Could some one help me? I am trying to learn.

By bmwrider, in X-Wing

I want to use lists with good synergy and learn to build through using lists that work well already so I understand the combos and how they work by playing them.

Is there a good way to find lists for specific ships.

I have not been playing long so finding good builds for my ships would help a lot but with google or the forum search, I think I am using poor search terms.

Edit: I am adding this to my OP

My friend Jeremy and I have of building 2 lists each (one for each faction) and sticking with them for a while so we can learn.

After reading the replies here I think the best thing we could do is try 2-3 ship squads to make learning to fly a little easier, I have one for my rebels (Dash, Kyle and a prototype A wing)

I would like to build a VT 49 & Firespray list but I am not sure it would be a good idea.

There are many proven lists:

Han Shoots First

Tie Swarm

YT-2400+E-Wing

Fat Han/Chewie

Super Dash+escorts

Firespray+mini-swarm

Triple Bounty hunter

That's just a few off the top of my head. Check out the sticky at the top of the forum for los of helpful links.

Hmmm....that's a tough one. You can look through the Lists section, but it's pretty new. That means some of the older ones aren't discussed.

BGG (Board Game Geeks) has a forum you can search, too.

It might help with a couple of things:

1) Who are you playing with?

This means is it just you and some other new friends? Or are you going to stores and playing regulars? If it's the first, you can really play through and learn the different ships. For example, you can really play with just X-wings vs. Tie Fighters to learn the basics. I think both those ships are good, but quickly dismissed by regular players these days. If you play with regulars, then you will need to up the game a bit and get used to Phantoms and large, turreted ships. It's almost a totally different game.

2) Any specific ships you are looking to learn about?

For example I just picked up my first E-wing and want to use it.

I got a Decimator and know my builds sucked half way through the game, when I use a proven build I catch on fast, like the Dash and Kyle + 3rd ship build, it was so easy for me to play this list well, that is if you look past how often I crash and loose actions while I am learning.

I haven't been to this website in a while, but it it used to help me:

The whole website seem nice

A lot of list here, thanks.

Anyone reading this and trying to learn as I am should check the site suggested above out for sure.

I added the link to make it easy

So using these names in a search will bring them up easy?

Do or do not there is no learn.

First welcome to the game, don't worry about crashing we all did that at first and even the best of us can still clip an asteroid every now and again, practice makes perfect.

As for lists I'm not that up on rebel lists but others will help there, what will help is a list of ships you have so we don't give you builds you can't make.

One thing I could recommend would be to listen to X-wing podcasts. They are free and you learn a lot. Each one is different and not one knows everything. Ones that I listen to are:

  • NOVA Squadron Radio
  • Scum and Villainy Podcast
  • The Jodo Cast
  • Podcast in a Game of Chance
  • The Kessel Run

The latest Kessel Run is dedicated to just the Decimator. It's a good episode and they talk about all the different strategies and builds with the different guys. There is also a gem of info by taking Vader crew with a Gunner crew. So, you can fire at someone....miss, and then do Vader. OK. Fire again, and Vader again! Take that, Phantom.

Part of the problem of what you might see when you look at things is how what's come out as popular now and trying to figure it all out. Each ship came out and changed the meta a little bit. Right now, EVERYONE is taking big, turreted ships. So, there are some ships that (at the moment) aren't doing well against big, turreted ships. The biggest one is the Tie Interceptor. When this ship came out, Imperial players almost always seemed to have one of these in their lists. Soontir Fel is amazing and everyone's favorite. What he does is dodge firing arcs (arc dodger). That's useless against big, turreted ships. So, you see it a lot less. What is coming out, though, in Scum and Villainy is Auto Thrusters. So, they will come back and be effective.

I happen to love Y-wings. When the game first came out, they didn't last long as the Imperials only had Tie Fighters and Tie Advanced. That means you faced a lot of little shots. So, it died quickly. As the game moved on, it became much better as there are fewer ships. Basically, I think the Y-wing flies into the middle of things and blasts at people with Ion Tokens. In my opinion, the point of the Ion Turret is to either set up a shot or take someone out for a turn. If you Ionize someone, you know where they are going to be. If you can then set up the shots, you should be able to take them out with little problem. Just set it up so that your ships are within Range 1 and out of their firing arc. The other option is to just take someone out of the fight for a turn while you chase down someone else.

When it comes to Y-wings, my favorite is Dutch with R7-T1. For an action, you get a TL (Target Lock) and then hand one out to someone else. Not only that, but you get a boost action, which is great as Y-wings tend to be hard to turn around.

For the Defender, I prefer Col. Vessery as I think his ability is great. I usually just give him VI. The rest of the list, though needs to have some ability to TL. I find a Omnicron Shuttle with Weapons Eng. is fantastic. The rest of the points are good on almost anything.

E-wings are something I've not flown much. Corran Horn is most people's favorite. People usually give him R2-D2 to keep him alive. He gets to double fire and then do some maneuvers to regain his shields. I also see him a lot with Fat Han, but that list makes me yawn.

Alright, I've seen about 5 updates since I started typing. I'll hit POST.

Do or do not there is no learn.

This. Just jump in and play them. Fail horribly, learn from it, and go again.

He does have his list in his signature. :)

So he does, must have glossed over that :)

For Interceptors, always use Push The Limit, and keep in mind the not being shot at is a high priority than firing on another ship. It's strength is arc dodging. Try only using 1 as a flanker while your main squad approaches from a different direction.

Unless your using autothrusters a card due to land with wave six in the starviper expansion you'll find turret ships hammer interceptors hard.

Against small fighters you focus on using barrel roll and boost to take you out of arcs, and if that's not possible turtle up go for focus and evade to max your chances.

That might change with Autothrusters on Kir Kanos.

That should help me with using interceptors, thanks

I'm also really new to the game.

I feel like I have a better handle on how synergies work than my own experience allows though for one simple reason. YouTube. There are loads of videos of great matches with great players running their lists.

Instead of reading how a list interacts within itself and agaisnt other lists, you can watch and see how good piloting makes the list work.

Putting this into practice well will take me a little longer but it was a good boost to my initial understanding. :)

There are indeed loads of good vids on YouTube, everything from two guys in a shed to world championships.

A good idea is to play a list several times to get a feel for it. It's very easy to lose with an unfamiliar list, even one that's "supposed" to win, the first couple times through.

I agree, in fact I think a players ability to fly a ship to the location they intended, or without a collision on the way is perhaps more important than the build, I would bet a player that can visualize their maneuvers correctly and line them selves up for good shots, good defence and good use of cards/abilities, can win against using a poor build against a poor pilot with a good build.

My friend keeps thinking I'm going to fly off the board even though I never have, he gets this look of malevolent glee at the prospect and I greatly enjoy disappointing him.

Dice rolling is irelevant next to the power of good flying.

I would like to be half that good at flying some day
