Quite new to the game here. I usually fly 3 awings, all with proton rockets, and a semi-fat Han. When I shoot my PRs, I spend my focus, perform the attack, and my opponents will just instantly roll their evade dice. Usually, I get this smirk from my opponent, after spending my PRs. Little do I know I was doing it wrong. The WHOLE time. One night, I went to my friends house for an x wing game. Once I declared I am going to use my PRs, I spent my focus then performed the attack. He was like: " Why did you spend your focus?" I was like: A focus should be spent to perform the attack, right?" ..."Um, actually, a focus is required to perform the attack but you dont need to spend it to PERFORM it." He explained the differences between a homing missile and an assault missile, a PR and a Protorps. Then I knew. Anyone else made the same mistake?
Has anyone here made the same mistake?
Huh, I've just gone through the rules and your right. You don't need to spend the focus. I thought you spent them too
Your opponents have been frakheads though
Yup, I've been doing that with Ion Pulse Missiles, which don't consume the target lock.
I don't know if my opponents are to blame. They were likely just as oblivious as I was. If yours actually smirked, then that's pretty low.
Were they smirking at the miss or the knowledge you weren't using the focus when you could? if the former-poor form (smirking at misfortune isn't cool-they should be working the other angle (grateful they got away with the shots missing)... if the latter-poor form, boo hiss (winning with tactics like that are a very hollow victory...)
The Team Covenant guys got this wrong for a start too, so you're in good company. With this game it's always worth reading the cards really carefully. And read the FAQ. And ask rules questions on the forum. And then feel like an idiot when you still get things wrong (not that I'm speaking from experience..)
No, plenty of other mistakes but not this one.
Our groups found them awkward to use reliably so like with most missiles it's fallen out of favour.
Wow. I made this mistake too ![]()
I've taken to using the phrase "Do what the card says to do, and don't do what the card doesn't say to do" for this scenario ![]()

Sometimes asking rules questions on these forums is worse then getting the rule wrong.

Three Prototype Pilots with Proton Rockets cost 20x3=60, and Han with no upgrades costs 46. Do you typically play matches at 120 points, or something?
As to the actual thread topic, I didn't make that mistake with Proton Rockets, but I did with Homing Missiles when those were new.
Yes; we (a little group on my gamestore) often try different squad point costs every month. This month, I and a few other guys/girls are trying 120 points. But if ever I wanna play with someone that only brought a 100 point squad, I simply remove an a wing w/ PRs.

Wow...I knew about Proton Rockets and Homing Missiles, but I never noticed that one. Thanks for pointing it out!
*removed for being an idiot*
Edited by nathankcI made and saw tons of similar mistakes. The best way to counter them is to download the FAQ, read it (often) and have it handy on your smartphone if you play with less experienced people. You'd be surprised at how many games could end up far, far different by just being aware of a single detail that just happened to be critical under that specific circumstance ![]()
The first time I ran Prockets I was underwhelmed by them. Then I realised I had made the same mistake as you. Since then I have achieved much better results from my prockets.
Where does it say in the rules that you are required to have a focus token but not spend it?
The "Attack (Focus)" header on Proton Rockets, which the OP was running in his list, is at least a strong implication.
Edited by Vorpal SwordProton Rockets is an Attack:(Focus) missile. You need to have a focus token to use it, but you can save it to modify your dice.
Yep I had it wrong for all examples to, thanks for the enlightenment.
Ahh..see reading is a handy skill. I'm a dope. Thanks!
