Really don't like the stretched cockpit version.
Always preferred this depiction:
I find that's the case with a lot of X-wing/TIE fighter/XWA's designs: not a fan of most of 'em but with minor reworking they look like they completely fit in Star Wars. The TIE avenger, the TIE defender and the Assault Gunboat are all examples of this.

Yup...
I do prefer this one, its different. The other is too much like the TIE Advanced with trimmed wings.
Mmmh, the TIE Advanced feels very "front end" when you see the design. There's almost nothing else forward of the cockpit, and it is not an angular design. It's just the smaller flying brick when compared to the TIE Bomber.
The Avenger feels like it should have a smaller body but larger wings, and scream fast movement and agility. You cut the heft suggested in the TIE Advanced and re-shape it into dagger points and sleekness. Plus the decipher Avenger uses the bulk for the larger missile racks.
I'm partial to the ball cockpit because I guess I like spheres and circles to counterpart angular bits- not ovals. I don't like the Enterprise-D as much as the Motion Picture ships I think for that reason.
Hopefully when FFG chooses to make this one a reality we can get the spherical cockpit versions. Guess it's up to LFL...

Doesn't Stretchy also looks like a spikewinged x1, just with a low poly cockpit?
Am I right in thinking this is from a TIE Fighter cutscene?
My First of three from Gosric's line up
That looks great. Makes my mini look better to have a good painter. I dont have the panel crosshatching but im still pretty happy with it. And m glad you are

Only problem I've had so far was the front panels on the wing were not strait (not that they would come that way it's in the printing) so I was warming them up with water and one broke off completely I was rather shocked
Saw this on Shapeways:
I like the orginal version like this more then the 1st ones Mel posted above. Is there a real difference between frosted and ultra frosted at this scale?
That's Mels, and it's a great design too
I'd say having had white strong and flexible, frosted and ultra frosted,
White is grainy kinda like sand paper in textture a fine one at that. It's good but get's the least detail
Frosted is a step up, it's the middle less grainy feel but more texture.
Ultra is the least grainy, it's almost smooth. It's got the most detail to it.
If you can afford it, ultra is the way to go, frosted if your wary, and WSF if you are on a budget.
Im sorry about the wing issue. Not sure how that happened but if it does so again id contact shapeways they are usually good with issues like that especially if you have a pic As for materials id say the same Though i would add that you would have to be on a seriously tight budget to chance WSF except on the really large ships where the fine detail work doesnt matter quite as much and strength is more important

The place where Frosted Ultra Detail and Frosted Detail diferenciate the most is in clean rounded surfaces. Frosted Detail has more tendency to have printing lines and they wouldnt be so clean.
I dont think you would notice too much the difference in this model.
I will post a picture (In white strong and flexible) of the variant model in a few weeks.
Seems like a no brainer for FFG to make one of these at this point, was probably a coin flip between the Avenger and Defender at the time for which they'd put out first. I might get one of the rounded ones to use as a named Advanced pilot for when the Raider comes if the Avenger isn't in the next wave.
I dont think FFG will make an Avenger. The Advanced is the Avenger for them. The Advanced has the Avenger pilots. The only way that they would have done an Avenger is if they did the miniature for the Raider. But considering they only do repaints (just like how the Royal Interceptor doesnt have the tiny wings or the prototype A-Wing still has the little cut in the fore (unlike what it should), they were not going to do a different miniature for the different Advanced in the Raider.
The Avenger is one of the last common-ish TIEs left in the EU people know because of the widespread play of the PC game. To me it's a cross between an Interceptor and an Advanced, basically an Interceptor with 2 shields and a missile(maybe 2 missiles). Can't have a system upgrade because then people would go back to skipping the Advanced after the "fix" with the Riader to use the Avenger. But it needs to cost more than the Interceptor because of the shields so it'll still have to fight for a spot, which is where the 1 or 2 missile can come in.
In short, FFG not producing an Avenger at some point makes no sense to me. Why cut a ship out of a shrinking pool especially since that one has a pedigree to stand on.
Or is this just your way to convince me to buy one from you?!?! How sneaky! =p

Well, you could... just... in case....

Ive been playing the heck out of TIE Fighter the past month, so my hopes are that FFG comes out with the Assault Gunboat or the Missile Boat from the game.
Or I could just give in and get either of them from Mel or Gosric on Shapeways.
I read an article that said there would never be a Gunboat or Missile boat, never ever ...OK that is a lie. But we both have nice ones if you get impatient *L*
