Store Championship Storage Options

By SciFiGuy84, in X-Wing

I've got a relatively large collection and last tourney I went to hauling around everything in my Red Plano was a pain and always fearing that my case would hit the floor and scatter a couple hundred pieces everywhere. So I'm looking for a single small Plano case to hold only what I need to play that day. My current plan is to run a YT-1400 with a few small ships so I need something that accomodates the large ship along with all the pieces.

That's awesome Muon.

OP I'd say you don't need anything fancy, like literally a cardboard box would be fine. When I only mean to take a few ships and specific upgrades I just throw them all together in a small box padded with foam grip shelf liner. More than good enough for plastic miniatures with sturdy paintjobs.

You can buy single Plano trays. Just get one that has a large, open area in the front. You can put your templates, dice, asteroids, cards, dials, and ships all in one tray. You can buy a single tray at Wal-mart or any Sports store. You can carry it in a backpack or just in your hands.

I use one for my templates and one for my big ships, but you can easily combine them. Here's the pic of the two.

Check out what I did to transport only a fraction of my collection to store games of all kinds:

Wow those are really cool! I like how the bases slide into those slots and keep them from wiggling around. Looks like a bit of construction and I'm just not super down with that.

I've looked at the Plano 3700 series clear boxes, probably going to run out to one of the local Wally Marts and see what I can find. Wife was nice enough to give me permission to buy yet another thing for my gaming hobby. She won't let me get a new storage case for my Grey Knights so I'm using egg cartons, so I'm grateful she's letting me buy a tourney case for X-Wing.

You could also try using a lunch tray. It'll fit everything you need and its easy to carry around and store. We used this at our old LGS for Warmachine tournaments, it made things so easy to move around between rounds.

I don't know all the different names for the Plano trays, but I find them to be all different. I like some for some things and others for others. There are some that have hard plastic rows throughout it all. Those won't be good for big ships as there is no room. You need to find some that have the open space. They usually give you little plastic pieces to create your own sections. If Wally World doesn't have it, try a Sports store in the fishing section. When I was looking for a case, I did some creative shuffling to make sure I got the trays that I wanted when I bought my Plano box. ;)

For the longest time, I just had 2 trays and used an old laptop bag to carry them around in. Eventually, the collection crew and I unloaded my WHFB Empire troops to collect dust elsewhere and use my Plano 1374.

EDIT: Oh.....and there are "tuck boxes" on the BGG site. Someone created a PDF that you can either print on card stock or glue on cardboard (like from a legal folder or a cereal box). They hold the ship and keep it from being bounced around.

I'm working to have a friend make me a wooden tray specifically for X-wing.

I got one of the half sized boxes from KR multicase. Room for tokens, cards, templates and a half tray for whatever else you use.

I'm using a Star Wars lunch pail that my wife found at old navy for $2. Fits everything except the range ruler which I use for personal defense anyways.

Plano 3750 it should cost u about $5 at Walmart is perfect it has fitted ever tourney list I've had and slips into my small camelbak, I pack lunch, snacks and 3L of water, so I got everything I need for a full day and easy to pack away and small enough to everything everywhere

I use a desk organizer tray from wlamart ($3) for tournaments. It's got six bins for tokens and then a long one for templates and two medium sized ones that work for dice and asteroids. Also the bins are big enough to put ship bases in upright so you can leave them assembled between matches. Only problem is no lid. To address that, I too am working on a wooden tournament box solution which will essentially be a wooden version of this tray with a lid that has inlays for the templates/rr/dd/dice for organization during games.

Think I'm gonna go with the Plano 3750. I'll throw some space pattern duct tape on it and maybe a few stickers and call it a day!

I second/third/fourth(?) this suggestion. I bough one of these early and have used it for every event. It has more than enough space for what you will need for an even and the extra wide bottom fits even a falcon.

I fifth this!

I have a bit of a woodworking hobby, so I made this. http://imgur.com/a/bl0xk

You could make something similar with cardboard or foam core.

I actually combo the above methods -- I take my stuff (the ships I'm using and all of my tokens, rulers, etc) in a Plano 5231. Unpack it all one time into a Walmart desk drawer organizer, similar to this one. This is then easy to take from table to table, and if there's room, I can even pretty much play out of it (tokens & dice & whatnot). Mine has a compartment that fits my sleeved damage deck pretty well, no worries about knocking it over. Afterwards, I repack everything back into the Plano.

The shoulder bag I use holds the Plano inside, & the drawer organizer clips to the outside underneath the flap & is held in place. Perfect!

I use a "Really useful boxes 1.5L"

It holds a whole fleet plus whatever I need for 100 points. It just doesn't hold big ships, those I have to carry in my hoodie pocket. I also made a 2-compartment foam insert to hold ships a little safer. I have a very small plano with enough tokens for what I need as well.

I rarely fly more than 6 small ships, or more than 1 large ship. So it works pretty dang good.

Well I went and picked up my Plano 3750 today. I got the last one on the shelf, but I had to rummage around a bit. Now to build my list which will hopefully get me into at least top 4.
