Is it here yet?!

By EmpireErik, in Star Wars: Armada

I have been avoiding this section of the forum, so as not to get burnt out on a game that has not arrived yet. But like a kid in a car on a trip, ARE WE THERE YET?!, lol.

Once in a while I skim through the posts and read the discussions and my interest gets sparked again. I am looking forward to the game's release. However, between X-wing, DnD Attack Wing and now Armada, I think I may be getting close to the breaking point. That's a lot of games for a 7 day week (plus I run a DnD game).

I assume a lot of others are in the same boat. How is your club going to handle it? I was thinking of a set day of the week to play and every other week changing games (x-wing, then Armada).

I started looking at the Facebook Groups, and if I had the skill I would create one for the Long Island, NY - NYC area. A lot of your Armanda Facebook sites are well done, congrats!

Like many others...is it here yet?!

patience

those victories were not built for speed

local group has little interest in dnd attack wing and there is only maybe 4 people playing it and star trek attack wing. We have a strong showing for xwing and hopefully many of them will pick up a bit of armada.

My local group has zero attack wing players (of either variety). We do have a ton of other games on the go though...Jugula, Saga, Infinity, Malifaux and Flames of War mostly.

However, our FLGS has room for a good 6-10 games, so people either arrange in advance or just bring whatever they fancy and get a game there. Armada will likely just join the pool!

My advice: dump D&D (and Attack Wing). :P

But, I'm clearly biased. (Also, I also play in a D&D game now, so who am I to talk?)

Its looking like Sundays at our FLGS are going to be "Star Wars Miniature game" days- where we'll have Armada and X-Wing side by side. We'll see how it turns out.

We have trouble keeping anything other than the Decimator, Outrider, and the huge ships in stock at my FLGS. We are also buried in Attack Wing expansions (for both) for the one or two customers we have who come in and buy it.

Yeah, the FLGSs that I frequent have the same keeping-in-stock problems. I wonder what's going on. Are the 'printers' just not able to push enough product? Is China having a plastic shortage? Or is the demand just way beyond what FFG estimated it would be?

Also, on the Attack Wing side - does WizKids have a more robust manufacturer, or is it just less popular?

Also, on the Attack Wing side - does WizKids have a more robust manufacturer, or is it just less popular?

Two elements here - one is that Attack Wing was specifically designed to use the existing crappy Hero-Clix miniatures that WizKids had already, and the other is that the game is terrible. I looked at both Attack Wing and X-Wing and chose X-Wing (though I bought both, selected ships from AW only to make my own trek game though), whereas I have bought every darn X-Wing expansion out. Scum and Villany will be the first X-Wing expansion I have decided not to buy into, and that is because of Armada coming out.

Now a Star Trek version of Armada - I would buy that in a heartbeat ;)

I think right now FFG just isn't ordering enough X-Wing parts (which makes sense since they probably have 1 supplier who has limited room for making the entire line up of FF games. All those board games take up room too, so there is limited space and Armada gets precedence right now since they want to release it soon.) Hopefully within a few months they will have cleared up enough of the initial demand for Armada and Wave 6 that they can produce and sell more standard X-wing models (Slave I and Millennium Falcon, I'm looking at you!)

The problem is the game is so popular right now that they don't have enough production lines and enough molds to keep up with demand. It's probably not fiscally viable to make that many more molds when they cost $10,000 or more.

Shorting demand can be a pretty brilliant marketing strategy: If the product is good, a shortfall in product can keep demand high.

If I may be so bold: as gamers, we tend to have a bad case of "ooh! shiney!" (aka: gimme the new hotness!)

Shorting supply in a miniature game is a quick way to kill it. Gamers are fickle and will just move on. If it got out that FFG was purposly shorting stock people would lose their **** and just quit.

One of the reasons I quite FOW, they where great in coming out with awesome books full of good stuff new mini's that you would just die to get your hands on then you wait and 4 months later your still waiting for those new minis to come out oh their on the front page saying their for sale and you ordered them 2 months ago and your still waiting. Then they send your FLGS a flyer that says "Hey we don't have any of the new stuff for the last 3 or 4 supplements we put out. but we have a discount on all the old stuff we're over stocked with because no one wants just a fyi" and with every new book it just gets worst.

Thank god FFG doesnt seem to be headed down that same road.

I shouldn't have to go to a 3rd party to get my minis

My impression is that FFG prints a great deal with each of their games and we gamers tend to get it all from FLGS or off the mini web stores. Just an FYI if there is something you really want Barnes and Noble is the way to go. You might not find it in the local store but they still have it warehoused and you can order it.

As for the Attack Wing bit, I think one issue is that WizKids uses a lower quality production method. My guess is that WizKids as part of the almighty Hasbro probably has a locked in pricing contract formula with some big factory in China. They can get stuff printed quickly and in vast quantities, but it will always be of similar to same quality as the cheap plastic you find in a lot of Hasbro games.

FFG on the other hand has always tried to make their products stand out with higher quality parts (cardboard bits always heavier to stand up to use, the cards are never too thin, and the plastic is always high quality). One thing that causes is FFG can't get quick reprints. They usually don't need to reprint often for most of their games, but when they do it is likely they have to make a minimum order that is quite expensive and it has to be ordered a few months before it will actually print. So take a look right now and you will see they are reprinting some of the earlier waves of X-Wing because they finally have a large enough shortage of the models to warrant the reprint. I'm happy that FFG has been this successful and I hope they sink a great deal of the profits into development of more games as we gamers are fickle and we are always looking for a new shiney to add to our collection.

I love how my game shop, much like every other game shop I'm sure, puts their X-Wing and Attack wing materials on the same aisles, and the few remaining pieces of X-Wing pieces just stand out from the star trek stuff. It makes me sad, because I love the Star Trek and Star Wars universes equally.

FFG isn't the fastest on reprinting stuff, but I'd expect as much from the quality. That being said, I'm not having an atrocious time finding stuff to get my fledgling X-Wing squadron off the ground.

I think, since FFG doesn't have Hasbro money backing them, the margins are so fine that they can't really afford to print a bunch of stuff at such a high production cost, to have stock just sitting on the shelf unsold.

Either way, I need my Star Destroyers now!

Let's hope that with Asmodee money they'll have a bit more weight, but it won't be like Hasbro.

By the way, are you sure WizKids has the backing of Hasbro. My deep research on Wikipedia (2 minutes, tops) says they belong to NECA .

I think I confused them with Wizards of the Coast which is owned by Hasbro, my bad!

Since it's your first offense, you are sentenced to fifty lashes with a wet noodle, but if I see you do something similar in the future, I'm going to upgrade the penalty to using a dry noodle.

We here on the Armada side of the FFG Mini house do not tolerate such insubordination! Pre-pare to be frozen in Carbonate until armada wave 4 is released!

Noooooooooooooooooo!

I was on board at GenCon, but I figured it would be out by November. If I knew it was 7-8 months away at that point I would have been p*ssed. Why would FFG reveal a game ALMOST A YEAR away. That's like a Star Wars trailer a full year before the movie's release! I think I also answered my own rant.
