Confirmation about LOS shift required

By Nagash1959, in BattleLore

So, just played a great game having worked out the few rules questions that we weren't sure about or blatantly misread the first time. Right near the end we did have something come up that I wanted to double check though.

He had an archer unit right on the edge of the battlefield, shooting at one of my units also on the edge of the battlefield. The only full hex would have blocked LOS if it was shifted through it, but through the half-hex it was clear. We wondered if you could shift the LOS through the half hexes as nothing can move through them.

I quickly double checked the LOS rules and it seems like it IS ok to do that, as only movement is addressed for the half hexes and the shifting rules only address blocking units. Was that the correct call to make?

Rules reference instructs to shift the LoS from the edge in one direction, but never says it must stay "withing hexes eligible for movement". Additionally, it reads that:

Line of sight line is not blocked unless there is either a hex of blocking terrain or a hex containing units along this new line.

And clearly this is not the case, so that yes, I'd say it's a legit move. Rather unusual, tho. Would you mind pointing me at the scenario where this happened?

I can see it happening if the archer is against the edge, the target is against the edge 2 spaces away, and the interveneing "non-half" hex is blocked with terrain or another unit. Not very common, as you usually don't sit up against the edge like that, but feasible.

@ Julia: Barrow Mounds of the Gatesmen vrs Howling Giant Hills. I had a unit of Riverwatch Riders on the hill to the far right. He had a unit of Blood Harvesters on the hill to the far left, with his archers on the hill bottom left of that. Because the rules for that scenario let him see through one hex of blocking terrain he could ignore the hill, but not the blood harvesters so that LOS route was blocked. The half-hex was clear and using the same justification that you gave before, I told him to take the shot.

That positioning isn't going to come up very often, as both units do have to be at the far edge. In truth it was also of little overall value to the games outcome as he wiped me clear off the map (No joke, some of the luckiest rolling on his part imaginable countered by me never hitting. I was wiped off the map entirely and he lost a single unit total. It was a laugh riot)

Nagash,

thanks for the scenario reference :) Allow me to add a line of clarification: the Blood Harvesters unit on the hill does not block the LoS of your archers, because when you're on a hill, you can ignore units while tracing LoS (ref rule, pag 5, under "Hills", second bullet point: Units occupying hill hexes ignore all units when tracing line of sight . However, blocking terrain still blocks line of sight for units occupying hill hexes )

In the specific case of your scenario, then, it's a perfectly legit shot: the Blood Harvesters are ignore because you're on a hill (core game rules) and you ignore the hill because of the Scenario rules. Hence, there's nothing blocking the LoS.

(but in any case, even if your archers had been on a plain hex, the attack was legit because you can shift the LoS and find the target hex)
