What will the next epic Imperial ship be?
Will FFG create another Imperial Huge Ship?
Good question - Epic has hardly taken off - but then was the lack of an Imperial Epic ship the cause of that?
I couldn't say - I play Epic most weekends and play Imperials more than Rebs (for a change) - but it would be interesting to see how many people have been put off by that as opposed to just a general lack of interest in the format.
Personally I'd like to see a little more emphasis on Epic over the next year or so.
Scum could use a little fleshing out in following waves, but the Rebels and Imperials don't need any more ships for the forseeable - perhaps a tweak or two here and there but that's all.
So there's a great opportunity for FFG to push the Epic format ( no space-bricks though please
)
I'm puzzled about the Gonzanti though - it's been a shoe-in for the role since day 1 - and something with a mini-carrier type of mechanic would be great - so why was it never chosen? not even as the second smaller ship? why did FFG pass on it and go to the trouble of designing their own from scratch?
I get the feeling there's more to the lack of an Epic Gozanti than is immediately apparent

I think it's at least a major factor of why it hasn't. Here's why:
As an Imperial player, the way to fill out a 300 point fleet is multiple copies of the same small and large base ships. Other than in epic, without your own epic ship - you'll most likely never get much use out of all your copies of ships in other game modes. Some people don't mind dropping the money on this, other people have no interest in buying half a dozen expansions of the same ship.
So I don't think it's the actual $40-$90 price tag of epics that deters people much - you'll only ever really buy one of each. FFG intended this with their point system and they even look great as collectibles. The issue has been that on top of your epic purchase you have to buy so much more to have a adequate and varied force to go up against them.
If they want it to become more popular they have to introduce more epic ships. The other major factor has been it's not a great game mode for tournament play. Introducing a new, quicker, format so it can be played in them will help.
Will FFG make more epics? I think so - considering that they have to plan, design, and produce them way a head of time they are probably already in the process of making some more. Also consider there aren't any FFG officials saying that they wouldn't be making any more.

Does anybody have any hard numbers to back this up, or is this just speculation?

It would be epic, of course.

Call it informed speculation lol!
No stock issues with epic ships
While everyone wants to speculate on the next epic ship, not many posts about actual epic play
When people do post about epic play it's often "no-one plays epic"
few rules questions
not a great deal in the way of organised / competitive play
etc etc
Seems very low on the radar in comparison to the standard format

That's certainly what I hope, but there's more to it than people just buying them. What's the marginal cost/benefit of these huge ships compared to small and large-base ships? Obviously, we don't know the answer to that. but if you all want to speculate, it'd be interesting to read what you all will come up with.

You bring up alot of good points...I agree with the issue of the Empire not having an epic as being a huge drag on the format...the biggest one in my opinion.
The bolded part however I am going to have to disagree with rather vehemently. Tournaments are not the be all end all and are hardly a great way to gauge how popular a format is. The rules for tourneys are very restrictive and strict with not much room for variation. Though most people on this forum are tournament focused the vast majority of players, I would contend, are not. The game does not revolve around the tournament circuit. They make take some insight from it...but it isnt the center of the universe here.
The format isnt designed to be picked up and ran in an hour with no prior prep the way the standard 100 pt death match is and I doubt it can be without destroying what makes it fun and unique (the massive points investment.) I am fine with it not being tournament ready...not every mode needs to be played competitively...though if they find a way more power to them.
Glad to see we agree on the need for more epic ships though! I have had a blast every time I have played epic...and the Raider will only add to that.
Maybe it'll be this tasty little pancake....

Seriously FFG, Fractalsponge has it going ON. Give the guy a contract or something. Don't get me wrong, IMHO the Vigil is still his finest work, but this thingie is neat too. I'd buy this model over a Decimator any day, especially since it doesn't have that big stupid dome.
Edited by BenderIsGreatSomehow it looks too much like the MF, but at a much larger scale, considering the turrets, yet the hatches are the same size..? It's weird.

All good points as well! My favorite part about watching epic games is the scale of them and I don't think that they would do away or replace the rules they came up with. It's a fun game mode to play with friends and make a day of it once and awhile.
Competitive play is not the be all, end all, of course. It is certainly a focus for FFG, though. I think epic ships would be more popular if they were more easily adaptable into any game mode - including tournaments. What it boils down to for me is the current design of the format itself - it's limiting logistically and it adds a significant chunk of time to a game's length.
I think they should design a game mode where each team is only adding another 1 or 2 epic ships into the game per side, rather than doubling or tripling the number of overall ships. I sort of touched on it in one of my earlier posts, like a "escort squadron" type game mode.
Maybe we'll see something like that when the Raider finally releases and Scum has it's own. The standard 200+ point epic games have really been the only way to play epic games aside from custom scenarios up to this point. But regardless, yes, I'm glad we can agree that more epic ships would be a good thing! ![]()

I think a requirement to have at least 40% or so of your points be an actual epic ship would help speed up the format as well. Once the raider is out, that will be a much more viable requirement. Although, now that we have scum, it kinda gets us back into the 'but one faction doesn't have an epic ship' complaint.

Require every side to start with a minimum of 2 epic points, and let each IG-88 count as 1/2 of an epic point.
Gentlemen are you sick of pesky rebels and pirate ships buzzing around with all their shields, turrets and illegal technology? Tired of having to write notification of death letters to the families of dead imperial pilots? Tired of waiting for a solution to the question of what imperial huge ship will be next? Wait no longer behold the H-k Probot! A 150m tall ship devouring machine!
That's just crazy.
Taking a lil probot and blowing him up to giant size is just lazy, unimaginative design, and we shouldn't tolerate it. You might as well have the Rebel version be a giant R2-D2 with turbolasers.
and yet some people on here get all moist when someone mentions the XG-1 Assault Gunboat - which is little more than a scaled down Lambda
Not me, I hate that design, too. It needs to go away, along with the Space Dong ships and the K-wing.
I'm truly afraid to ask what a Space Dong is

Behold the might of.... SPAAAAAAACCCE DOOOOOONGG!
Luckily, FFG got the message and instead made the Raider, which is does the same thing (anti-fighter) but is better in every possible way, including not being an enormous grey wiener anyone in their right mind would be embarrassed to own.

I know its been suggested before but I'm thinking the IPV-1 might make a good Imperial epic its kinda round like the rebel transport. I don't mean the terribly rendered one from the old x-wing games.

At 120m it doesn't suffer from Gozanti's problematic scaling issues, was used to hunt smugglers and where the larger imperial ships were unavailable.
