Funny thing about IG-88 A

By GroggyGolem, in X-Wing

I don't suppose IG-88A would get two shields for blowing up the defender and maybe another ship with say Ruthlessness. Too bad his card doesn't read: "When attacking you may recover 1 shield for each enemy ship destroyed."

Imperial only ;)

I would have liked it if Iggy A could boost his shields above his max. But (for now at least) it seems he can't. I obviously haven't flown him, but he seems like the weakest of the 4 by quite some margin.

Yes, your post was properly worded, sorry again. That was my train of thought on the subject and intention was to be humorous. I feel bad now.

Don't feel bad. I took it to mean you were talking about me and not making a joke.

You know, some people are just... And designers, who know such people exist, try to make idiotproof cards. Agility cannot be lower than zero? Oh, really? Do you have a green dice made of antimatter? And then it makes more trouble than benefit (necessary FAQ update "ignore any “to a minimum of 0” restrictions until the calculation is complete"). And "recover" is obviously synonym for perpetum mobile.

I remember old good SWCCG days, when some idiot, who didn't read the rules, moved the Executor to the Death Star Trench. Why not? There is so much place on the table and on the picture, right?

A person who makes something foolproof has underestimated the ingenuity of fools.

I was trying to find something in the FAQ that says you cannot recover shields past your shield value but I didn't find anything.

Turns out that's because it's in the rulebook itself.

Pg.4 section 7: "A ship cannot have more shield tokens than its shield value."

Now, that's in a section about setup and I suppose you could argue that it doesn't apply during gameplay, but the wording is not setup-specific at all.

Kind of a bummer, really. A's ability isn't all that great with the low-ship-count meta.

To be honest I am starting to see quite a few 5 ship Rebel builds coming out. So I wouldn't say that the meta is Big Ship low model count yet. To be honest the only reason why it is so big ship heavy is well lets take a look at the meta shift for wave 4.

Now everyone knows that Wave 4 was dominated by the Fat Han lists that won worlds. But Han was not released in Wave 4 it was already out a full wave before. So what changed?

Well wave 4 released a ship with an entirely different feature. Cloaking and Decloaking, the Tie Phantom. The decloaking feature allowed it to re-position the ship before the maneuver giving the ship the ability to attack from anywhere as if it were invisible. The cloaking mechanics gave it a defensive mode where it had 0 attack but an agility of 4 (the highest agility) and an attack mode where it only had modest agility of 2 but its firepower is the highest of all the ships at 4. So if used correctly it is a 4 attack 4 agility ship that can reposition out of arc and attack.

At first the Phantoms dominated the board after the Imadar Alpha Event. If someone won a Phantom they got to wipe the table. Once Wave 4 was fully released everyone had a phantom. So now everyone was tired of getting hit by those little things. So people tried different stuff. Proton bombs to get through the shield, Rebel captive to stress out the attacking phantom so it can't use ACD. Surrounding the phantom with a swarm so it can't decloak. Sooner people realize that the turreted ship the millennium falcon was good because it didn't matter if the phantom was out of arc or not. If the Falcon was in range of the phantom the phantom was in range of the falcon. And Han can beat Whisper at Pilot Skill so he can shoot before the ACD kicks in as well as easily eat up a 5 attack dice shot or 2 and still remain on the board. The Phantom cannot take what it can dish.

So that is how the meta shifts. Take a look at Wave 5 it has been released a few months ago and people are starting to learn how to beat turrets. You are starting to see some 5 ship rebel builds, maybe a hybrid Decimator/phantom build but it is starting to shift from the new ships to a more solid builds that can take on the top meta tier lists. The only reason why Super Dash was around because he was new and he was a turret ship that can beat the Tie Swarm (It actually had Fat Han's weakness for a strength) but likewise fell to highly maneuverable ships like phantoms (so in actuality a reverse Fat Han). There are others trying the area control of the Decimator with the super mobility of Whisper and are not enjoying the success that Whisper had in the 4th wave meta because the Decimator is essentially competing with Whisper on points in the build where in the past the build was focused on the Phantom before the escorts.

So the model count may be low for now but don't expect it to stay that way. Wave 6 is around the corner (or at least one of these corners up ahead) and I don't think double IG-2000 will be a dominating list for S&V.
