By FantasyNerd8, in Talisman Rules Questions

Hey guys!

So, I own all of the expansions and the usual way I play is with all of them at once. I know some people say that's too much and it gets confusing but I have never had an issue. Mostly because if there is some confusion, either I have a house rule that solves it or we can discuss and come up with a solution on the spot. But, be that as it may, I was wondering if there are some creative ways that Talisman can be played. Perhaps dividing the cards up a certain way or playing with only a certain expansion, etc. Help me out! Thanks!

Usually I play with everything in order of release. So I start with Reaper, then Reaper and Dungeon, etc. Or if I use Woodland, then I have all expansions that were released up to that point also in play.

But another way is to roll a die for each expansion:

1-3 it's out, use nothing

4-6 it's in, use everything

Then roll a die for your ending type:

1-2 standard (Crown of Command, or Dragon Standard if Dragon uses)

3-4 revealed

5-6 hidden

And finally if you use Dragon Standard ending

1-3 Dragon Realm

4-6 Dragon Tower

I rarely play with adventure cards and spells from more than 1 small box (plus base game of course). That way the theme from the small box really makes an impact on the game. And if your up for a challenge the preferred small box is firelands. That way you'll most likely get an increasing feeling that the game wants you dead. And I rarely use all corners at the same time either. The interactions between characters becomes lacking then.

Edit: I always use game mechanics and other parts of the small box expansions such as quests, quests rewards and the Reaper npc even though the cards from the expansion are unused.
