Man It's Been A While!

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

I haven't been to this forum in ages, and I haven't played X-Wing in about as long. But I think I'll be getting back into it soon. And wow, look at that! Imperial Epic ship! That thing looks so awesome and what do you know? We're getting a fix for the TIE Advanced! I'm excited to look around for all the cool new toys they've been working on while I was away.

Now if you'll excuse me, I've got some Defenders to dust off.

Welcome back!

Haaaaaaa, I remember you! Good to see familiar… er, faces?

Did you visit the Mars base or what?

No. the scene kinda dried up at my FLGS. I'd get off work, get all cleaned up, rush over there, then wait for an hour or two for anyone to show, if they showed up at all. And when they did, it was almost always the same person over and over, a player who just wasn't nearly a match for me. Gas money, snacks money, time spent, no fun after all that. It became an unnecessary drain on multiple resources. So I stopped going, and stopped playing. It's a shame too, because I hadn't actually gotten tired of playing X-Wing. If anything, I got tired of NOT playing! Plus, I hate to say this, the local game store owner wasn't really good about promoting the scene either. He'd host tourneys, but not tell us they were coming up, then get irritated at us (me in particular) when we didn't show. Don't know about you, but I don't go to a place to get lectured by some guy I don't really know.

I don't think I'll be going anywhere for awhile

Your story is applicable to a lot of people I think. I have a rat-hole-FLGS in an old stripe mall in my area and I have not been there in years. The FLGS has been dead since the 90's unless you are in a huge city.

That is one of the main reasons I do G+ hangout & solo play.

:)

I kind of feel your pain

I tried all summer to get a group going at our lgs.

He got one summer kit in. Our summer tournament was three people lol. Sad I know.

We left him the poster to put up in his window.

He never did

More people were getting into it, but the designated night would have others there playing magic or some other game

And every other night was a magic night Anyway.

I told him bout new tournament kits as soon as was announced told him I'd even cover the cost and wanted to hold another tournament. Give more notice

The summer tournament he wanted to have it in two weeks time

He told me he had everything on order.

So I wanted to get other kits in and know more would come but due to people work and short notice for last one hardly anyone was there.

Finally I heard people were getting winter kits in, so I called and he said he couldn't get a kit until spring.

Haven't been back since.

The store owner didn't help or have any care if it took off. He was just happy to sell minis. But he has magic tournaments almost weekly and etc.

So anyway I found a new store

Within two weeks I've had more people show up then I ever had at other store

Out first tournament had 8 players, and seems to be a much stronger community.

It also helps the store owner loves xwing

Unlike the other store

If it ain't magic he doesn't care

I understand mtg is a huge source of revenue for these guys, but when others are spending a lot of money at your store and trying to organize a community there, a little support would be nice.

I mean i mentioned to him a few times to put the poster up in his window. Oh ya for sure he'd say. I mean it takes two seconds.

Also mentioned the tournament kits many times and was assured he get them in

Anyway my rant is over

Glad I have this née store

I like the atmosphere there better anyway

Defenders still aren't that good...

Oh you, you're adorable.

Wait, do people still argue about Defenders around here or have they moved on to other things?

Also, Wave 5 has hit shelves already right?

And I don't like Vassels or any of the online modes. That's not all of what the game is about to me. I like having friends nearby, a table, the feel of the minis and the precision in moving them myself. You know, full tactile experience.

And truthfully, I can't blame everything on the store owner. He did try to get new kits in, but FFG was always out of them. Also, Wiz Kids is infinitely more supportive of their Attack Wing game, a lot of people play that at the local store and it was just much easier for the owner to focus his time and effort on pleasing them. There were about twice as many attack wingers as x-wingers, because of that support. And also there was a good amount of crossover, but because of the people involved, AW night and X-W night were the same night. So that didn't help.

Ya people still debate about defender, but haven't heard anything recently about it. Think the release if scum soon has taken priority.

Wave 5 has been out for awhile now, and people speculate wave 6 will likely be this month

I understand how you feel about vassal.

I to prefer to play with my minis and friends.

But in my area there really isn't a whole lot playing until recently

I was always playing against the same two friends, after 4-5 games I'm still wanting to play more and they get tired and stop

I also like to play tournaments and again playing against the same two will not help improve. You can only be as good as those you play against is what I say.

Though we play alot, sometimes 10 times and more a week at some points, it is nice to find new players.

My wife just had a second baby, so now it's harder for me to get out to our lgs and again vassal is nice as I can at least play when the kids are all sleeping and I can still be here if she needs help.

And yes it's far from perfect, but again I can't argue the fact that I get to play a game which I love. The convenience highly outweighs the bugs and clunkyness of vassal.

Since playing on vassal I've come across a lot of builds I normally wouldn't when playing my friends

I'm truly grateful for the work and support people such as muon have put into it

Well my friend (who i actually met and made friends with thanks to X-Wing) is going into the Air Force soon. The other day he had an open house party for people to see him before he goes to Basic. He worked at the LGS, and the owner stopped in to see him. I talked with the owner a bit and he said that apparently, the X-Wing didn't die while I was gone, and that people still come up on Monday nights to play. So some of us may find our way up there again in coming weeks to see who still plays and what may have changed. I look forward to it.

Hey, a naked Delta Squadron Pilot is a great addition to many squads, my favorite being howl + 4 academies with delta

What jojo clearly means is he personally sucks at using the defender, don't be angry with him instead pity him the fun he's missing out on.

Also OP welcome back.
