Is it worth getting into X-Wing at this juncture?

By Kevinjt4, in X-Wing

I'm sure it has been mentioned.

I also just got into the game. I really like it. The only other miniature game I played was D&D Miniatures and although fun (and dual purpose) I spent way more money on figures than you need to in this game to be fun.

The games are fun, I like the rules system for movement, and as it has been said before you can get into the game with 2 cores and a set of imperial aces and rebel aces. That is exactly what I did. It works.

Also seeing what I am the game is not on its way out. Some people are just crying that the sky is falling down. I don't think that is the case after watching a couple of tournament reports, and actually going to a local tournament to see what the locals run.

You will have fun, and welcome to the community.

Greetings from Mos Wheatridge!

There is a definitly healthy scene here in Denver, welcome. Currently there are at least10 games a week (within 1 hr radius) here not including store and Con tourneys. Try Adventurers Quarter, Total Escape, Wizards Chest, Tradesmart or Hobbytown.

That's just a short "top o' the noggin" list and not meant to exclude anyone...if you are on FB, join the Colorado X wing group, a great bunch of folks and all the info for local games you will ever need (plus, you will recognize some folks from here too).

MTFBWY and Fly Casual..

X-wing is very solid and an enjoyable experience; I don't regret any of the cash I've spent on it. My one suggestion may be to wait until Armada comes out to see if that's more to your preference or not. I only offer that as you haven't bought heavily into X-wing at this point. Big ship naval fights vs. small ship aerial dogfighting entirely personal preference.

I'm wanting to get into X-Wing (not sure if I'll have the time to dedicate to it with family and all,) but after watching numerous Youtube videos and reading tons of sites about game play and tatics, etc - I seem to be enthralled by the game.

Plus I am in the process of trading in some gaming cards to some websites and if my calculations are correct, may end up with about $500 worth of store credit to put toward the X-Wing miniatures. So in essence there's really no cost out of my pocket to start yet another hobby.

However, recently I have read forum threads here on FFG that some players are getting out of the game due to Phantoms or the up comming S&V faction along with unbalanced game play or a multitude of other reasons.

So my question to you all is should i take the plung or simply move on?

This forum's a fulcrum of complaining and hyperbole. Take everything that's said here with a pinch of salt, at its extreme simply losing to it once is enough to get a ship branded as ruining the game by players around here. Or just being announced can do it too.

Right now there are a couple of ships (or rather a couple of builds for those ships) which are a bit tougher than the others and which are a headache to deal with if you don't know how, but the next batch of releases have stuff in them that'll push them back down.

The internet in general serves as a natural vehicle for angry people to meet other angry people and rant. Before you know it, groupthink has blown the whole thing out of porportion.

On second thought, no. Run away. Run away while you still can. IT'S TOO LATE FOR US, SAVE YOURSELF AND ANY FUTURE CHILDREN YOU MAY HAVE!!!!

I'm finding more people are playing the game then leaving. You will always have those who burn out for whatever reason (can't figure out the movements without landing on rocks, don't like playing with Big Ships but have yet to figure out how to counter them, life takes over and they don't have time or other people to play with ect.)

The game is no where near dying, just ones and twos who have said they are leaving and placed phantom/Han as the reason for leaving. It is really quite silly for them to say such a thing when so many more players are staying and continue to play despite of this meta.

He used to have a picture of his future family right now they are fading away...

I just want to barge in and say, that the OP got some very solid advice from everyone - dip your toes in with a starter set and maybe 2 expansions of your flavour, find out who else plays in your vicinity, play with/against them and borrow some of their ships for the evening, then see where that leaves you ;)

It's a great time to get into the game with a new faction coming out literally in a week or two. I say yes.

Unfortuantly i personally do not know anyone local that plays (I'm in Denver). I have joined a group from MeetUp that plays every Monday however so that is where I would be playing at. There is another LGS that seems to have X-Wing night once a month as well.

I actually already have a Core Set, a Tie Defender, B-Wing and an Z-95 (most still packaged.) I then realized that I could trade in come cards that I have never played with to get store credit.

I will wade in slowly (good suggestion) and see how it goes.

Thanks for the responses people!

I'm in Denver, there are people here who play. I haven't met them at their thing but a friend of mine was talking about it. I played once and was hooked, don't get to play all that often thanks to family and work but I don't regret a single purchase.

Also, don't underestimate the contagiousness of this game - it is quite likely that you will end up as the epicenter of a new local cell. It sure happened to me, we are now 4 regulars in my immediate circle of friends.

Leaving your stuff on the kitchen table because you didn't have time to clean up before possible candidates come around to visit can help spread the fun :D

If you've got time to watch games and demos of youtube, you've got time for a game. Everyone has a friend that's quietly into Star Wars (some won't admit it, but we know they are) and this game is so easy to play, you can get anyone to play. You don't have to be a hard core gamer to play, just an understanding that the Empire has a fight with the Rebels and vice versa.

The introduction of Scum & Villainy is probably aimed at the more seasoned X-wingers, as the Most Wanted pack has add-on components for ships that most new players might not have in their collection. I'd concentrate on Imperials and Rebels at first and leave the Scum for a little later. Some will say go Imperials only, Some will say go Rebels only. I'd say go both and try and build a balanced collection to start with then you can get your friends into it and you've got all the ships for both sides of a fight.

As for the naysayers, they're a very minute minority. X-wing is one of the fastest growing games of it's type on the market. And the number of posts I see here that start with "I'm new to the game..." is just astounding. It will continue to grow, and that ensures game support from FFG for quite some time.

So I'd say it would be a safe bet to take the plunge. I don't think you'll have any trouble finding gaming groups in your city, and I think you'll love the game once you start.

:)

Some day, we'll be upgraded to being a 'wretched hive' of complaining and hyperbole. But we clearly need to work harder at it.

I may be stepping out of bounds as I am not actually from Denver (I'm from Holland..) but I had the great privilege to visit your fine city and roll some dice with the local X-Wing community. Therefore it is with great confidence that I can direct you folks here:

I'll be visiting Denver again on the 22nd of February which is a Sunday so I don't know if there are any places that facilitate play on that day, but would love to get a game or two in if at all possible.

On topic I'd like to add that X-Wing is s great social conduit as well as I've already met people of varying walks of life all over the world and every one of them up until now has embodied the spirit of flying casual.

Internet fora tend to be populated by people with extreme opinions. And people have been complaining about the OP unbeatable lists since wave 1. Not the same lists though, which should tell you something. The difference between what are (arguably) the best lists and lower tier lists is not that great (assuming we exclude the lists where you deliberately try to make it bad). Honestly, it's probably the most fun miniatures game I've ever played. Definitely take the plunge, it's worth it.

Thing is you don't have to be a huge star wars fan to enjoy the game, if they'd made up their own IP it would still be an excellent game, being star wars just makes it even better for your inner eight year old.

Yes, it is totally worth it.

The flightpath game engine is just wonderful and the Star Wars theme icing on the cake. As has been suggested, get 2 starters, play the scenarios and then either resell if you didn't like it, or join the cult of glorious X-Wing of superior design!

Started roughly a year ago and although I didn't get to play much, I had fun every single time I did.

I will preface this by saying I did not read any of the responses thus far...

OMG Yes, X-Wing is an amazing game with an amazing community and we are only getting bigger and strong each and every year.

The game is very well balanced, FFG supports both the competitive and casual players, keeps their eye on the meta and fixes things when they are not right.

I have never played a game with a better community of amazing people and backed by a great support system from the company who makes it.

Yes, without a doubt yes, X-Wing is worth it!

So my question to you all is should i take the plung or simply move on?

Not only yea, but %#@* YEAH! Don't let trolls talk you out of the best game you will ever play. Go pick up a core set (best $30 you'll ever spend) and try it out.

Investigate your local community to see if there is a player base and if so, jump right in... for the Empire! :)

Its worth getting the core and a few other ships. Play around see if it fits. Worst case scenario you have a fun game that collects dust. $100 isn't all that much and would get you started.

The reason I complain about phantoms is I do actually like the game and hope issues of Overpowered or meta breaking defining ships like the phantom get a looked at by FFG.

Still a fun game. So give it a spin. You will have fun. Its cheaper than a lot of other hobbies and going out drinking.

Unfortunately there is a Store Championship in Fort Collins on the 22nd. I know a bunch of us will be up there for it, but maybe you could set up a match through the FB group?

To the OP - there is a lot of good x-wing in Denver - as has been alluded to in this thread. You can check out the Denver thread in the organized play section of this forum, or there is the FB group (which I know nothing of other than its existence). There are several leagues, many more casual play nights, and whenever the tourney kits come out you can be sure that three or four are within driving distance. If you still are having issues finding something, feel free to PM me here, or post in any of the organized play Denver threads and I'm sure jjon (or any of us really) would give you a hand. If you decide to take the plunge and get into this game, then welcome and I hope to play against you soon!

X-wing has replaced 40K as my goto game.

I've played 40k for over 15 years.

I've actually bought custom ships for casual play.

I love this game.

Do missions/campaigns etc rather than tournament, don't be afraid to experiment, if you win with a list change to a different list (unless you do tournament of course).
