Journey Through the Swamp

By yodafan52977, in Star Wars: The Card Game - Rules Questions

I have a store championship next weekend and after a casual game last night, I ran into a problem. The tournament director, which I believe might be incorrect, will only accept an official ruling from ffg in order to change his mind on the ruling next weekend.

Journey to the Swamp, Light Side Jedi Objective - 130:

(1) Resource

5 health

Dagobah trait

Reaction: After this objective is revealed, search your deck for a CREATURE card with printed cost 3 or lower and put into play, if able. Shuffle your deck.

The event card Life Creates It, has the CREATURE trait.

Director says this card cannot be pulled with that objective. I, however, read this a few different ways.

I should be able to pull this event out with this objective, for multiple reasons:

1) It has the creature trait with cost 3 or lower

2) PUT INTO PLAY according to the core rule book goes from an out of play state into an in play state regardless of cost or restrictions

3) Even if events don't ever "hit the field" such as a unit or enhancement, the objectives phrase, "IF ABLE" allows me to still pull it, but not it into play then. I don't want to neccessarily use it immediately because if this is my starting objective, I'd love to keep it in my hand but not use it until later.

His rebuttal, and I quote:

1) Events cannot be PUT INTO PLAY because when they are played they can only be played from hand. They never "hit the field"

2) That would be broken.

Can I please get some clarification on this as I would love to use this LS deck next weekend.

Also, even though this was partly from another post, I have not gotten a for sure call on a related issue:

Let's say Journey Through the Swamp allows me to pull Life Creates It.

Then I decide after Luke Skywalker dies and his 3 enhancements go to the discard pile with him, that next turn I put in my second Luke and then play the event.

I don't read in any FFG literature that LIFE CREATES IT only allows me to grab Creature Units and CREATURE enhancements. Why not just print that. it says creature units and enhancements. If they mean for the trait to cover both nouns, then it needs to say that somewhere so I can properly use this card.

So if i play this event, lukes lightsaber and any other enhancement should be to come out of my discard and but into play.

Thanks for the help,

TO is correct on this one. It can indeed search for the event, attempt to put it into play which fails, and then reshuffle the deck which still contains the event because the effect never transfers it to your hand.

As for which Enhancements, the FAQ does specify that qualifiers apply to all following items in the list, so Creature Units and Enhancements does mean that the Enhancements have to be Creature Enhancements. To do what you want it to do. It would have to read "Enhancements and Creature units."

The real question is: what exactly is the phrase "if able" modifying?

A.) "...search your deck for a CREATURE card with printed cost 3 or lower and put into play"

or

B.) just the phrase "put into play"

...I would lean toward option B, especially considering that it comes in the same objective set. This would mean that you can trigger Journey Through the Swamp to pull Life Creates It, then keep Life Creates It in your hand, because you are not able to put it into play. It does not get discarded or shuffled back into your deck.

EDIT: Journey Through the Swamp does not say anything about putting the card into your hand, so upon further reflection, I believe that dbmeboy is correct on this one. You search for it, find it, and can't put it into play. So, it stays where it is, and the deck gets reshuffled with Life Creates It still in your deck.

Note that Yoda, You Seek Yoda works the same way for the same reason if Yoda is already in play. You search your deck, find him, fail to put him into play, and then shuffle him back into your deck.

The "if able" really can only be referring to putting into play. The only circumstance in which you could not search your deck is when the deck was empty, and in that case you wouldn't be able to play the card because no part of its effect could resolve.
