Make it work: Boba Fett Empire

Our store is starting a unique idea Called Make it work:

In order to get all ships to the table and test everyone's piloting and squad building skills. Everyone has picked 2 ships they find hardest to build a squad with. Then, they were each put into a hat and one was drawn. The first one is boba fett. So anymore Fetts drawn will be ignored. Each week one will be drawn and points will be earned for winning the tournament.

Rules:

Each player must include Make it work ship( Boba Fett Empire this week) in their list. Then small round robin tournament will be fought each week and if you win you earn 2 pts, runner up 1 pts., third place .5 pts. After all ships have been drawn the total points winner will earn a unique Fel, and 2nd place a unique black squadron, 3rd place a ten numb. All were purchased from Ebay.

So onto the list:

So I figure most people will go with Fett and 4 or 5 ties and classic fettagator

I'm trying to do something different.

I was thinking

Fett, Autoblaster, Prox Mines, Pred, Mara, Engine Upgrade

Decimator, vador

100 pts.

I have almost no experience playing with Boba. I figure boost in close and stress everyone and then hit them with the autoblaster. I want to try something unique and different the HLC and Swarm.

What does everyone think of this unique list?

Whatever you do I'd aim it at taking out Firesprays since half of every list you face will be Fett.

I like this. If I want to play this I need to get another Firespray before tomorrow. Not sure where I can find one though. Plus scum's not out yet, so no calc or mangler.

Even though I'm flying Boba and Chiraneau tomorrow, for a Boba specific tourney I personally would go away from a Decimator.

Ask yourself the question, would you rather attack with three dice where the hits cannot be cancelled by dice or attack with four dice?

I might go for something like two Royal Guards with PTL, or even

General firespray tactics:

recon spec is great crew. focus for offense and focus for defense.

the rear arc is great- fly just past someone on your movement and adjust with boost to get your rear arc to face your target

boba fett + navigator + VI is decent as a phantom hunter

Recon specialist, lone wolf.

It's cheap and tough.

Fett is already close to being too inefficient to run, so don't load him down with a bunch of upgrades unless you have a very specific idea for how you'll leverage them to get back more points than the upgrades cost.

Engine Upgrade is a good buy, and with that in the build, Predator gives you some space to boost without losing the ability to modify your attacks. You might also consider adding a Rebel Captive (which will essentially function as insurance against against enemy Phantoms) or Recon Specialist to improve his defense, or maybe Ysanne Isard if she's not committed elsewhere in your build, but those get you to a precarious 49 or 50 points.

**EDIT: As noted upthread, Lone Wolf is even better than Predator if you can keep the rest of your list out of the Range 2 bubble. But if you haven't tried Lone Wolf before I wouldn't recommend picking it up on short notice, because the Firespray will be faster than you think and the bubble will be way bigger and less convenient than you expect.***

As for the escorts, I'd actually steer clear of the Decimator. You don't have enough points left for a really fat one, and I think outside of a few good combinations that cover each other's weaknesses unusually well (like Corran/Dash or Whisper/Kenkirk), two-ship lists are a big risk.

If it were me, I'd take advantage of the fact that you know you won't see a Falcon or Outrider and the fact that it's at least tough to fit a Decimator into a list with Fett, and run a pair of Royal Guards with Push the Limit.

It was a ton of fun. Both Hyper mobile and at PS 8, they flew well together.

Backstabber

Boba's ability sucks, unless you go down the fettigator road. His value is being the highest PS firespray, and one of two that has an EPT.

This creates an interesting dynamic in that you know you'll be fighting Fett.

The first thing I'll do is mercilessly steal SableGryphon's idea and suggest Outmaneuver as your EPT. Fett's ability is much more powerful when you make maximum use of his rear arc. Navigator's kind of a no-brainer: unless you can think of a much better crew option it pairs really nicely with Fett. If you think people are going to jump for the Phantom VI is also a good choice: PS10 Fettigator is an excellent ghostbuster. Engine Upgrade makes him even better at it.

If you really don't want Navigator Fett's ability is still pretty good without it. One thing I would point out is that Firesprays have a high hull rating (and a Hull Upgrade makes it even higher) so Ysanne Isard might not be a bad buy.

As for the rest of the list, go for something that can kill a Firespray because you will be up against one every tie. Fettigators are hard to block and have high pilot skill.

I'd suggest the TIE defender (a high PS crit machine Rexler Brath's a good shout) or a squad of TIE bombers with Prox Mines. Maybe even a second Firespray.

Ships to avoid:
ACD TIE phantom. PS10 Fettigators will catch them with their trousers down.

I'm tempted to suggest the TIE interceptor as one to avoid too if your plan is arc dodging. Fettigator may not be a good arc dodger but he is very good at getting ships in arc.

If I were doing this, I'd probably go with something like this:

I am in the lead of a local tournament with a boba, vi, gunner, eu featured list. It eats phantoms and I haven't lost Boba even once.

But... In my last 10 games I have only used his ability once. I always question the Fettigator idea since, at least in my games, there aren't a lot of good places to turn to.

So I just ran some tests with the bank templates and a large base.

What Fett's ability effectively does, if you bank, is give you pseudo 360 coverage. He makes Fett almost impossible to arc dodge and get a shot back. Navigator synergies well but as it stands its almost a turret for Fett. And the thing is, even if your opponent doesn't know it's an effective turret consciously he does know that Fett can bank either way, and if he outguesses which way Fett'll go Fett'll just dial flip. So even if you're not triggering the ability, the fact that your opponent knows you can is still working in your favour.

Rec spec goes on my firesprays nearly always but Fett does very well with navigator. If you might face phantoms then I would certainly use Navigator +VI. Fettigator is the rare ship that can outmaneuver a phantom and shoot before it cloaks.

Is Fettigator really all it's cracked up to be? I find that, due to asteroids, you're often committed to a certain course two turns in advance, so Fett's ability itself is rarely useful, I wouldn't have though changing the speed would be that amazing, barely any better than Navigator on any other ship. I haven't tried it often though, I could be very wrong.

So I'd probably go with Recen Specialist, or what's her face who gives you free evade actions maybe? I used her the other day, definitely kept me alive longer than I would have been :) Someone who's done the maths might know if she's worth the points, given the Firespray's hull. Engine Upgrade, of course. No cannon though, waste of the rear arc.

For the rest of the squad, I think I'd take Whisper over a Decimator. Yeah the Decimator has a lot of hull, but you'll be surprised how quickly that goes down, especially when you've only got two attacks per turn. Whisper on the other hand - well, you can't kill what you can't hit. Mind you, Fett is pretty good against her, and you know you're facing him, so maybe not...

Heading out now. Thanks for all the advice. I'm adding outmaneuver for sure. I didn't think it would work off the back arc of the Firespray, but since the back arc counts as a primary for it. It does.

I haven't found it to have much more mobility than Fett already gives himself. On the other hand, Engine Upgrade, though more expensive, makes a clearly noticeable difference.
