Any suggestions? Was thinking mephiston red?
Also, what parts are you glossing? Everything but the cape? Or boots, helmet and chest plate only?

Edited by teajay33I just used Testor's Gloss Red for mine, but I'm not into the painting/shading awesomeness like some of you guys.
As for glossing, I did my Vader in flat black and then went over his helmet and chest piece with gloss black. Didn't think about the boots, though.
I went with some thinned red over a base coat of white to brighten the saber up a little bit. As for the gloss, I put some ardcoat on his helmet, shoulder/chest piece, and his boots. I have gotten some good feedback on the result.
For the saber, I'm doing a base of bright white mixed with a hint of silver, then a few coats of red glaze. If it works properly, you get the darker red along the edges and a lighter red in the middle, regardless of what angle you look at it.
I went with a base of white and then use Blood for the Blood God, to give it a shiny red look.
a good idea would be with everyone showing pics of their results so we can see your personal lightsaber effects
Yeah pics would be awesome. Anyone care to share?

Edited by DarthMansonI've replaced it with red fleuro acrylic rod from Hassle Free miniatures...

I'm aware, but no one looks there. I posted my figures a couple days ago and not one reply. Lol
As with all things art, it always helps to look at source material:
Notice that Vader's saber around the edges is an cool red, nearly pink, but with a bit of an orange undertone. The highlight/glowing portion is a nearly white-pink.
I'm not actually working on my minis yet--still recovering from a painting bender I went on in January to get ready for a Warhammer tournament--but I did a quick step-by-step on a piece of plastic rod I had in my drawer:
From left to right, I started with a base that was a mix of Vallejo Game Color Gory Red and P3 Khador Red Base. (About 50/50). From there I added successive amounts of pink and did a fine and finer center line to create the energy intensity. (pics 2-4) Finally, I did a very thin glaze* of the base color to tone down the highlights just a bit. (pic 5)
On the actual model, you'll have to pick a location where to do the highlight. I'd suggest the 'top' of the blade, since most people will be looking down on the model from above. I'd add the same highlight on the opposite side of the blade, and feather it slightly around the edges. From there you can add the Object Source Lighting effect if you want!
*Glaze: Paint thinned to the point where it is very transparent. Adding Glaze Medium is helpful, but not necessary as long as you don't thin it so much that the pigments break down.
danno, you should post that as a separate "tutorial" post in the painting forum, people need to know this stuff!
It's white!
Danno, I like it but then it only looks good from that specific angle
