Can someone please tell me it's possible to buy upgrade cards separate from expansion kits? I was gifted an tie phantom, but it only included the pilot cards, and none of the other.

You need the core/starter set to play the game. There is a shop or two on the internet selling the stuff individualy, but in your situation, it would be best to buy starter set from fantasy or your fav game shop.
