GM with a bit of writers block

By PhilB2, in Game Masters

I'm in a bit of a tight spot. I have a game coming up on thursday and I have no material due to writers block.

Campaign Details:

I set up a temporary game as a distraction from the main year long game I have been running. I decided to take the area around ISO Techs base on Raxis Prime (from Beyond the Rim) and build a sand box for the players to have fun in for a few weeks worth of gaming. They are playing Jawa's and its meant to be a combatless game. They have found 1 of the 4 towns in the world.

The current situation:

I have 3 players and due to various circumstances we have not played in a month or so. I really want to have this weeks game and found out one player is sick and may not make it. So, im stuck with not progressing the plotline and need a side mission for the remaining two. I have a Thief/Mechanic and an Entrepenuer as the remaining two.

What I need:

Some type of quick distraction for the 2 players that will keep them busy for a couple hours.

ogo published. I highly recommend beyond the outer rim.

how about one lg them is arrested and the others must prove his innocence.

The thief/mechanic finds/steals a bit of tech that the owner didn't recognize as valuable/care about the value - but the PCs do. they have no use for the device itself but realize that it could be sold for a huge profit, if you can get past the local warlords, banditos, and the original owner who finds out as word gets back to him about a pair of jawas trying to sell something that belonged to him.

All good ideas above. How about, they find a pair of droids wandering in the desert, capture them, then sell them. What could go wrong? :)

They may be captured by thugs/pirates and have to find away to escape. That will keep them occupied, and be a lot of fun for them and the game master.

Raxis prime is very unstable, they slip and fall into the deep back of a crashed separatist frigate. From there they have to work their way back to the surface through the maze-like passages - but what about the long forgotten droids that have made a life down there,do they know a way?

The two remaining Jawas find a derelict ship in among the junk. To most people the ship looks unsalvageable, but these Jawas have the benefit of having been around Raxus Prime for a while now. They swear they have seen the parts required to get the old bird flying again. You can even make them roll an average difficulty mechanics checks with boost dice added for any that have the Utini talent and for the fact that they have been scavenging around the area a fair bit. If you don't think they'd succeed the check, just play it out narratively.

The parts they need can be any number, based on how long a game you want to have (mine are 12 hours long, so I tend to flesh everything out a bit).

One of the parts can be with one of the local Raxus Jawa tribes and will require social checks to obtain, via either a swap, or having your entrepreneur Jawa make a business deal of some kind.

The other could be at ISO Tech's headquarters. If your game is like the one my players went through and they got everyone killed, then have the parts behind some security device or droids protecting it. Otherwise they could simply try and steal it from under the noses of the base occupants. Thus giving your thief something to do.

Other parts could be in the hands of local thugs - perhaps make these explosive or expensive so the thugs don't dare shoot at the Jawas and you get a chase on foot to keep things interesting. A series of competitve athletics and coordination checks will do the trick, with boosts and setbacks for terrain knowledge and the rubbish of Raxus prime shifting under foot. If the thugs look like they will capture the Jawas then you can either let them and see how things pan out, or have other Jawa clans take umbrage at these guys pestering fellow Jawas and do something about it.

Putting the ship back together will take some time (conveniently about the same time needed for your other players to return) and by the time they do, they will have a ship that may be able to just stay flying in atmosphere, or even give them options to take to the space lanes and take their scavenging ways out to the stars.

I think I got it. Thanks for the ideas. Definatly got the ideas flowing.

"arrested and the others must prove his innocence" Will use this when everyone is there. Should be entertaining for me.

"How about, they find a pair of droids wandering in the desert, capture them, then sell them. What could go wrong?" Actually, the game is designed around this idea. They have to scavange for equipment and vehicles for cash. Eventually they will find that the money flow is gone because ISO Techs base goes away so they will have to leave the planet.

"They may be captured by thugs/pirates and have to find away to escape" May have to figure out how to work that into the game. It fits with the Beyond the Rim theme well.

"The two remaining Jawas find a derelict ship in among the junk." Thats pretty close to what I have planned for the end point. With the money flow dried up they find they need to leave the planet like everyone else.

"Raxis prime is very unstable, they slip and fall into the deep back of a crashed separatist frigate." We have a winner.

After some sleep, I think the best way to go is use an Elder Scrolls trick. Have a jawa running around town trying to get help and run up to the group. They find out that the persons loved one is been missing for a couple days after going to a large ship to salvage some equipment. They go and are met with a really scary ship that has a lot of animal and monster noises coming from various side rooms. Eventually the get to the engine room where the Jawa is stuck under a piece of equipment that shifted and have to free him. Return to town, much rejoicing...

I always like flashback adventures when half of the party can't make it. Just do it up Clone Wars style, throw back to an old occurrence.

jawas roll into a brothel and have no idea what the place is about.

Excellent, incredible, invaluable resource for the GM who needs a little creative nudge. Which, I think, is all of us at one time or another :)
