As pretty as the Death Star looks, I think it might be a bit visually busy for me to actually want to play on.

I think I'm gonna grab 2.
I'd do only one, but a pair let's me run the Raider I'll be getting with my left-over Christmas gift cards.
One other thing I like about neoprene mats... Those "people" that like to shake their dice till certain sides are up then try to just kind of flip them down.... They bounce a lot more on these mats and junk up that tactic.
Dang, I just bought the HCD starfield one a couple of weeks ago after my homemade one finally crapped out.
I might buy these as well depending what MM will charge for them. I'm gonna need something for armada.
Yeah yeah... but do they have this?
FFG has to get on the ball and make a DSII and Endor version...
I was pretty sure that Tile Kit was canceled, because it doesn't belong to tournaments (those lines could help estimate firing arcs). Now, Death Star is pretty, but I'm worried that people would learn measures by heart and use it as advantage. I know that both players are equal with it, but still... Or am I overstating?

I also have that one ![]()

Looks good, but too little too late for me. I already have five 3x3' playmats and one 6x3' playmat from Gale Force 9, Geekchic, and a custom printer.
If I was a new player I'd get these though -- the price is right. I think I prefer vinyl mats, and I'm not crazy about the graphics, but they're OK and will probably be easier to find. (never tried neoprene -- it seems a material better suited for card games than miniature games?)
Yeah yeah... but do they have this?
*head explodes at how busy that mat is*
But really, that is awesome.

Where are the minis?? I'm confused ![]()
Have been using a 3x3.5 black yoga mat with points of white for stars on it. VERY firm and grippy, but heavy to lug around.
That said... SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY!!!
Edited by KnightShiftCool! Though thematically I'm not really interested in the DS mat, and as pretty as the starfield is, I like a little bit of planet/nebulae/color. I have a GF9 Frozen Planet mat I really like, but it is starting to scuff noticeably, so I may consider these eventually, particularly if they broaden the range of available graphics.
I have the HCD star field mat, but when I went to get the original planet one I was told it was not going to be reprinted. Shame. The HCD mat is amazing.
These ones look even better, and for those of us overseas, the fact that we won't have to pay crippling shipping to get ahold of the mats is a nice bonus.
In a way, I'm surprised that FFG decided to get into this side of things (other than for the money of course). The secondary/independent market has produced an awful lot of creativity since the games inception, but this feels like the big man coming in to muscle in on the action and put all the independent component manufacturers out of business (rampant hyperbole based only on one possible future). Currently the system revolves around, does it look cool, now it will be does it look cool, and is it "official". Hoping the same never happens to templates, tokens etc.
The last thing I want to see is every tournament playing on these same two mats, and I'm not sure that is what FFG should want either, since the mats more so than the miniatures are what really draw the eye to the game being played.
That being said, the product looks great. I'll likely get both, just for epic.
Since FFG now has playmat technology, I would buy flat capital ships printed cut-outs for epic and cinematic games. They go on top of the playmats. We have been using homemade ounces. But the artwork isn't great.
When FFG say "soon", they mean soon. Looks like FFG is putting those playmats on the fasttrack. It's currently "In Development" for a release in Q1, 2015.
They're getting done in-house. That means they print on demand here in the US. It means supply will be better and they can put them to market much faster.
The mat I got for £25 serves me well if the ffg one is close in price I could pick one up for epic games 6x3 are a bit pricy.

Same here. Got a Corvette that's 1/270 to scale with the rest of the ships. It doesn't move on the board but it's awful purty to look at.
Excellent idea good sir (lady?)!
They look nice, but skeptical about the mousepad surface. I have played a couple of times on these types of pads and they are super slick. I hope they surface with something grippier. If so, a sale for sure.
Do the surfaces scratch up easily?
The Death Star Assault Playmat looks really nice. But I don't think i'd like to play on it. Not a Fan of lots of big static objects on map, you could easily figure out where your ship would end up. Almost as bad as playing on a hex or grid mat.

It mostly just bugs me that the it's always going to look like the ships are fighting with the bottom of their hulls pointed at the Death Star. With smaller objects and generic space stuff, I don't get that feel.

They're not like the vinyl ones most of us are used to.
Imagine a giant yugioh or magic mat. Or mousepad like others have said.
I like the mat i've got but I'm going to *love* these.
I like that by getting both I can have a choice for standard games and join them for an epic game field.
I don't think the death star will be too busy either. Not like that trench run one was anyway.
Edited by JaggedLittleFel40 bucks is steep though... 30 would be better, and possibly undercut the competition to get them more sales..

I have found the mouse mat material (neoprene) mats to be significantly better than vinyl (slippery and crease easy) or painted wood (slippy). I think they are far and away the best material for game mats, but that's just my opinion. The ones I have played on have a more fabric-like finish, than some of the plastic-type finish mouse pads. I would never go back to anything else.
