Assault Frigate Mark I

By dpb1298, in Star Wars: Armada

Anyone else notice the Assault Frigate mark I in the Holo of the Adar Tallon card? It is in the far left side towards to top. We all know how much FFG likes to tease the next waves ships in the cards for the prior wave. What do y'all think? Will see the Assault Frigate Mark I in wave 2? So far we have seen in the cards for wave 1 the Imperial Class Star Destroyer and the Assult Frigate Mark I. Let me know if I missed any.

Here's the card for reference:

Thats definitely a Mk-1, specifically the variant with the dual forward superstructure "vanes":

Great eyes! That does tend to suggest it might be. As you say, FFG have often spoilered future wave ships in this way.

This would make a great Wave 2 ship, opposite the Dreadnought. It would reverse the current ship trends....this would have shorter range, more powerful weapons than the Dreadnought, something the Rebels are currently lacking.

Thanks for putting the card picture up! My computer would not let me for some reason. The cool thing about this ship is it is an almost completely different design than the Mark II and has a very different role.

I could see it as a wave 3 or 4 ship but IMO there's just not enough difference between the capabilities of an Assault Frigate Mark I and an an Assault Frigate Mark II to justify releasing them in back to back waves.

I think that is debatable. Mark I is likely to be a cheaper version of the Mark II with comparable numbers of dice but less red more blue or black. I can easily see the Mark I being the Rebel's mid priced brawlers with one variant. Imagine if the Mark I price was between oh 55 and 70 points putting it squarely between the neb and the mark II.

Tbh I was really surprised that the Mark I wasn't in wave 1 over the Mark II. Anyway I'm certain we will see this ship sooner or later.

I was surprised that they used the Mark I over the Mark II in the first wave as well though I was even more shocked that neither the Mark I or Mark II was in the AOR Core.

Especially given the Mark 2 looks like crap. I almost refused to pre - order it just based on looks. I predict poor long term sales on that unit once other options come out.

They probably came out with the MKII first so people who are not Star Wars Armchair Generals like us would not get confused between it and the Nebula-B.

Also I hope they come out with the 1 fin version I think it looks way cooler than the 2 fin.

I thought this at first, but the Mark II is growing on me... I think I saw it mentioned some where but from the front the AF II looks somewhat like an orca, which can be pretty nasty critters.

The original one fin design with obvious relation to the dreadnaught will always be the first image that jumps to mind when I hear Assault Frigate.

The one good thing I will say about the Mark II is that it does take visual cues from the Mon Cal designs, which helps it stand out as a very Rebel design.

Still, I hope they give us a mono-fin Mark I within the first few waves.

To me, the MK II looks like the bridge of an extremely large ship just lopped off and flying around on its own.

My God, a thousand times this and forevermore.

Yes. You can clearly see that the aft sections are vastly different.

You mean apart from an Assault Frigate being over twice the size?

The Assault frigate at 700m long is basically a refitted dreadnaught.

The Nebulon B-2 is a variation of the Nebulon B frigate, at only 250 meters long.

As the Rebel Alliance began to acquire Galactic Republic -era Rendili StarDrive Dreadnaught -class starships , it found the required 16,000-being crew to be difficult to manage and procure, yet they were in desperate need of warships .

After equipping Dreadnaught s with droids and automated systems to reduce the crew requirement to 5,000 beings, thus rendering the ships usable, Rebel engineers began modifying Dreadnaught s to allow for greater speed and efficiency while retaining the original weapon systems. The final product was only recognizable as a descendant of the Dreadnaught -class by the nose of the ship. Most of the internal structure was exposed to space and two dorsal fins provided added maneuverability.

These modifications removed the internal docking capacity of the Dreadnaught -class, but the ships were equipped with 20 umbilical docking fixtures like those on the EF76 Nebulon-B escort frigate . Unlike the Nebulon escort frigate however, these docking fixtures could not carry other ships through hyperspace. [1] In addition, the assault frigate carried a modified assault shuttle on its back, which was secured in a manner that allowed it to be carried in hyperspace .

The assault frigate had a larger number of weapon emplacements than the original Dreadnaught, but the turbolasers had a shorter range and slower fire rate due to the increased demand on the main power system. The removal of large quantities of hull plating reduced the ship's durability, but slightly stronger shields partially compensated for this.

The Assault Frigates generally had one prong at the bow, but variants were equipped with split-bows. [4]

Though it shared a similar profile with its predecessor, the Nebulon-B2 differed in some key ways. The forward pod split into an inverted-V shape which allowed for greater surface area to mount weaponry; furthermore the connecting spar was heavier, rendering it less vulnerable to being split open by heavy fire , and the ship was about 50 meters shorter overall.

Sublight speed was 17% faster, and shield strength and hull durability were both improved. The Nebulon-B2 was also armed with a concussion missile launcher, which was not normally mounted on its predecessor.

Obviously the afts are different.

I just meant they're very similar designs. Hope we see the Nebulon -B2 eventually.

If this game goes the way of X-wing (which I think it will) we will see lots of ships. And if X-wing is anything to go on, seeing a new ship on a card is a pretty good indication that that ship will be coming.

Same here I've always liked the B2. Not sure why its never been included in any non-X-Wing/TIE Fighter sources while the Assassin has appeared in both Saga and FFG's RPG systems.

The classic Assault Frigate Mark I only has a single front fin.

Even though I'm starting to like the MK II, as a fan of Zahn's books which includes the comic adaptions, I would of preferred the MK I.

My favorite design is the one they teased so I am happy. I also like the Assult Friage Mark II because I love Emprie at War. I hope we see from that game the DP-20 Frigate and the MC-30c Frigate.

The twin fin AF mark 1 is more visually interesting, so i would be happier with that one.

I don't count the DP20 as being from that game because its one of the oldest EU designs but I would love to see it in Armada and the MC30C is my favorite ship model introduced in that game.

Can I have a real Dreadnaught before any body-chop-shop versions of it please? ;)
