I just bought a piece of MDF and some stick down black felt to make a new board to film on and FFG does this to me ![]()
Official FFG X-Wing Playmats!
More than happy with the vinyl starmat I got from Make My Model. FFG are way too late here, plenty of alternatives have filled the gap they left.

Honestly anything has a non-static type element (Ships, Death Stars, etc) aren't my thing. They confuse the board too much. I prefer the empty starscape, or a nebula, or maybe terrain (although I like that less).

My MDF board is painted to look like a starfield. It's pretty, I enjoy it and it will be used for games at home. For games elsewhere, I'll likely pick up the starfield playmat. The playmat will be much more portable.
FFG has to get on the ball and make a DSII and Endor version...
I also have that one
As someone who recently added a second HCD mat to my collection, I can see a third in the near future.
I assume the Starfield version is the same one they used for Worlds. Can anyone who played on them comment on their quality, or whether they think they are the same?
Of course they would announce this one week after I got a 4'x4' space themed game mat from another vendor. Oh well, at least the one I got came with a carrying case and covers a larger area of my gaming table.
Edited by OtakuonIt mostly just bugs me that the it's always going to look like the ships are fighting with the bottom of their hulls pointed at the Death Star. With smaller objects and generic space stuff, I don't get that feel. The Death Star Assault Playmat looks really nice. But I don't think i'd like to play on it. Not a Fan of lots of big static objects on map, you could easily figure out where your ship would end up. Almost as bad as playing on a hex or grid mat.
Glad this is finally a thing from FFG; although, I hope this is not the final product:
Rounded corners will not be good for epic play when you have two mats side-by-side.
I am sure they are going to be released with squared edges.
On a side note, it is nice that they will have an official tournament legal playmat, BUT... all of the Mats most of us bought are NOT going to match in size, the HCD Star Field mat measures at 35 15/16" x 35 5/8".

Its the other reason im making the new one my old red one is to heavy to take from store to store. I like playing on felt more as i find ships dont move as much but they dont look as good as the starfield playmats
That DS2 picture should be released as an epic sized mat.
If anyone wants the DS2 mat in 90x90 you can get the pdf file here:

so if these new mats are the "official" ones does that mean the older mats that we ALL used are no longer going to be tournament legal? also it wouldn't surprise me if the NEW mats are the same size as the HCD ones.. as they have the rounded corners on them too. The HCD ones are also cheaper..of course FFG is listing the retail price. I do like the FFG mats and hope FFG allows 3rd party mats in tournaments as the variety makes it more interesting.the neoprene mouse pad material mats are the best mat material IMHO and i have about 4 or 5 different mats..lol
Edited by SwedgeI cant wait to give one of these bad boys away for a prize at a store event. They also need to release an epic size to show they really support it.
yeah a 3x6 mat with no gaps/joints would be nice..
Yeah yeah... but do they have this?
Wow! Where did you get that map?
Sweet!
I made it ![]()

I wouldn't be so sure that they will be square. The ones used at US Nationals were rounded.
Of course, I'm hoping they aren't like the Nationals ones. They were a little thin and didn't have a sharp edge on the sides. It wasn't a clean line, kind of rounded down and that edge caused a bit of confusion on whether a ship was in or out in one of the later rounds. I was unimpressed with the mat quality there, so hopefully this is better.

They haven't banned third party maneuver templates, even though everyone has official ones in the Core set.

Yeah but they have never made a big deal out of being "official" before. i mean one would assume that if FFG made it, its going to be "Official"..lol why emphasize that point??? but yeah I am guessing they wont go that route as too many folks all ready have mats...
I think "official" is ad speak. "Hey, FFG approves these, don't you want the ones FFG approves, even if they cost a little more?"
ya they are dead.
So I guess the star tiles are really dead then...
What Happened to the X-Wing Starfield Game Tile Kit?
After extensive testing, we have determined that the Starfield Game Tile Kit is no longer the best option for an X-Wing play surface. The X-Wing Playmats will replace the Starfield Game Tile Kit.
would think a double sided mat would be really cool!!
I don't care for that Death Star one at all, but I am interested in the starfield. I much prefer that plain starfield over nebulae; it looks more appropriate to the visual feel of the Star Wars films.
