Best teaching lists - challenge!

By Hedgehogmech, in X-Wing Squad Lists

Another topic posted here has prompted an interesting challenge.

When demonstrating X-Wing to others, I think it's a great idea to fly the basic ships in the game so people get a good feel for how they handle and what they're capable of.

For the Rebels that's the X-, Y-, A- and B-Wing, while for the Imperials it's the TIE Fighter, Bomber, Interceptor and Advanced.

So here's the challenge - what are the best lists you can make that feature at least one of each of these four ships?

Additional kudos if it demonstrates additional aspects of the game (e.g. stress, ion, etc), or only uses cards that come with those ships themselves (a new player is more likely to have these). That said, don't feel you have to limit yourself to these suggestions...

Ready your pilots, flight Leader!

4 lists of 50 pts each, 2 per faction.

Alliance:

Gold Squadron Pilot — Y-Wing 18
Ion Cannon Turret 5

Red Squadron Pilot — X-Wing 23
Flechette Torpedoes 2
R2-D6 1
Deadeye 1
-----

Green Squadron Pilot — A-Wing 19
Expose 4
Chardaan Refit -2
Push the Limit 3
A-Wing Test Pilot 0

Blue Squadron Pilot — B-Wing 22
Weapons Engineer 3
B-Wing/E2 1

Empire:

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16
Flechette Torpedoes 2
Ion Pulse Missiles 3
Munitions Failsafe 1

Black Squadron Pilot — TIE Fighter 14
Squad Leader 2

Academy Pilot — TIE Fighter 12
-----

Saber Squadron Pilot — TIE Interceptor 21
Push the Limit 3

Tetran Cowall — TIE Interceptor 24
Stay On Target 2

-----

With x4 50pts lists you can teach 4 players to play if you're moderating or 3 if you're playing + teaching.

The lists off different strategies for the players to think about. And if I'm recalling you can put the above lists together fairly easily. All you need is Starter, Both Aces packs, and a Y-Wing. (yes SoT and Nav come from the YT-2400 and Lambda, but Large Bases are stage 2 anyways right?)

Edit: err forgot I listed Expose, R2-D6, Deadeye, and Flechettes which comes in other expansions that I didn't list. Which can easily be subbed for something within the listed such as Proton Torpedoes or Opportunist.

Rebels:

Luke Skywalker with R2-D2

Gold Squadron Pilot with Ion turret

Blue Squadron Pilot

Gemmer Sojan with A-Wing test pilot, Push the Limit, Chardaan refit

Vader with Protoon Rockets, determination

Schimitar Squadron Pilot with Seismic charges

Tetran Cowell with Adrenaline Rush

Academy Pilot X2

needed purchases:

Core set

Y-Wing

Tie Advanced

Tie Bomber

Both Aces

That's 6 expansions

Each side has 1 unique pilot from the movies to give the game a more heavy Star Wars feel, one obscure EU pilot for a touch of flavour, and a few generics for simplicity.

Upgrades are kept basic and relatively true to the lore

Introduces stress, Ion, bombs and Missiles

I really like this a lot - having two separate 50-pointers is even better for this. There's also a nice symmetry in the Red/Green/Blue/Gold, and people don't have to worry about pilot abilities, only upgrades.

Empire:

Scimitar Squadron Pilot — TIE Bomber 16

Flechette Torpedoes 2

Ion Pulse Missiles 3

Munitions Failsafe 1

Squad Leader 2

Tetran Cowall — TIE Interceptor 24

Stay On Target 2

Also very cool, especially the two TIE fighters - these will give a budding Imperial player a good taste of squadron manoeuvring. Is the intention to use Squad Leader to give the Bomber a TL/Focus combo for the ordnance?

If someone wants to try out an Advanced then one of the Interceptors can be swapped out.

Having 50pt modules makes the game possibly quicker since if you're only teaching 1 person you can fly 50 vs 50 rather than 100 vs 100.

Another "swap" option is the Red Squadron Pilot for Hobbie + R3-A2 the trade off is the Rebels loose their "one shot only" learning device. But it gives them a named character to learn Pilot Abilities from if they're adamant on not flying for the Empire.

Although the Red for Hobbie swap may be better for 2vs2's as He would be the antithesis to Tetran.

A couple of good lists that pair up very nicely - Luke vs Darth is a classic match up that'll give new players a real taste of the Star Wars universe. There's also a lot for people to learn - I'll have to give this match-up a try to see how they play against each other.
