How to visit the City Gate?

By WilmerT, in Talisman Home Brews

I wonder how most of you are choosing to interpret the instructions for City expansion entrance space, City gate.

I have viewed the opportunity to either turn in existing trophies for gold, or bring a poster with for a gold piece each as a much wanted addition to the sparse occasions of adventure card gold-bags.

However, the chance of exactly land on the city gate to "visit" and make use of the wanted posters, is really slim - not to say useless.

Therefore the idea of interpreting the term of "visiting" the City gate in a more loose definition has come to mind:

Whenever you travel through, and not only limited to stopping at the gate, you effectively "visit" the space - and hence may address any suitable wanted poster on the way in or out of the city.

This makes it a really useful feature, the way I believe it to be intended.

What say you? :)

At least in an everyday sense of the word "visiting" you certainly may take your time to go through the wanted posters even if you intend to travel a wee bit further in to town... :)

I may be playing this wrong, but you can turn in trophies anywhere once you have a Wanted Poster, but yeah you have to land there to buy one, however I also believe if you land there you can fulfill a wanted poster for free if you have the trophy at the time.

We tend to have several people each game land on the space. It usually isn't a problem and is essentially the game mechanic of Talisman, game wide.

I'd say that if you feel the "Wanted" mechanism is under-used in the game, houserule it so that it gets more love, as long as everyone else is onboard. In our group, no one has bothered with bounties since the first time we added the City, but that has not been a result of the difficulty in landing on the City Gate.

I interpret the City Gates as follows: you land on the space via an exact roll, you deal with any other cards (except Wanted Posters) and then you either buy Wanted Posters for 1G or claim a bounty. If Wanted Posters end up on the City Gates for other reasons, such as a character ditching one, it becomes part of the pool of Wanted Posters already there.

And I agree with you: it's true that Wanted Posters aren't used as much as they could be, at least in our group. One advantage of the posters that ask for Enemy bounties is that you can either kill the Enemies first and then land on the City Gates to claim the bounty, or you can buy the posters at the City Gates and claim the bounty in the field. Either way, though, you have to land exactly on the City Gates. It would be nice if you could buy posters as you "go through" the gates, as you suggested.
