I have been using Greenman Designs templates for over a year now and they are affordable and look great. The kickstarter link is here and below are some pics of his new templates. Customization with your name is available too.

I am very pleased with my set from Litko. I compared them to my cardboard set once I got them and they are all spot on. I liked that I was able to get my X-Wing squadron's name on them as well. I know other companies offer personalization as well, but Litko was fast and affordable for me. I got my set of fluorescent green personalized movement templates and my 3 piece fluorescent green range templates all for around $45 shipped.
I know Applied Perspective's are good, and around the same price. I know Team Covenant's are nice, but pricey. Greenman's look nice, but there is just to much going on for a movement tool. I have no personal ties to any of them so I went with who's product I liked the look of more.

The problem with the Kickstarter is when will they actually ship? They do look great, though. They look pretty darn close to the ones I got from Acrylic Hotness. For me, why wait for the other ones when I can get them now....errr....in 4 weeks?

I saw the Kickstarter, and the templates look great, but (a) May is a long way away, and (b) for the price of the full-color printed templates, I can get a set of regular acrylic templates and an extra Scyk fighter at full price.
(Although full-color acrylic asteroids with non-slip backing do sound great...)
Similar to the Greenman ones, I've been drooling over the ones from this German outfit in Bavaria: http://www.miracle-versand.de/, run by Shaadea (I think). I especially like the shield tokens.
I'm going to be in the Netherlands over the summer, so maybe I'll order them at that time - especially if the Greek business continues to help the €uro depreciate against the $dollar. ![]()
But, in all, while I like the acrylic stuff, I find that the cardboard stuff still works just fine for me.

You think that because you don't have a set of acrylic templates. The weight feels better, the snap when you put them down on the table feels better, and you don't have to replace them when one of your friends spills his Two-Hearted IPA on them*.
(*I dried them off right away and they didn't bend or anything, but I couldn't get the smell out.)
Quick question for anyone who's brought the Cog 'O' Two movement templates, do you need to paint in the numbers yourself?

...I'm pretty sure it's "Cog".
Here are some samples of Greenman templates that you can get without waiting for the kickstarter. I love mine (the first set). These can be ordered directly from their website. Standard templates are $18 and for $4 more you can get them personalized. I met him last year at the NOVA Open, and he's a great guy to deal with.

Yeah, my bad. Edited.

So, ignorance is bliss?
Well, I don't live in a vacuum. Most of my opponents have acrylics, and I've fondled them (mostly with permission). So, yes, I completely understand the tactile bliss they offer. But I'm also a Calvinist at heart. I don't need that bliss, and while suffering without those lovely acrylics won't bring salvation, the idea that succumbing to such temptation will prove to me that I'm not elect is quite harrowing.
But, I own four core sets. If a friend christens one of my templates, I have three more standing by to take its place. It's like the Russians in WWI over here.
Major Tom, best of my knowlegde you do have to paint Cog's templates.

Oh, he finally got his website up! Yeah, those are the same ones in Acrylic Hotness thread. I really like mine. Also, I got a bunch of his shield tokens and they are really cool looking. I've got the movement templates and the shield tokens. My friend that I always play against got too jealous and wanted to order some for himself. That was right when he started the new tokens. I ordered some of the special tokens (like the pilot crits) and range 1 and range 2 templates.
These templates are pure awesome and about the same as the kickstarter, but about the same price as the boring monochromatic acrylic ones I see. You just need to wait 4 weeks for the shipping.

Why?
Major Tom, best of my knowlegde you do have to paint Cog's templates.
Why?
On the site it describes the rulers as unpainted. I wouldn't want to buy a set of scum rulers then have to paint in the really nice designs myself (on of the reasons I like X-Wing is I don't have to paint anything due to sucking at painting).

Go to the site....they are supplied unpainted and recommend you paint them.
I went AP myself. The cost and look of them were right. I went matte black (no lines) and painted the numbers in solid white. Paint wasn't a hassle at all because of the peel-aways and I know several people who went with different colors.
They look very sharp on the table. I kind of like how they blend into most mats a bit when you are using them, but are still obvious enough that you don't lose them.
They came quickly and perfect the first time, no issues. Was/am very pleased.

How much was the S&H to NC? I kind of gave up with trying a test-run of the ordering, just a little bit ago, because ... well, of other things I was mentioning... and it was a bit cumbersome and German on that website.
I asked for just the templates when he first came on the forums offering them. We dealt via PM. With shipping, he quoted me $30. An hour or so later, he PMed me back saying that he forgot I don't pay EU VAT, and it should be $25. I said to throw in some tokens instead since I had sent it via Paypal already. I got those awesome shield ones.
Since then, he's gotten an email for his business that he uses. It's in his thread. Wait....info<at>miracle-versand.de

They come unpainted but there is a paper protecting the acrylic. Just apply paint without any care and then remove the protective layer. Good point is you can customize them to the color of your liking... I still chose white because I'm a sad and unoriginal person
... it looks very nice!
Ok, totally dumb question, what sort of paints would be best for this, citadel type water based or humbrol type model aicraft paint?

Not a dumb question at all

Citadel type paints work fine.
As RedCastle says, just water down whichever colour you want and batter it on.
Allow to dry and then remove protective film.
You cant really go wrong.
There may be a bit of seepage under the film in places but you can easily score that off with your thumbnail when its dry.

I used acrylic paint, like citadel. No need to even water it down.
