Hey all, I just finished a game at my local hobby store if you could call it a game. In a nutshell it boiled down to one moment. I had an Evade on a A-Wing and my opponent use a HLC on dash with outrider and only hit one hit. I decided that I wanted to spend the evade token to cancel the without rolling dice, however I was told otherwise. Who was right and who was wrong?
Evade Action
You would still be impelled to roll your evade dice, but you could still spend your token to render them moot, if you wished.
As stated, technically you do have to roll the dice, but if they all come up blank you spend the token. Never heard of anyone in a casual game bothering to insist on the dice roll though. Did he give any reason? Was he misunderstanding done rule?

I take it this turned into a disagreement that turned the game a bit sour? You still have to roll the correct number of dice, but it was never really in doubt as to the outcome.
If the attack rolled zero hits, would you roll the evade dice? That is effectively what has happened. Although in the rules, you received a hit and you should roll defence die, I think it is a completely unnessessary and time wasting action. My group never bothers with it and guess how many problems we have had!?
Hint: It's the same as the number of hits fella's A-Wing took.

Yes you would. Rules are quite clear on that, you have to roll the dice. You of course can ignore that rule if you wish, and as long as no one says anything it's a case of no harm no foul.
But if someone does say something, they have the rules on their side.
It's possible he was curious how he would have done if he had rolled better.
Did he have any other ships that could have shot at you after Dash? Because then you'd most definitely want to roll in case you didn't need to use that Evade token and could save it for a later attack.

Yeah, it did unfortunately. He ended up saying he wasn't playing anymore after that and we both just packed up our stuff and separated.
Did he have any other ships that could have shot at you after Dash?
Yes he did, he was running a Double YT list with Dash and Chewie. and I had an A-Wing, B-Wing and X-Wing that cloud eat stress for breakfast.

I don't remember if he gave a reason or not, but if I had to guess he might be participating the store tournament that is taking place in my town tomorrow.
If he has additional ships with a shot on you, then sure he could get miffed that you decide to spend the evade rather than roll, since it would affect the damage of his follow up shot. This is especially true if he is practising for a tournament and wants the hardest test of his squad.
But to ragequit as a result seems a little excessive on both sides.
And if you are asked to roll even if it fells useless, why refuse such a simple request? Would it not be easyer just to roll and move on than to argue about it?

It sounds to me like there was something else going on in the discussion, perhaps with a misunderstanding over the token itself. If someone pushed for the roll in that situation I'd pick up the dice, drop them, and then declare the token without looking at the dice
I can't see any reason for the scenario described by the OP to get contentious.
Exactly. There doesn't seem to have been a reason for the guy to insist on the roll, there doesn't seem to be a reason why the OP would refuse. So what else was going on?
