Model size to Range ratio

By madtulip, in Star Wars: Armada

From the covenant gencon video i thought that "1 range" was rather small compared to the size of the Victory class base. About the same maybe. And as a Victory class 1 you want to get as close as Range 1 to the enemy to get the black dice in. Compared to other wargames where a 1" large base sniper can shoot 48" far thats quite small. For the actual size of the models its cool that they are larger, but i have the impression that they wanted larger model but just coudnt make that model/range ratio any smaller (-> larger table) because many wargames already use 3`x 6`.

I think about scaling everything apart from the bases up by factor 1.5 or 2.0. Would have to CAD draw and produce or otherwise tinker the move-tool thought... Got a 5x7 table ... which might need to be expanded ... or play on the floor ... ouch :) . But lets see how scale comes out once we have it. Maybe its fine.

your impressions on that?

I like this idea! I've been thinking what I could design with the upcoming Microsoft HoloLense to add to game play :)

oh interresting tool! some stuff to come up before im old :)

you mean you would use the tool to cad draw/scan the move-tool?

depending on how precise it is it could be used to replace the move-tool altogether and outline the location of the base after a certain move without having to shove models away.

i doubt that the device can read its own coordinates in mm or more accurate resolution thought. on the other side if both parties have that problem, why not?

I also worry that the ranges are too short, particularly for those of us who want to try play huge scale engagements.

But I guess the two alternatives are making smaller models (and they do look great as they are) or having a longer ruler, like the unwieldy monstrosity in the x-wing epic scale ships. So I guess FFG think they have found the best possible compromise.

Could always look at doing what x-wing does and having a longer ruler for range 4, and 5 with a red dice discarded at each level, but that would strongly favour ships with more than one red attack dice "cough.. star destroyers" :)

If you wanted to get crazy with this, just make the same rule for each color dice. For example in epic play, a ship with 4 black dice could shoot with 2 of them at range 3, and addition to any playable blue or red dice. I'd keep the ratios on the extended ruler the same though, so since range 2 is shorter do the same for range 4 and 6. Really unsure how well this would balance for lower cost ships though.
