Ranking every upgrade in the game

By category, in X-Wing

You forgot Ruthlessness. I'd say its tier 3 for now.

I disagree with R2-F2. Its too expensive and takes an action. Really only useful on Biggs and you have to stack him with focus to make it worth it. Usually isn't. Tier 4 at least, I'd even go Tier 5.

Same with Blaster Turret, but may be Tier 3 with the BTL upgrade.

Daredevil really has two homes, Tycho and Ociunn (and you really need EU). So I'd say Tier 4. It would be more used if it didn't have such a huge penalty.

Flight Instructor should be Tier 5, not because the upgrade isn't all that useful, but because its 4 points! That puts it into premium upgrade status. If it was 2 points, yeah I'd say Tier 4 is ok. I've never, ever, seen anyone run it, even pre-wave 4 with all the swarms. Now in the high PS meta its even more useless.

But other than those I think your list is pretty good.

Thanks for pointing out Ruthlesness...that made me realize I also forgot Dauntless...will add both of those later.

After some thought, I had moved Daredevil to Tier four, but must have used an older version of this list when I copied things over...I'll update that later as well.

I feel as if Flight instructor has a place, just not right now...it's not terrible if there are lots of PS1-2 ships around and you want to use a large ship. In my mind, Tier 5 is for cards that should never be used, no matter what your opponent is flying.

FI is terrible for 4 points. There are so many other defensive upgrades that are better for the points on a ship that can take crew. Isard, Chewie, C3PO, R2-D2, Recon Specialist, etc. Hell even an EU is a better defensive upgrade on turreted ships.

This won't work because everyone's going to disagree with you and each other.

Which to me, implies most of the upgrades are okay, and even those that aren't widely have their place (Expose and Marksmanship.)

Here are my disagreements:

VI as tier one. I'd bump this down at least a rank. Phantoms are the only reason to take VI.

C-3P0 as tier two: You define tier one as the meta-definers; C3-P0 is the reason the fat Falcon lists are so popular. 3P0 is equally effective on B-wings. If VI is worth tier one, so is this annoying droid.

B-wing/E2: There's a bit more practicality here than meets the eye. On Nera, a RecSpec and Deadeye makes for the perfect situational torpedo platform. Not necessarily a must-have on most B-wings, but Crew slots are some of the best in the game, especially for Rebels. Again, C-3P0.

Autoblaster: you must personally despise this thing. Yes, it's expensive. But how often are you within range 1 with a cannon ship? B-wings with their 2-koiogran, Defenders with the white 4. All it takes is some clever piloting and you can make use out of it. Just don't put it on an Outrider.

Marksmanship: definitely doesn't deserve to be in tier four. This is great for Corran, since it applies to both shots. Ten numb loves this thing until Mangler Cannon is released, and even then, it'll work well with HLC. Kath can appreciate it, if the enemy is packing lots of greens.

A good write up and by and large your points make sense. Cheers for the effort. As is customary I offer one challenge, I think Weapons Engineer is pretty good with a boosting Decimator, Giving you the action you want and boosting without the penalty of stress. Not amazing and could be a point cheaper but maybe level up. If The Mercenary Co-Pilot was a point I like this combo plus Yasune on the Rear Admiral.

An EPT that's only worth taking on a couple of pilots that have abilities with synergy seems like exactly the sort of upgrade that should be hanging out in tier 4. Especially when it's not even the go to EPT for those pilots or those pilots don't make it to the table very often.

Cool to see the data from my site being used to support discussion about the game. Let me know if there's any info missing you'd like to see included for future analyses :)

I think it's a fantastic resource. In particular, it's made me aware of lots of builds and combinations that I otherwise wouldn't have been aware of. When making this list, it was also interesting to see how certain upgrades have been more or less popular than I might have thought - in particular, Advanced Sensors being used much less than I had thought, and Engine upgrade much more.

I also really like some of the updates you've made lately - being able to do rankings based on certain numbers of days in the past, and adding an upgrade ranking (which, of course, was invaluable for this list).

The one feature I've thought of recently which would be neat to see would be links from each tournament page to people's reports about that tournament, if any are available. That way, say if I click on a particular tournament and see that an interesting build won (say, 6 A-wings), it would be neat if there was a link right there to a report someone has written about that tournament so I could see how they did with that build and/or how it was playing against that build.

Nicely done! With so many items on the list, not everybody will agree on every detail. With me, it is Assault Missiles, which I think are treated too harshly. Forcing your opponent to spread out can be quite a boon.

But this will be valuable for newcomers, especially as you have taken great care to give reasons for your judgment.

I disagree with you on Autoblasters, i'm planning on using it with my Dual IG-2000 build along with Accuracy Corrector.

If you manage to get your ship at range1 you will get 2-3 hits regardless of how much agility the ship got which is Phantom destroyer.

If a Phantom player lets you get range 1 of them when you have autoblasters equipped then they deserve to lose.
