I am not sure how to use this correctly. I want to use this with Slave 1.

" When you perform a focus action, assign 1 additional focus token to your ship."

In the action phase if I evade, then I do not get this? If I focus, then in combat I use it for defense, I get another token which in turn I can use for offense?

Most of the time with my bad dice rolling I choose evade in the action. So not sure if this is a good idea or not.

If you take the Focus action, you get a second Focus token in addition to the one the Focus action gives. This only triggers from a Focus action, not acquiring a Focus token, and not from any other action. And you get it immediately, not when you spend the original Focus token. The extra token is free to be used anywhere you'd regularly use a Focus token, and is discarded if unused at the end of the round just like normal.

Also note that spending a token is not an action. "When you perform a focus action ..." does not trigger when you spend a focus token.

Yes, it's the Action that triggers Recon Specialist. So anytime you take that Action you get a 2nd focus token.

You need to "perform a focus action ".

The focus action results in you acquiring a focus token. Recon Specialist gives you an additional token for a total of two.

"Action" in X-Wing has a very specific meaning.

Also, any time a card (such as Push the Limit) allows you to take a free action, if you choose to focus, it applies there too.

With regards to this, I'd say two Focus tokens are better than one Evade. An Evade token is a single Evade result, which is great if you need that one guaranteed miss to happen. But a Focus token could be more than one Evade if you roll enough eyeballs. Plus you're getting two of them, so you could use it on your attack, or on two separate defense rolls.

Recon Specialist give you an extra Focus token when you take the Focus ACTION. That action can be taken as the ship's action or may come from someone giving the ship a free action but it needs to be an Action and you can only use a given action once per round.

Now while you may only get to perform a Focus action once per round if you have multiple Recon Specialists on your ship EACH will trigger when you take the Focus Action allowing you to get many Focus tokens. Although it would have a hard time spending them you could put three Recon Specialists on a Decimator and gain four tokens every time you take the Focus Action.
