Character Foilio and how much is it too much?

By Admiral Terghon, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

First, thanks to all you creative geniuses out there making sheets, maps, deck plans, etc. The amount of cool material really helps the game (at least for me) and certainly makes it look immersively awesome.

So, here's what I have planned for my character folios:

  • Character sheet from Oggdude's character creator.
    a) All info sheets, plus
    b) Talent Trees for all purchased specialties
  • Player Action Sheet from GM Hooly
  • Advantage/Threat Sheet from GM Hooly
  • Starship Player Action Sheet from GM Hooly
  • A portrait and name standup for the table.

Plus of course a "group" folio with:

  • Group sheet from Oggdude's GM Tools
  • Base sheet from Oggdude's GM Tools
  • Starship Dashboard from GM Hooly
  • Starship deck plan and base map(s) from Domingo

Too much? Am I missing anything my player's might need?

note paper, pencils etc is usually helpful. but it is a great list, and i agree the fan made kit for this game line is wonderful.

Oooo, Star Wars pencils... There should be plenty of room for character notes on Oggdude's sheets, but yeah, a few pages of regular looseleaf at the back wouldn't hurt, and sure as heck wouldn't make much difference in the price.

I also got some silicone moulds from eBay and made chocolate and ice with them.

there are 7 different available that i know of

I have a page for group and personal.achievements. I also use trophies in it too.

If you have a party supply store nearby, I bet they'd have a section for throwing a Star Wars-themed birthday party. Could find all sorts of goodies (including maybe pencils) there :)

ooh! star wars party at oggdudes house. will there be cookies and ice cream?

Just keep the lightsabers at home. I was cleaning up the wreckage for a week last time :)

Its those Trandoshan gate crashers

scales and fur everywhere

Great, that's all I need... more neighbors complaining to my HOA about those Trandoshan troublemakers. The wookiees can't even use the pool anymore. Something about their fur clogging the filters...

Cautionary Note: looking up "Star Wars Mechanical Pencils" doesn't find any Star Wars mechanical pencils. It does, however, find you many Star Wars pencil sketches... including a rather naughty one of Ahsoka and an astromech.

The ice idea would be awesome, but the game isn't at my house (I lack a good table and adequate seating). Chocolate on the other hand... that's easily doable. And, of course, I have a couple molds already. :)

I have all of the top part except the portrait and stand up. But I add an encounter with my character my R2 and my fighter in it so i have all the die rolls for my starship stuff.

And, of course, don't forget your range band meter for those combats and starship battles :)

Sorry, I'm kind of proud of it :D

When it comes to handouts like this, I don't think there's such a thing as 'too much' and this sounds awesome.

I also try to include some loose-leaf paper for note-taking and map drawing, and post-its for note passing.

Of course you could also give stuff like that on a thumb drive and save a family of trees. =)

Note-passing at our table tends to be by text message. Gets annoying really, but the chances of going to physical notes is practically nil.

I like that, but I don't need one that large. Maybe I'll make up something similar that fits on a single sheet. I've considered possibly printing one out on transparency to sit on top of a map, but it would have to be moved for every character so... maybe not. I'm running this one very much Theatre of the Mind so vague approximations are fine.

We use poker chips (Cheap plastic set found in a department store) to track wounds and strain throughout a session (blue for strain, red for wounds) then jot them down on the sheets at the end.

We also use the white and black to pass around boost and setback dice (Less chance of accidentally mixing up with all the dice on the table in a moment of "Is this the boos you gave or just a random die on the table)

Lastly we use green chips to track the range between different objects in encounters, we find this helps to quickly asses whats on the table and make decisions. It also makes working out how many manoeuvres are required to reach something much quicker.

there is still a large element of narration due to the 3D nature of space battles (something i try to emphasise using terrain)

1 method we have yet to try is putting the chips under our minis to represent elevation, its something i would like to test as it will help remind players that flying straight up or down is an option.

does anyone else use tokens of some variety?

We usually do "theater of the mind" combats, unless its a big fight. I had bought a bunch of Alea Tools round magnetic discs when I ran my D&D campaign, so everyone has printed tokens that will adhere to the discs. For adversaries, I have five or six sets of numbered magnetic discs. What I do is print up a sheet full of 1" square images of the adversaries on cardboard stock, then punch them out with a 1" round puncher. I'll then use non-permanent glue stick to lightly attach them to the numbered discs. When I'm done, I can just take them off and everything is reusable. Large creatures, or ships, use 2" discs.

It's not as fancy as miniatures, but I like them better because I can print up exactly what they're fighting, rather than have to use whatever miniatures I happen to have ("The goblins are Gamorrean thugs, and the gray ooze is Teemo the Hutt") :) For scenes, I'll just draw them out on the mat with colored wet-erase markers. If it's a big planned climactic battle, I might print up scenery, or use my trees that I got at the model railroad store. Rocks from my backyard serve as boulders :) and I have crates and barrels and such from D&D that work great as... well, crates and barrels.

Missed this the first time I saw it. What does your page look like? Anything fancy like GM Hooly is fond of or just a list?
