Be warned slow pokes

By LukesFather, in X-Wing

I once lost a game on points due to someone stalling - a game I was CERTAIN to win if I simply had one more turn. So yeah I feel the frustration. Feel free to vent... but it's ok.

The funny thing would be to stall them right back and have the game end after only 2 moves have been made and no shots fired.

The way the set up went, I may have considered it. Thought of him coming to me, but was like, naw, lets get this started already and had hoped it was just nerves on their part.

I have yet to run into a fortress (thank the force) build, don't know my plan of attack on that. Maybe start considering the Bid at like 90 or something just in case, so when we don't engage, its points on me?

I'm not sure double-stall "games" is what the hobby needs to encourage.

If someone is intentionally stalling, why not play faster yourself making the imbalance even more obvious.

I had a discussion on reddit about a fortress build. It wasn't designed to run the clock so much as it was to pull the enemy in closer, but it falls along the same lines.

On the other hand, slow rolling and making the game last longer through game play (rather than simple taking forever on the dial) seems to be a legit part of the game at big events like Worlds, etc.

Not getting the toilet rage when you have to go you go, you may not need the toilet before the game starts it's not something you have total control over.

Also making someone hold it in can cause very real physical injury internally up to and including a ruptured bladder.

That's an extreme example but people have died from holding it instead of just going to the toilet.

True, but i can see some folks use this as an excuse

Especially if they have only two ships and they do this in a crucial time.

A good TO would take not and allow for an extra round if it was needed.

If you stood at the table for 5 minutes not setting dials, taking an action, or rolling an attack you'd get called for stalling. That you are doing it in the restroom doesn't change that.

I think this is a tough nut to crack.

First, wouldn't you rather beat an opponent who is thinking very hard and trying to win? Or someone who rushes in without considering other options? When people play slow, especially during the first half of the game, they are almost always really and truly just trying to come up with the best strategy to win. Sometimes it does take a bit to decide. And honestly, it makes for a better gaming experience where less simple mistakes are made.

Towards the second half of the game, especially after like a ten minute clock has been called, and your opponent clearly needs to keep his 4 hp ship alive to have any chance of winning, THAT is when you should give small nudges to point out that not a lot of time is left, so don't take too long to decide your dial and actions and what not, since the number of rounds we have left could determine the winner of this match.

And on the other end of the spectrum, if my opponent is reminding me every other round that I should play faster, and I honestly think I am not being given my fair time to decide, (sometimes my opponents move is clearly much easier to decide, ya know?), then I will kindly ask to not be bothered about it so much.

I just think, the whole thing is not cut and dry, and the safest bet is to not be too mean about it and only remind once or twice. You can easily become unsportsmanlike by insisting your opponent speeds up.

I really think the threads on this forum could easily change from:

"I hate slow players"

to

"People are being jerks about taking longer to decide, and it is affecting my game play and attitude in a negative way".

Or

"Based on all the negative forum posts, I am really afraid to pick dials slower than my opponent, and it is actually making me not want to go to a tournament, since the players on the forums all seem too hardcore for me."

Again, just a really tough area to be overly critical in. I always say, my best bet when dealing with strangers is to bite my tongue and always be polite.

That's a good rule to live by in life, even outside of X-Wing. My mother used to recommend I kill people with kindness and that has always been good advice.

It's just a game of toy spaceships, do you really want to make your opponent contemplate a ruptured bladder or staying to place their dials? How would you feel if the tables were turned?

Golden rule always applies people. Let's treat our opponents like a human beings.

Hold on... I have to go pee.

Okay... was that too long?

Omg.... im never going to tell an opponent they cant go pee. If they're in the john for more than 5 mins I will likely let the TO know since thats about the normal length of a round, or even 2 in the late game.
