Optimal X-pilot / Astromech pairings

By PaulTiberius, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I think Porkins is best used with Stay On Target. If you use PTL, you just gain the ability to TL and Focus in the same turn. That's...OK. I'd rather have the maneuverability for a high PS X-wing. Either that or Expert Handling.

I could also see taking no EPT on Porkins to save points. He still gets to K-turn and remove the stress. Or even spend the points on a Hull Upgrade, instead. It just makes him that much harder to kill as he can remove the damage each turn.

At the risk of being accused of necro'ing a thread, how do you think the "X wing" fix integrated astromech affect these builds? I have been reading the various thread about the new mod only really helping the generics, but i think it also helps named pilots not named Luke or Wedge.

Well, it certainly reduces the relative cost for putting Astromechs on the Xs, as it's hardwiring them into a free Hull Upgrade as well.

Sorta.

See, one of the best things about the card is that you can discard your Astromech early to avoid Crits, like Crewbacca!

I view it as all X-Wing Astromechs also become "S&V Salvaged Astromechs" also.

Probably best used with a Generic R5 (which comes with the Wave 1 X-Wing expansion) as any "ship" critical you can deal with R5 through his ability. Or scrap him and the damage card altogether.

R5 I'd say is only useful when counterbuilding critical-damage fleets.

It's only useful on 21/33 of the damage deck, which will only come into play for 1/4 of the incoming damage (or 1/6 if they prefer Focus to Re-rolls for modification), and only then if it hits 2 of your Hull rather than 2 of your Shield.

And r2 is only really useful when counterbuilding panic attack...

So what are the optimal pairing with the T-70 pilots and astromechs?

R2-D2

Poe

Red Ace (maybe)

BB-8:

Wedge w/PTL

Poe w/PTL

Red Squadron Veteran w/PTL

A case can be made for any X wing that can take PTL

R5-P9

Poe

Red Ace (maybe)

R7-T1

Blue Ace

With Red Ace Comm Relay makes sense, but what astromech makes the most sense? Regen mechs?

Hobbie with R2-D6 (think that's the EPT droid?) and PTL.

I'm seriously considering him and Porkins both with PTL and a group of Bandits to help run interference.

R5-P9 and Poe is just incredible.

Focus action leads to: +.578125 damage on attack, +.4375 evades per defense, and + 1 shield regenerated (either through R5-P9 or actually dodging 2 damage with the token).

Poe's ability on his own is comparable with Lone Wolf, and adding R5-P9 for free shield regeneration is the peice de resistance.
