Be Thankful You Don't Play Dust

I hopped on the Dust train a bit late, after FFG released it to Battlefront. It's a fun game, with about the quality you'd expect from a former FFG miniatures game. Sad that something like this has to happen, but those of us who play X-Wing (and other games) can be that much more thankful it isn't happening to us. Just thought I'd share a little perspective with y'all.

I have backed probably 6 or so kickstarters. This is scary.

Andy Chambers (of 40k fame) was doing something for DUST once ('dust tactics', 'dust warfare'?, i honestly cant recall) and i did some playtesting with my mate Andy Hoare (because he knows Andy C a lot better than I do and Andy C wanted his feedback)

Admittedly Andy H and I were playing it with proxy minis (regular WWII ones and a few 40k ones) so we probably didnt get the visual impact of the game but I just didnt think DUST (which ever version it was we were playtesting) was that good. Certainly not up to the quality of game that Andy Chambers usually writes.

It might have been me and 'wwii' as well, as a living history type, i'm not made on 'wierd world war two'... i can just about run (shuffle?) with nazi zombies but stuff like Gear Krieg left me cold too.

I felt really bad saying I thought it was a bit boring and not very well thought out but there is no point playtesting stuff and not being honest.

Having skimmed the linked thread... i wouldnt be surprised if BF did something really dodgy.

The guy who set it up, i used to know him.

In the past he once just completely failed to turn up to run the security at an 8000 person Games Day convention in the UK, leaving his second to jump in at the last minute to co-ordinate the teams.. his excuse.. he was working on a presentation to new line about some forthcoming LOTR game material we were doing (for return of the king i think)... Now given its a fairly hefty licence its *reasonable* for him to focus on that and not helping out at games day.. would have been nice if he'd have called anyone to tell them he wasnt turning up though :)

He also put a lot of pressure on GW to make him a director because his dad was a major shareholder. They refused and *allegedly* he urinated all over the newline/lotr props/memorabilia in the studio then resigned (i know he resigned, i cant be sure he really wee'd over everything but that was the tale told at the time).

So JP 'B'. Who set us BF is capable of fairly nobbish behaviour. He's also very rich though so i wont say anything else in case he sues me for libel!

I find it to be quite an entertaining game, when played on the tiles at any rate. When I want the full tabletop experience I opt for a game of 40k or Warmachine instead. The rules are quite simple, albeit with a few corner cases that are rather poorly illustrated. The whole alternate history thing is what drew me in in the first place, that and the walkers. Walkers! It's a ridiculous premise, to be sure, but I enjoy it quite a bit. Especially when I get to zombie-punch the heaviest of tanks to death. I suppose that's all rather well beside the point I was raising earlier, which was about the dispute between Battlefront and Dust Studios.

I missed the kickstarter by mere days, and immediately regretted it. Then months passed and the few folks I knew who ordered things never received them, and I was beginning to grow impatient alongside my friends. Now here we are, well over half a year later, and this issue suddenly comes to light. Things occasionally look grim in the gaming industry at large, but they're seldom this grim. I really don't know who or what to believe at this point, but as someone with a vested interest in the long term health of the game, I hope the two parties are able to work things out amicably.

I really wanted to spend a lot of money on that Kickstarter but I just didn't trust Battlefront. Really sucks that I was right to be worried , but at least I did get my $1.00 worth, I got the pdfs and I can use them no matter how bad Battlefront screws that pooch. Oh yeah Gadge , Andy Chambers was involved with Dust Warfare a FFG product that used the Dust Tactics minis. Same minis just 2 different rules sets and I agree with your description of those rules I am still a Dust Tactics player just letting it sit in the closet until the "dust" settles. Matter of fact now that I think about it the stink from Battlefront started just as my son got me interested in X wing . Go Fig .

DUST is a great game with a great universe.

very sad to see this kickstarter go so poorly.

Hard to see anything but wrongdoing on Battlefront's end...their has been near zero support from them for months.

Things are getting even more grim. Couldn't find the Dust Tactics main page, and it turns out that while it was run by Battlefront, Dust Studios owned the domain, which they chose to discontinue. Can't even find the new domain through a casual google search, unless you already know it's been moved to World of Dust.

http://www.theworldofdust.net/

Until recently, this website was accessible through several different domain names. One of these, www.dust-tactics.com, is owned by Dust Studios, who have decided to discontinue this domain.

From now on, the best way to access this site is to use the domain www.worldofdust.net. The website content remains unchanged, and will continue to offer support for Dust Tactics, Dust Tactics Battlefield and Dust Warfare, along with our active discussion forum.

We apologise for any disruption or inconvenience.

Lets hope X-wing remains going strong under the FFG merge.....
