I can't account for every list at the championship as there was a solid turn out, but there were some interesting lists that proved to be quite effective. I plan to comment on the battles I took part in and be as fair as I can be to the players involved.
My list consisted of:
Darth Vader + Engine Upgrade (33)
Soontir Fel + Puch the Limit (30)
"Whisper" + Veteran Instincts, and Advanced Cloaking Device (37)
My strategy is simple... Outmanoeuvre and overwhelm with actions. I prefer moving last and gaining battle field advantage over Tank Builds and straight on jousts.
My fist round was devastating... I face two YT-2400 with recon specialist (Wild Space Fringer w/ Heavy Laser Canon & Eaden Vrill), and a B-Wing w/ Advanced Sensors. If there was a counter to my list. I feared this one the most! the First round of combat I manage to take the shields off Vrill and Soontir got hammer into an early grave... Not looking so good but the tides turn and I slowly hammer the 2 YT's in to the ground and I out manoeuvre the B-Wing and take the win, losing only Soontir.
My second game I faced off against 2 A-Wings, 2 B-Wings +Advanced Sensors, and Roark Garnet. I wasn't looking forward to this battle either because of the amount of ships and hull I would have to shoot through. I don't think my opponent understood how annoying I would be when I would Push the Limit every turn with Soontir (after a Green Manoeuvre) and either Boost and Barrel Roll (stress + Focus for Soontir's ability) out of arcs or Focus, Evade + Focus for a turtled Interceptor. He had also never faced a Phantom... So the Decloak + Advanced Cloaking and a focus for landing a Hit really messed with his head. Combine that with Vader's natural double actions he was in over his head. I took out all of his ships with only loosing the shields on Whisper.
Third round was even tougher! I face off against 2 Z-92's, 2 X-Wings and Etahn in an E-Wing. I was playing someone I normally played and I thought I would do well. Turns out I didn't anticipate how well he know where I wanted to be! although I had the higher pilot skills I couldn't line up a shot to save my life. I mistakenly flew my whole list at his whole list which led to Whisper taking both her shields and taking one damage. I decided that I would run with Whisper to hopefully lure the rest of his ships away and it "kind of worked". He pursued with two ships while I flanked with Vader and Soontir. The match went to time and I managed to take down 1 D-95 and an X-Wing while suffereing no losses.
Round 4 was a funny round! I flew against a very good friend and an astounding X-Wing player! he had and interesting list which I thought would be a solid challenge but dice were not on his side at all. I feel bad for him, really. He flew Whisper + Veteran Instincts, Fire-Control System, Tactician, Advance Cloaking device and Rexler Brath + Proton Rockets, Heavy Laser Canon, Marksmanship and Experimental Interface. He gave me initiative and I know I would have a hard time pinning down his Whisper... after two rounds of manoeuvres I found his Whisper in range of all of my ships and I FIRED FIRST!!! Needless to say she didn't last the round. Vader got hit hard and was down to 1 Hull and we were back to dials. I was expecting a K-Turn with the Defender so I thought I would position accordingly. I was wrong. BUT! I did have all guns on Rexler and he went down that round. 10 minutes from the start of the game it was over. Time for the top 4!
Surprisingly, the semi final round was against my previous opponent. He took initiative and thought it would be different this time. It wasn't... Poor guy! his dice had died and in 10 minutes his fate was the same as the round before only I took out Rexler first...
The Final round was coming up and we were all tired. I faced off with the previous champion from an other tournament earlier in January. He flew the same squad. Two Blue Squadrons with Advanced Sensors, Gold Squadron with an Ion Canon and R3-A2 and Tarn Mison with an R7 Astromech. All of his ships are 25 points which made it hard to pick a primary target! He flew in a tight formation and I made a crucial mistake that landed Whisper on an asteroid. He took advantage of my mistake and Ioned Whisper. By that time Soontir has been one-shoted by a B-Wing and Vader was running around looking for a signal... Back to dials... He purposly bumped his Y-Wing into Tarn and cased Tarn to bump into the Y-Wing meaning Whisper bumped into his X-Wing and stayed on the asteroid, again! Ugh! Whisper ate it the next turn and I tried a Hail-Marry shot from Vader on his B-Wing with only two Hull left. Nothing! I conceded and took second. His list was fabulous and his flying and tactics were spot on. I lost by a long shot but I feel good about a 5 - Win 1 - Loss day.
