Ten Numb vs Evade Token

By Tvboy, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was under the impression that players can use evade tokens to cancel Ten Numb's crits, since they're not dice, but after searching the FAQ for more information, I found this recent update on Autoblaster, which is worded identically to Ten Numb.

The defender cannot cancel [hit] results with evade tokens or other added [evade] results, such as from C-3PO, when attacked with Autoblaster (see “Dice Results” on page 8).

And this this update on Dice Results:

Dice Results Results that are added are treated as dice results that can only be canceled (they cannot be modified or rerolled). For example, when attacking with “Autoblaster” a [evade] result added by an evade token cannot cancel a [hit] result.

So does this mean that evade tokens, C-3P0 and Autothrusters cannot cancel Ten Numb's crit rolls, and is this a change to how the rules were being played before? Thanks.

Oh crap, just noticed somebody else already posted this same question on the front page. Nevermind.

Basically, it got changed in the last FAQ.

Yeah, this wasn't just clarified in the most recent FAQ; it was actually reversed.

I actually think the cancelling with evade dice was always intended to be the way the newest FAQ suggests. We just all thought that an evade token was something different that dice results, but if you look at page 12 from the core rule book:

If the defender has an evade token, he may return it to the action token supply to add one additional result to his defense roll (see “Combat Phase Example” on pages 14–15).

The evade token was always adding an evade result to you defense dice, so it should always have been considered part of defense dice. I think they just clarified the ruling because everyone was doing it incorrectly.

Shrug

Older versions of the FAQ had given exactly the opposite ruling to the current one. But yes, I agree that the current ruling makes more sense.

I think the FAQ ruling reversal has served to streamline things a little by removing an exception. The release of the Autoblaster turret is now covered by the same ruling and would therefore need no FAQ entry specifically for it.

I've seen a few game systems where the writers have made a "hard and fast" rule, but then there's an exception for a particular unit, and then later there's another few units that get the exception, and then a few more, until the "hard and fast" rule becomes the exception to the norm.
