Opinion on build

By lo742, in X-Wing Squad Lists

100pts - going against someone who rolls really good. I do not roll good so need help :)

This is based on cards I have, I do not have all the cards/ships.

I am thinking of going Defenders since they have good Hull/Shield or Phantoms for the extra damage

First build

Rexler Brath (37)
Marksmanship (3) Can you use Rexler's ability after you use Marksmanship? I figured they go good together, also does it only count vs Hull damage?

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Shield Upgrade (4)

Royal Guard Pilot (interceptor) (22)
Targeting Computer (2)

Or go with Phantoms

Phantom attack (100pts)
"Whisper" (32)
Veteran Instincts (1)
Fire-Control System (2)
Gunner (5)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
Swarm (2) - use swarm on Echo to boost his ability
total: 46

"Echo" (30)
Predator (3)
Gunner (5)
Advanced Cloaking Device (4)
total: 39

Academy pilot (12)
Tie Fighter

Thanks for any ideas

Marksmanship does not allow Brath to use his ability. It does not provide a focus token (which is what brath needs to spend to get his ability to work). Predator is a good alternative since it always works and is not dependent on your action.

To answer your question about marksmanship: it turns one 'eye' symbol into a 'critical' and any other 'eye' symbols into 'hits'. If your opponent has any shields, he can use them to cancel one hit/critical per token, but must cancel hits first. If shield tokens are gone/not available, then each 'hit' remaining requires your opponent to place a face down damage card on the ship. Each 'critical' requires the opponent to place a face up damage card on the ship. If total number of damage cards = hull value, the ship is destroyed (some critical damage cards can cause more damage, and 'direct hit' counts as two damage).

A Royal Guard Interceptor is better with Push the Limit or Veteran Instincts. If all you have is a targeting computer and you use your action to target lock, your interceptor will die easily to most return fire (especially if as you say, your opponent rolls well!)

Whisper cannot equip both Veteran Instincts & Swarm Tactics. Only 1 Elite Pilot Talent allowed per ship (unless you have a special rule that says otherwise, like the a-wing's Test Pilot title card).

Otherwise I would say your Whisper loadout is very good. Use Evade if anyone has a shot on you and let FCS + Gunner get your kills.

If you have a second veteran instincts, you should drop predator off of Echo for it and throw on another FCS for him.

Flying two phantoms takes a lot of practice (especially Echo!) because they are glass cannons and mistakes can really cost you (they usually don't survive if they bump, for example).

Hope that helps!

That helps a lot, thanks. I am thinking of going Defender route as I will survive longer. I made adjustments.

How is this:

Rexler Brath (37)
Predator (3)

Onyx Squadron Pilot (32)
Shield Upgrade (4)

Royal Guard Pilot (interceptor) (22)
Veteran Instincts (1)

total 99pts

Alternate

Go with 3 Defenders and no upgrades

Rexler Brath (37)
Onxy Squadron Pilot (32)
Delta Squadron Pilot (30)
Total 99

Alternate

Go with 3 Defenders and no upgrades

Rexler Brath (37)

Onxy Squadron Pilot (32)

Delta Squadron Pilot (30)

Total 99

I think Brath w/ predator and 2 deltas would be better. Having PS 1 & PS 3 makes things harder to fly. With 2 deltas, they have the same pilot skill so you can keep them together and move them in any order you like. Then have Brath either behind them or flanking depending on your playstyle and opponent. I think that would be a pretty good list if you like defenders ;)

Thanks, good idea. I like the idea of using predator and going with 2 Delta's. We shall see how it goes this weekend.

:)

It looks to me like you have a Defender and the Imperial Aces Box at least. Here is something to consider:

Brath + Predator

Royal Guard + PtL + Hull + Targeting Computer (x2) [optionally VI + Hull + Shield for three PS 8 ships]

I will say that instead of naked, unnamed Defender for 30 or 32 points I'd rather go for a Royal Guard Pilot loaded with Hull and Shield upgrades at 29 points. The Interceptor loses a 'hit point' and the white k-turn but is cheaper, has a better dial outside of that k-turn, has a native BOOST ability and also has PS 6 instead of the 1 or 3 from the cheap defenders.

If you're just going back and forth then the Defender has it's merits. If you need to from side to side then the Interceptor is likely superior. When we start looking at these comparisons it will really come down to playstyles.

The comparison between the Onyx and a RGP + PtL + SU + HU may be the most direct. The Defender has TL and white k-turn but the Royal has PS, the ability to double up on actions, and a much easier time shedding stress.
