don't have the same party? The scum resorted last session to:
"I'm scum"

Me: What?? You don't think you're scum, you said you were a vendor owner on Scintillia?"

"Yeah, but it says scum on the sheet"....

I'm thinking of having them shot for insubordination...Or killed on one of the Inquisitors training missions >.>

I think you've got two problems - ingame and out of game.

Ingame.

To maintain logcal consistency, and therefore the willing suspension of disbeleif, the Inquisitor has to dispose of these PCs. they are simply a poor choice for his staff/distaff. Either the Inquisitor himself, or more likely his loyal minions have to 'retire' (kill) the PCs en mass for the game to have any hope of going forwards.

Once you've done the deed, you then have to address the 'out of game' issue. This is a discussion with your friends/players about wether they want to play Dark Heresy. It sounds to me like they'd be better suited to playing 'Teenagers from Outer Space' or some similarly 'fun', non-serious game.

If they do actually want to play Dark Heresy, you need to agree among yourselves ground rules for behaviour, whats expected of an Acolyte, etc...otherwise you're best off abandoning things for a while...maybe play a few board games for a few weeks to get the silliness out. I understand FFG do a good line in board games...

I can't really add anything to the excellent advice that has already been given. I will say that I hope this works out for you, because Dark Heresy is just a lot of fun.

How well do these players know this inquisitor?

I'd be very tempted to utterly mindf**k them, for example have them drop into some hostile situation with the Inquisitor, a big fight etc

Halfway through have another Inquisitor turn up and kill the first one (the one they make fun of). Have this new inquistor the opposite of the first (young? violent? and definately no tolerance for backchat) and have his absolutely badass retinue make it very plain that any disrespect will go badly (guns sabotaged with backfiring ammo, grenades swapped for duds, vaccum suits with holes in, airstrikes that land on them instead etc). Think subtle punishments to prolong their pain! gui%C3%B1o.gif

The players should be press-ganged into the new inquisitors service, they'll hopefully see the new one with more respect, and if not you can have fun with them for a while. The new inquisitor should never do any of the work however - always his underlings! The new inquisitor should be too powerful and too important to deal with the "pondscum" players.

Just imagine when the players start going to the inquisitor to plead for help because somebody slipped a Tybaltian Black Scorpion into their boots (again) and Johnny Acolyte has to have his foot amputated, the inquisitor now becomes a saviour and not a figure to be mocked.

Loads of good ideas here! Although it can be irritating to have awkward players, especially who constantly insult main characters (I know, i have my own happy.gif ) it can actually be used as a good way for them to interact with the 40k world. Yes, an inquisitor wouldnt stand for it, people in a church wouldn't stand for it. Give them consequences! Cut off libs, send them to prison, get all their gear stolen, kill off their weak inquisitor. If nothing happens when they insult everyone and spout heresy then they will keep doing it. Consequences can be great hooks. The hardest thing is having them without spoiling carefully laid plotlines.

If they insult the inquisitor again, I'd suggest getting the players into a secure location without weapons (my troublesome players are pretty gung ho) then have their inquisitor tell them (safely behind glass or surrounded by bodyguards...maybe after a painful interrogation) that he his sending them to a penal legion to die for their sins. Take all their gear away, give them exploding collars, take them through a series of dangerous/suicidal military missions and then have their inquisitor whisk them back into his fold once they have learned their lesson. Of course this completely disrupts any adventure you had planned, but it's an adventure in itself.

The most important thing is to show how they are so much better off working dilligently for the inquisition.

If my players had pulled that, Sister Calista would have punted them out an airlock... dead or alive.

Then again, when the campaign ended, they were starting to realize her years as an inquisitor had made a heretic out of her.
