Ruthless Rexlar

By icewolf200, in X-Wing

Looking over the Ruthlessness card and Rexlar and I was wondering if Rexlar's ability would effect the damage taken from Ruthlessness.

Rexlar

After you perform an attack that deals at least 1 Damage card to the defender, you may spend a focus token to flip those cards faceup.

Ruthlessness

After you perform an attack that hits, you must choose 1 other ship at Range 1 of the defender (other than yourself). That ship suffers 1 Damage.

No, because those other ships aren't "Hit" by an attack, those ships suffer damage. It's just like if Rexlar fired an assault missile.

That is what I was thinking but I wanted to make sure. Thanks

Rexler Brath's ability works on damage cards dealt to the defender. Damage dealt by Ruthlessness is not affected.

No. Rexlar's ability specifies the cards dealt to the Defender.

Rexlar's best EPT probably remains Predator. The reroll allows him to save his focus token for the actual card flip.

As it is written yes but I am usually on the wrong side of errata.

The Rexlar ability states "to the Defender" and then Ruthlessness modifies that to add one more defender. Then all cards are flipped face up.

Nothing modifies the part about spending a token to flip the cards face up so it still applies to all damage cards.

Now, rules lawyers ATTACK!!!

Hmmm, my logic-fu appears to be weak...

A ship is only the defender if they get to to through the defense phase and do whatever they can to avoid damage (roll green dice, spend tokens on defense, etc). Ruthlessness does not allow the second ship to have a chance to avoid the damage, therefore they are not defending.

The difference is dealing damage vs suffering damage. Ruthlessness uses the suffer damage text so Rexlar's ability wouldn't trigger.

Also it's not one more defender. It's one other ship at range 1 of the defender.

I'm afraid so. :P

Just to flesh this out a bit, the requirement isn't to hit all ships (for Ruthlessness), but for AN attack to hit.

Also, on a side note, Rexler just needs to deal at least one damage but Ruthlessness requires an attack to hit. So Rexler's ability works with, say, a mine but Ruthlessness wouldn't?

Regarding the assault missile, is it because of the phrase "flip those cards face up" that the only cards flipped face up are the ones the target of the attack takes?

Again, just to flesh this out, Rexlers ability only requires 1 damage be dealt so it would seem that suffering a damage is a damage dealt even those it is not damage from a hit...

Rexler's ability doesn't work with mines or bombs (or, rather, it wouldn't work even if he could take them). His ability requires that you hit with an attack, and mines and bombs are not attacks.

And yes, "those cards" is the problem phrase, because the antecedent of "those" is the "one or more damage cards" dealt to the defender. There's only one defender for any given attack, so the ability only works against a single ship each turn.

To me, you choose another ship that is not the defender for Ruthlessness so therefore, the other ship is not a defender so Rexlar's ability wouldn't work on the 2nd ship.

Yeah I want to say no it wouldn't work but who knows how ffg would rule.

This interaction isn't ambiguous at all: one ship, and exactly one ship, is the defender against a particular attack. Brath's ability works against the defender. There's nothing for FFG to rule on...
