The Named Doom Swarm

By ArdusKaine, in X-Wing Squad Lists

I'm a fan of having a large ship and several TIEs accompanying it as a mini-swarm, but want to stray away from Turrets. Bored at work, I came up with this:

Omicron Group Pilot (21)

- Darth Vader (3)

Howlrunner (18)

- Stealth Device (3)

Mauler Mithel (17)

- Expose (4)

Dark Curse (16)

- Stealth Device (3)

Black Squadron Pilot (14)

- Draw Their Fire (1)

Total: 100

Really hoping no one uses Ruthlessness should I decide on this list, but I think it's got plenty of firepower and survivability. Hopefully the TIEs would be able to focus fire a target's shields enough to drop a Vader crit on it from the shuttle for maximum effect. Phantoms shouldn't be too much of an issue unless it's Echo (or if, for some reason, someone takes Whisper without VI) since my PS is low enough to allow me to block if I feel that's more important than disrupting formation.

The only thing I'm unsure about is no EPT on Howlrunner. However, I know she'll most likely be targeted first and I'm not sure how much mileage she'd get out of any. There's certainly plenty of room to throw around modifications, talents, etc. or change them to include a fourth named ship over the BSP.

Any constructive criticism would be welcome.

I also like a big ship with a named tie swarm, but for me I prefer mauler, dark curse, backstabber, and fill in the rest of the points with academies and marksmanship on mauler. Each named tie is at that point a big threat by themselves, and don't require the same proximity that howlie wants. I also like marksmanship over expose on mauler since he usually wants range 1, where I am uncomfortable lowering my defense to trade shots.

I've had this list poking around in my collection - same kind of idea

Hm, I like the shuttle as it is but I'm not sure if I want to vest that many points into it. Typically if I'm running a control shuttle it's something along the lines of:

OGP

Ion Cannon

Tactician

Rebel Captive

so that I have enough points for the TIEs. Gunner on a shuttle is something I'm really hesitant about considering the point cost and, if the shuttle overshoots an enemy, it's a lot of points wasted for quite a few turns.

Nigel -- Expose is something I'm still up-in-the-air about on Mauler. I'm hoping that it'd be a non-issue in maybe the first turn or two since my opponents (in my experience) tend to focus on Howlrunner first. Or it could change their priority to Mauler, thus allowing Howl to give a good re-roll to Dark Curse and the BSP. I've considered dropping a Stealth Device somewhere and adding Squad Leader to Howl to allow Mauler to get both a focus and Expose, but again, it's a tough choice for points.

Take Expose off of Mauler.

You could try PTL on Howl to stack Focus + Evade every round.

Or, maybe, Decoy on Howl? This would let the BSP fire at PS8, and you wouldn't be torn between spending Howl's focus on attack or keeping it for defense since everything PS4+ will have already fired.
